I’m in a 10 team league and got thrashed the first week. I have Bulger/V. Young (backup), S. Jackson, E. James, A. Peterson, C. Johnson, M. Colston, Vernon Davis, and Baltimore.

I am leaning toward Vince Young this week with all of the OL struggles Stl has had. Should I be concerned with any spot?

    DDD,

Do you start Rivers or Garrard this week?

Also, I have two guys from this group to roll with this week: Chris Brown, Betts, D. Ward, Brandon Jackson, Julius Jones, Reggie Brown

    yo.

    I desperately need a RB2.
I’m heavy in WR’s, that i could trade, and i’m trying to get maybe Ronnie Brown from someone. how much trade value should i put towards him?

how about for brian westbrook. My WR’s i have are Harrison, Owens, S. Moss, Furrey. RB’s that i’m willing to trade are Warrick Dunn, and michael turner.

What do you think? are there any other RB2’s out there i should target, what might i offer, i feel like harrison and owens are both too much to give up for ronnie brown, but, santana moss might not be enough to get him.
this particular manager will not accept a 2for1.

oh yeah 12 team league, no ppr
we do get 5 bonus points for games with over 100yards rushing or 100yards receiving, so someone who may have predictable matchupfriendly, blowup games is worthwhile as well

I just can’t see Vince Young having a better game against Indy than Tony Romo against Miami… I don’t see another 3-4 TD game from Romo, but the Colts DEF looked solid last week and Young did not. I’m miffed here. Do you really see a bust out game against Indy?

  6. Nat Avatar
    Nat

Or maybe I’m still sore from having both Romo and the Indy DEF on my bench last week and am inclined to start Indy over San Diego this week because I don’t see Vince Young and TEN as a threat, compared to the Pats… Anyways, help me see your logic if you get a sec. Thanks.

MK – Your team is loaded – I wouldn’t be the tiniest bit concerned. Granted, it’s a 10-team league, but still, S-Jax, Colston and Davis will all bounce back this week. As you can see, I view Young and Bulger as extremely close plays this week, but I too give Young the slight nod. It may take St. Louis a couple of weeks to adjust to the new O-lineman, and if Monday was any indication, SF’s run defense is a much bigger concern than their secondary (Nate Clements was terrific).

Brett – Well, I put Rivers a couple of spots ahead of Garrard, but it is close. The way I see it, New England is bound to put up some points, so SD will def. have to pass a decent amount in that game, whereas I expect Jacksonville to go back to the ground game this week and play mostly with the lead. However, ATL is an easier matchup, and Garrard could chip in with rushing yards himself. As always, my best advice is to go with your own gut, but after watching Garrard (who I do think will be solid this year) struggle against a seemingly weak Tenn secondary last week, I would personally go with the superior real life QB in Rivers this week.

The second question comes down to Reggie Brown, Chris Brown and B. Jackson, at least for me. I expect R. Brown to respond from last week’s terrible start (he was still targeted six times, the most of any Philly WR), so I’d go with him. Above I put C. Brown ahead of B. Jackson, but I might be wavering on that. Indy’s D did look pretty good Thursday. I’ll say this – Brown has more upside (better long-speed, great O-line in front of him) but B. Jackson may be slightly safer (likely to get more touches since he’s not in a timeshare), and it’s not like the Giants’ D is anything special either. With J. Lorenzen AKA “The Pillsbury Throwboy” likely at the helm, GB could also be protecting a second half lead too, leading to more run opportunities. But Jackson hasn’t shown much so far in game action.

Chad – I’d trade S. Moss and Dunn for Ronnie Brown (who I assume most owners are down on), but it sounds like a 2-for-1 won’t work there. Obviously, in 99 percent of drafts Brown went before both Harrison and Owens, but I can understand you valuing both over him at this point, especially T.O. Personally, I’d offer Harrison and Dunn for Westbrook (yes, he’s an injury concern, but the guy is just such a yardage monster).

Other RB2s I like – Marshawn Lynch, Reggie Bush, maybe buy Maurice Jones-Drew low? I’d def. target him. I know Adrian Peterson had a big first game, so he’ll prob. be impossible to trade for, but I’d give up S. Moss and Dunn for him. Def. shop Dunn asap – Norwood is only going to get the ball more as the season progresses.

Let me know of any specific offers you get/ponder…

Nat – Well, you are talking to someone who had Young ranked as the No. 3 fantasy QB entering the year – so I’m clearly higher on him than most. Sure, he disappointed Week 1, but that hasn’t changed my view of him (he struggled both times against Jax last year). I completely understand your concern with Indy’s D – they def. looked great Thursday and most of it might even be for real. But I see this unit struggling against more physical offenses (N.O. is a finesse team), and Tenn’s O-line is very good. Plus, Young will be heavily involved, as Indy will almost certainly put up a decent amount of points, so Tenn will have to be passing a lot (this also leads to rushing attempts from Young, who racked up 121 rushing yards and a score last year vs. Indy).

