Tuesday Morning Quarterback

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

Anyone who was surprised the Ravens lost at Buffalo hasn’t seen the team play this year…Remember in the preseason when Dick Jauron was talking about a running back by committee?…For whatever reason, Lee Evans has been much more productive throughout his career (a three year sample) during the second half of seasons. Take a look at the secondaries he’s faced so far – he’s a good buy-low target.

Despite not being 100 percent, Kevin Jones currently looks like a top-10 fantasy back…How about the Lions throwing just 20 times Sunday? What smash-mouth football they are playing in Detroit…Calvin Johnson has scored a TD once every five touches this season…Earnest Graham might have had the most surprising/impressive game Sunday, displaying some nice open field runs to go along with hauling in 13 catches. He’s by far the more valuable back than Michael Bennett.

Jeff Fisher won’t do it, but Chris Henry looks like the best Titans’ running back – at least when the ball is in his hands (he still needs to learn the game’s nuances)…Not sure Ahman Green is even worth a roster spot at this point…Roydell Williams is a sneaky play right now, currently acting as the team’s No. 1 WR. However, this week he faces Nnamdi Asomugha, making him a must-sit…It’s Sage Rosenfels’ world, the rest of us are just paying rent.

I always preach waiting on the QB position in fantasy football, but even I admit Tom Brady is worth a first round pick right now…I’m not sure why the Patriots ever bother running the ball…I’m also not sure I’m ready to live in a world where Wes Welker is a top-10 fantasy WR, but it’s looking like I have no choice…Tough break for Ronnie Brown owners, as there was a pretty good argument that he was the No. 1 fantasy player this season. That said, Jesse Chatman has looked great in relief, and he has top-10 upside as his replacement.

Death. Taxes. Vernon Davis making a back-breaking drop…I keep wanting to write off Amani Toomer, yet he still remains relevant…If Brandon Jacobs can remain healthy – admittedly, a big if – he is going to have serious value over the rest of the season. The Giants’ offense is on a roll, and Tom Coughlin continuously gets his scheme to produce terrific running results. Reuben Droughns struggled in short-yardage situations last week, and Derrick Ward is getting phased out little by little. I treat Jacobs like a top-15 player right now.

According to Fox’s “K-Zone” – or whatever their variation is called – there is no such thing as a called strike.

Bobby Petrino needs to be fired. It’s bad enough wasting carries on Warrick Done, but he also made the worst decision so far in the 2007 NFL season Sunday; with the Falcons down 22-16 at mid-field and 1:58 left, he elected to punt on 4th and 13. A first down by the opposition means the game’s over either way, so field position is essentially irrelevant. Pathetic, way to show faith in your team. Almost as bad as the Indians’ third base coach giving Kenny Lofton the stop sign. Always better playing to win rather than not to lose…That wasn’t the only bone-headed coaching decision in the game, however, as Sean Payton had his own momentary lapse in judgment as well; with the score 20-16 and five minutes left, he elected to go for a 2-point conversion. I’m still trying to figure out what was to gain here – I know what the downside was (23-20). This type of math does not require a rocket scientist.

Clinton Portis is not the runner he once was…Santana Moss’ career has officially hit rock-bottom…Tim Rattay went 1-for-1 for 1 yard and 1 TD Sunday…This Redskins defense is better than most give them credit for.

If there were ever an example of how football is so much more than the skill position players, the Bengals are it…Ocho Quatro – T.J. Houshmandzadeh should probably be considered the second best fantasy WR right now…If Marvin Lewis goes back to feeding Rudi Johnson all the carries over Kenny Watson once he returns, I give up.

More evidence that coaches just don’t understand when (not) to go for the 2-point conversion: Kansas City going for 2 with 11:30 left in a 12-7 game. again, it doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out this isn’t a smart idea…Jared Allen has six sacks over the last three weeks and eight sacks in five games this season. This Chiefs defense is very good.

Adrian Peterson is the best back in the NFL right now…And Marion Barber isn’t too far behind…How high would Jason Witten go if a fantasy draft were held today? Third round?…I’m beginning to think Tarvaris Jackson might not be the answer at the quarterback position in Minnesota.

The Eagles and Bears looked exactly like what they are Sunday – two last place teams…OK, Chicago is .5 games ahead of Minny, but the point is, these teams have been huge disappointments and will continue to be so over the course of the season…I’d place the odds of Donovan McNabb returning to Philadelphia next season at 20 percent…I’m not exactly sure what you could get in a trade for Cedric Benson right now, but if you can make it a case of your favorite beer, I’m on board.

Words can’t describe how bad this Rams team looks. Forget all this Dolphins talk, St. Louis has by far a better chance of finishing winless, despite playing in the easier conference…I pegged Shaun Alexander as a bust entering the season, but I didn’t expect this big of a train-wreck. I probably wouldn’t even pick the guy up if he was dropped in my league. Two years removed from winning the MVP, Alexander currently looks like the NFL’s worst running back.

Someone get this man some Claritin – Willie Parker has officially become allergic to the end zone…As a fellow Travis Henry owner, I can’t wait to see what Selvin Young can do…Brandon Marshall should be viewed as a top-20 WR right now.

If I’m a Joseph Addai owner, I’m scared to death of Kenton Keith’s emergence. That running back situation looks like a full-blown timeshare…The Colts are the most underrated team in the NFL. Yes, you heard that right.

    Blasphemy!
As a Travis owner, I hope that he has great lawyers. I don’t have selvin.

    Interesting stuff D3.

I traded LenDale the whale for Kevin Jones earlier…it’d be looking pretty darn sweet, if I hadn’t used Wes Welker to sweeten the deal. Of course, I have Calvin Johnson (did he look like a man among boys on that end-around or what? It looked like he just decided he was going to score, and was just figuring out how exactly to do it) and Roddy White fighting over my WR3 spot, so I’m not hurting too bad.

I dropped Graham he looked so bad last week…13 catches!?!?

On the TB subject, they must be a pretty sweet D matchup next week, right? And would you start Garcia over VY or Clemens this week? (Romo bye…and Witten too, damnit).

Kenny Watson, don’t let Rudi take over…please!

The K-zone thing was pissing me off. As an avid hater of the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels, I’ve been a big Tribe fan for the last couple weeks. It looked to me like they got jobbed on a lot of first-pitch strikes that were never called (Especially with Westbrook, which led to a lot of 3-1 pitches getting drilled), and FOX only ever seemed to replay either the meaningless ones, or the potential strike-threes, forgetting how important the first two can be.

As bad as St. Louis has looked, I need S-Jax to come back and do something. For the consensus #2 pick, all he’s done is cause headaches and waste roster spots so far…he’s still my vote for bust of the year so far.

Now that Romo is back to earth, Brady does look like an early first-round pick…yuck.

I’ve got Addai in one league…he still looks a lot better than Keith (though Keith looks good, in all fairness). I still think they were being careful with Addai, and I think it’s better for his explosiveness and health if he’s only getting 75% of the touches, as long as Keith doesn’t specifically take all the goal line carries.

Donald Trump – haha. I hear ya. Don’t worry, he has the best legal team money can buy.

I still like that deal for you – White/Welker for K. Jones…The Calvin Johnson end-around was exactly like you described it, so non-chalant, just toying with the defense…Great matchup for TB D next week, Quinn Gray looked baaad. I’d probably play VY or Clemens (if they start) over Garcia – tough matchup and Jax shouldn’t score much on the flip side. S-Jax for bust of the year- I’ll buy it.

I agree with Keith’s assessment regarding Addai, and while I’d say no way to that deal for this year, it’s interesting b/c of the keeper aspect. Indy’s offense should obviously be vastly superior to Buffalo’s for the foreseeable future, but Lynch looks like the real deal and the type of back who gets 85 percent of the touches (none get more than that typically). And Edwards/Evans might make it a very respectable unit soon enough. It’s a close call I’d say. If you think you can win it this year, then I’d probably roll with Addai, if not, then go ahead and trade for Lynch. In fact, could you get him to throw in something as well? Addai may have more perceived value right now, so ask for a WR back too.

Triple-D, got a couple of trade deals I would love your input on, if you have a minute.

My QBs are Big Ben and Campbell
Starting RBs are Tomlinson and AD, with Jacobs, the two Carolina “De” boys and Kenny Watson backing them
Starting WRs are Steve Smith and Boldin, backed by Crayton, Mason and, for the moment, Reggie Brown
TEs: Vernon Davis and Ben Watson

    D/ST, K–whatever, not relevant here.

We have an “OP” slot in which one can run any offensive player. Jacobs is locked in there for me at the moment, but there is a ton of interest in his services from other teams desperate for backs. I’m not adverse to dealing him because I’m very happy with my starters and can live with the bench guys as backups.