Last week I get shit for having Romo ranked too high (#3) and this week it’s too low – that’s great. Anyway, I’m a big Romo fan and expect a huge year out of him, but he’s now facing a much better secondary (Mia) than NY’s joke of a unit, and plus he’ll be outdoors – always an adjustment for a dome team. We are talking about two guys I have in my top-tier for the week, so it’s not like I’d call you crazy for going Romo over Young, it isn’t a no-brainer or anything.

Also, if your league counts six points per TD pass, then I’d def. bump Young down a bit. Also, I’d start Indy D over SD D this week too.

Am I crazy for playing Portis over M. Jones- Drew? I got burned pretty badly last week by MJD and Portis should get even more carries this week.

  12. Robby Avatar
    Robby

Should I start Patrick Crayton or Deion Branch? I’m curious because you ranked Branch ahead of Crayton, but I wanted to see if you really meant it.

  13. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

DC – MJD had one bad game – but he still got all the goal line work and remains active in the passing game. I expect Jax to really concentrate on the ground game this week against a porous Atl defense. Portis, meanwhile, faces a much tougher opponent in Philly. Both are essentially in timeshares, as Betts will continue to see action. Portis did look surprisingly good last week, and Washington’s run blocking is some of the best in the game, but I’d personally go with MJD this week.

Both are real solid options though – you must be loaded. No other option to bench over them?

  14. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Robby – Nobody likes a smart ass. It’s good to ask for clarification – my reasoning may be the difference other than just the ranking. Plus, by the end of the week, sometimes my thoughts will have changed. And yes, I’d go with your boy Branch over Crayton this week.

  15. db Avatar
    db

    RS,
Should I be worried about starting Curry this week in my WR3 spot vs. Denver after the whooping Champ put on Lee Evans last week? Obviously, my other options are lower on your list than he is (Vincent Jackson and Patrick Crayton).

Maybe I’m wondering more on your reasoning than anything else. Every other site in the world has Curry jumping up the charts like crazy (YEAH!!!) but I haven’t heard anybody comment on his matchup this week vs. Denver and with a probable different QB (Culpepper over injured McCown). I’m worried about the matchup though nobody else seems to be… What are your thoughts? I guess I can see Oakland being down and having to throw lots whereas Buffalo was tight and in the lead in the 2nd half and didn’t take many shots downfield. Again, as always, thanks for your time. And thanks too for pimping Curry lots before my draft, he’s looking great so far!

    ok
got a trade going for my RB2 situation… I’m pretty sure i like it.
    I get:
    Alex Smith
    Reggie Bush
    I give:
    Matt Hasselbeck
    Marvin Harrison

    Thoughts?

Mybackup qb is trent green…. so between him and alex smith i’d be looking at matchups week to week, which sucks
but my backups to replace harrison are santana moss, mike furrey
and nate burleson(return yards worth same as rush/rec)

  17. chad Avatar
    chad

just got an offer from another team, i dont like it quite as much
    Iget:
    Reggie Brown and Chris brown
    I give:
    T.O.
    i’d probably drop Musa Smith

  18. RotoScoop Avatar

DB – I am definitely concerned with that matchup. However, studies have been done, and predicting WR perfromances based on matchups is way, way harder to do than QBs and RBs (the easiest of the positions to predict off opponent). Champ Bailey may shadow him the whole game, he may stay on one side of the field, they may go zone, who knows. Now, with Dre Bly (who is very capable), Denver may prove to be a nightmare on opposing WRs all year long, but Oakland figures to be playing from behind for the majority of this game, so plenty of pass plays will be called, and Curry is far and away the best Oak WR (Jordan is probably No. 2). Culpepper looked to Curry plenty during the preseason, so I’m not overly worried about who starts at QB. At a minimum, I could see Curry racking up catches on underneath routes as Denver pulls their safeties back protecting a lead in the fourth quarter.

Bottom line – it’s a tough matchup, but at this point, I’d have a hard time benching him unless I have a very good alternative, and I don’t see that in Crayton and/or Jackson (vs. NE, at least).

  19. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

To clarify, I probably would start V. Jackson over Curry this week if he had a better matchup – but NE is no cake walk either.

  20. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Chad – I really like the first trade and don’t like the second one at all. Especially if you can replace Harrison with S. Moss, then I’d pull the trigger. Your QB situation isn’t good, I won’t lie, but that will be much easier to rectify than finding a RB2, especially one with as much upside as Bush – forget the poor Week 1, he’s going to be huge this year.

And like you said, playing matchups with those QBs can at least produce decent results.

Interesting regarding return yards counting the same – I could see a guy like Burleson turning into a real star in that kind of format, especially if he can just turn into a decent No. 2 WR in that offense.

  21. chad Avatar
    chad

thanks 3D… yeah burleson and wes welker, both get huge bumps in this format, so do guys like jj arrington, and michael turner
I was about to go ahead and pull the trigger on that first trade, but he cancelled the offer, i’ve been calling him non stop since then.

  22. Keith Avatar

I didn’t think Robby was allowed to ask questions.

I’m glad to see you don’t let your Romo man-crush go overboard, but I’m surprised you have him that low. Is the Fins D that good?

I just pulled off a trade that I think I’m pretty happy with. I picked up Ward off the wire to use as a flex for the next week or two (I’d feel a lot better if it wasn’t the Hefty Lefty throwing), but just dealt LenDale White and Welker for Kevin Jones. I figure Jones should be good to go in 2-3 weeks or so, and I can use Ward in that time, and since it’s a PPR league, Jones should have major value in the 2nd half, and should shore up my weak RB corps. Decent move?

  23. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Chad – That sucks. Let me know what happens.

  24. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

    Keith – He’s not.

Miami’s D was good last year, but they obviously didn’t look too great Week 1 (although 50 of those yards came on a Hail Mary). Maybe I should’ve put Romo a little higher, but it was more of a I really like the others’ matchups than an indictment on Romo, who is still in my top-tier. The move out of a dome should be considered, but I’d have no problem starting him this week, that’s for sure.

I love that trade. Jones may already get a little game action this week. As long as he can come back somewhat close to full strength, he’ll be the man in Detroit. That system requires a power running game, something T. Bell clearly lacks. Also, it’s imperative the back can catch, another area KJ is superior in. Ward makes for a fine stopgap, and by the 2nd half of the season, Jones has major upside. Nice move.

  25. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Plus, if I rank Romo in my top-3 every single week, people might start getting the wrong idea.

  26. chad Avatar
    chad

he proposed methat same trade again… i jumped on it.

Reggie bush for marvin harrison and hasselbeck, and then he dropped alex smith this time, so that means i’ll start trent green this week, and pick up some scrub to play the matchup game with for next week… but i think the LT/Bush/TO combination is pretty lights out.

  27. chad Avatar
    chad

so with this new situation would you put warrick dunn or santana moss in the flex… non-ppr

  28. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Def. a sick trio there. And Green isn’t a terrible play this week against a Dallas secondary that was shredded last week.

I’d play Santana Moss over Dunn. Tough matchup for ATL, and they’ll incorporate Norwood more this week. Moss should be solid enough.

DDD and Robby, what do u think of this trade, I got Marshawn Lynch and Patrick Crayton for Marion Barber III and Jerricho Cotchery, I have Marvin Harrison Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson at WR, so I figured Cotchery was worth it to upgrade my RB which now stand as Addai, Jones-Drew, Lynch, Taylor, Foster and Derrick Ward (The NYG starter with Jacobs out)

  31. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

I love that trade for you Kritter. Cotchery to Crayton isn’t a huge downgrade, and while I like Barber, Lynch looks like a top-15 fantasy player right now. Great deal for you.

  32. Keith Avatar
    Keith

That’s a great trade. I need to find a league where people are more willing to part with their RB’s!

  33. Keith Avatar
    Keith

D3, do you figure that Lynch is pretty much a top-15 or so RB for the rest of the season? He only caught 2 balls in week 1, but in general, he should catch a lot of balls and be an even better asset in PPR leagues, right? I then assume that something along the lines of DeAngelo Williams + Calvin Johnson for him would be a plus move for my team (and something that might have a chance of being accepted), even if it robs me of a lot of depth and probably leaves me scrounging for WR3 types and bye-week fill-ins on a weekly basis? Yay/nay?

  34. Keith Avatar
    Keith

This might get up to 35+ comments, is that some kind of record!?

  35. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Yes, I’d treat Lynch like a top-15 player right now. He’s definitely a good receiver, so he’s a great asset in PPR leagues. – he’ll be more active in the passing game as the season progresses. I’d offer that deal – as much as I like C. Johnson, he’s still a rookie, and WR3 types can be found much easier than a true RB2 (and Lynch is one of the better RB2s).

And yes, this definitely breaks the RotoScoop record for most comments. I feel so proud.

  36. Kritter77 Avatar
    Kritter77

Well, the guy that dealt me Lynch felt he was expendable after his pickup of Chris Brown which worked very well for him, but I still beat him thanks to my WR combo, personally I feel he made a bad choice, but I had to go for it, hopefully this is what I need to take it down.