One offer involves Braylon Edwards and Kurt Warner for Jacobs and Campbell. I typically hate dealing stud RBs for stud WRs, but I am a little bit worried about Boldin’s health in light of his recent statements, and terrified of relying on David Carr or Vinny Testaverde to get Smith the rock. I love AZ’s sked over the rest of the year and believe Warner could be a dynamo. I have Boldin, Mason and Crayton all on byes this week and could use Edwards, but I am pretty sure I will smack this week’s opponent regardless, so that’s not a huge concern. Hate giving up Jacobs, but the insurance offered by Edwards, with Warner being a fine OP option, are pretty enticing. I’m leaning towards taking it. It is conceivable that I could demand Vince Young instead of Warner, but I’m not sure there.

The other deal involves sending Jacobs, Campbell and Foster for Derek Anderson, Andre Johnson and Chris Cooley. This is also somewhat enticing, given Anderson’s incredible stats, but I’m worried about Cleveland being dumb and inserting Quinn, and I’m also worried about Johnson’s knee.

    Any thoughts are much appreciated!!!

Yes. I support all references to Ed McCaffrey.

Dreamweapon – Interesting stuff. I was just in a mid-season draft last night, and Edwards went 12th overall, while Jacobs went 25th, for what it’s worth. But that was before reports came out that he’s 100 percent healthy and Derrick Ward isn’t, so I’m not saying I wouldn’t prefer Jacobs right now.

I think both of these deals make sense for you b/c of the OP factor and your depth at running back, which could be even better if these rumblings about Kenny Watson being the team’s starter are true. I do like Warner, but I worry about his health. Still, I consider Edwards as probably the third best fantasy WR right now (Moss and Housh are 1 and 2). The more I think about it, he might even be No. 2.

With all that said, I think I actually like the second deal better. I have Derek Anderson as the No. 5 fantasy QB on my board right now – I took him with the 50th pick in that draft last night. I’m a big believer. The Quinn factor is something that needs to be considered, but I think it’s Anderson’s job this year. And the way I see it, if Edwards blows up, well, you’ll still be getting those fantasy pts through Anderson, and if you are confident you’ll make the playoffs, you have a potential top-5 WR in Andre Johnson – don’t forget just how good he was before going down. I think he’ll return strong – he got sufficient rest. But it’s somewhat of a risk, I understand. Still, that’s the route I’d go, especially since Cooley is a pretty nice upgrade from Davis (who knows how long Watson will be out). I wouldn’t fault you one bit for taking the first deal (I do like both), but that’s my 2 cents.

Anderson big upgrade over Warner. A. Johnson COULD match Edwards’ stats come playoff time. Cooley nice addition.

All of that said, I do think Jacobs is going to have a big second half, but he comes with injury risk.

I think Jacobs has a chance to be huge in the 2nd half, and as much as I like Braylon, I’m not sure he’ll stay top-5 WR for the rest of the season (but I’d love to have him on any team regardless).

I’ve been stockpiling mediocre RB’s for most of the season, and now have to drop one of these guys to be able to play a TE (I’m planning on picking up Scheffler, as he looks like he’s coming on for Denver):

    Wynn
    Ward
    Chatman
    Watson

Wynn is the #1 back (and goal line) for a team that hardly runs. Ward is a backup and 3rd down back for a back who’s always injured (and racks up catches, always nice for PPR), Chatman was initially looking at stealing carries from Brown, and should have the gig to himself now, and Watson, who’s coming off a monster game and looks like he might hold on to the starting gig for a strong offense (which just got a win by counting on the running game). Roddy White is my only other option, but I’m going to hold on to him.

I figure it comes down to Wynn or Ward, but I’m really torn. Recommendations?

  15. RotoScoop Avatar

There’s not a chance in hell you should be dropping Roddy White, Chatman or Watson, so I agree, it comes down to Ward/Wynn. Here’s what I’d do – if you also own Jacobs, I’d drop Wynn (safer), but if you don’t own Jacobs, then dump Ward – who is dealing with a fairly serious ankle injury anyway. Plus, his upside is limited since Droughns gets the goal line carries if Jacobs is out. That’s what I’d do.

I might have to go with Scheffler in a league or two this week as well.

I’ve got Jacobs in one league, but not this one. My starters for the rest of the year are S-Jax and K.Jones, so I figure I’ll be playing matchups with Watson and Chatman for my flex, and same thing for White (I only mentioned him to get your reaction, don’t worry) and Calvin Johnson for my WR3 spot. I was leaning towards Ward with the fact that he always seems to be dinged up while Jacobs gets healthier, it’s just that he was so succseful when Jacobs was down, and they seem to be interested in throwing him the ball aplenty, but I figure it’s a better idea to go with the starter and goal-line back when in doubt…I guess it’s a good problem to have too many roster-worth backs.

    Thanks.
