Fantasy Football Auction

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

Folks, fantasy football season is fast approaching, and this blog has ignored it long enough. It ends now. With my fantasy baseball teams making a huge surge midseason (and hopefully yours too) it’s easy to forget August is almost here, and by now, multiple fantasy football mags should have already been devoured. RotoScoop will soon be unveiling rankings, strategy and all other sorts of useful info. First, let’s start with an industry auction I partook in Monday: the results can be found here. And more on it can be found over at Yahoo!

But I’ll throw my two cents in here. Believe it or not, this was my first auction, ever. In any fantasy sport. Getting thrown into the fire in an “experts” league probably isn’t an ideal way to pop my cherry, but that’s the way it worked out. In the end, I became a big fan – affording everyone the opportunity at every single player is simply a huge advantage over drafting, when position in draft order precludes that. Unlike a draft, it’s essentially your turn with every pick, opposed to once every 10-14 choices. I’m not sure I can ever go back to the prehistoric method of drafting after this, especially when considering how an auction allowed me to assemble this squad: ($200 salary cap)

QB-Vince Young ($14)
RB-LaDainian Tomlinson ($80)
RB-Maurice Jones-Drew ($54)
WR-Reggie Brown ($15)
WR-Braylon Edwards ($9)
WR-D.J. Hackett ($6)
TE-Ben Watson ($3)
K-Stephen Gostkowski ($1)
D-Denver Broncos ($1)

B-Vincent Jackson ($6)
B-Michael Turner ($5)
B-Jerry Porter ($2)
B-Brandon Marshall ($2)
B-Alex Smith ($1)
B-Oakland Raiders ($1)

My $80 bid on Tomlinson was my first and it came about five seconds into the draft. In the end, I think he’s worth about 40 percent of your budget, especially since I was able to later pair him with Turner at an affordable price.

The $14 Young bid was my favorite of all. Guys like Drew Brees and Marc Bulger went for $29 and $28, respectively. Donovan McNabb went for $15, while Brandon “Big Board” Funston acquired Jon Kitna for the same $14. I probably should’ve secured a better backup, but mark this selection down as the S.O.D.

I’m big on MJD this year, but I probably went a little high on him at $54. I got into a bidding war with one other guy, and the back and forth ended up costing me around $8-10 more than I would’ve liked to have spent. Joseph Addai only went for $3 more.

I wanted Antonio Gates, but again got into a pissing match with another owner, finally giving up when his price tag reached $27. Instead, I looked to fill out my receiving corps with undervalued guys like Brown, Edwards, Hackett and Jackson. Those names won’t jump out at you on paper, but I’m actually pretty happy with them.

The one time that your “draft position” matters is late in the draft. Typically, when it was my turn early on, I’d call out a name of someone I had no intention of bidding on and hoped others jacked up the price and spent excessively. But when the auction was winding down, having the ability to call out the name did make a difference, as most had spent all of their budget, so throwing the name of a $1 kicker or end-game defense would most likely result in you getting them, because few were willing to up it to $2. Nothing worse than finishing the draft with money still to burn.

Ultimately, I like my team, but this league has some strong competition, and I’m extremely thin at the running back position. Hopefully Porter or Marshall pans out, and I’ll look to pull off a trade eventually. Anyway, are you ready for some football?

Knowing evans, I am sure he was wasted.

You’ve taken your first step into a much larger world. My baseball league is in our 2nd year of auction drafting and we’re never going back. Trying to get the football league to do it too.

You overspent on MJD, in the end he’s still a part-timer as long as Fred Taylor is healthy.

Donald – Did you get my apology/explanation about the “sox” from the previous post? I promise I’ll stop drinking before noon when commenting on this blog from now on.

Jason – Yes I have taken a big step. And I’m not sure I can ever go back. It’s definitely better.

MJD – I agree. However, I’m higher on him than most (I’ll give some thorough explanations in future writeups), but there’s no denying that’s a lot to spend on a guy who doesn’t even start for his own team. The big thing is that he’s their goal line runner, but he’ll have to be awfully productive in somewhat limited touches to justify that price tag. Counting on an injury is never a good thing, but you just know Fragile Fred is a ticking time bomb after such a healthy season and now 31 years old.

I like Vince Young at $14 and Alex Smith at $1, but I’m surprised you let J.P. Losman go on the cheap for a bare five bones. Here’s a guy who has people in Buffalo turning Buddhist, because they swear Jim Kelly has been reincarnated. Now that they’re rid of Willis McGahee, a notorious prima donna, defenses won’t be able to drop back and blanket Evans and Roscoe, which should mean Buffalo will finally be able to establish a running game that will only open up more passing lanes for the former Tulane stand-out. Here’s a name you don’t hear anymore: Kelly Holcombe.

Totally agree about Losman (7.5 YPA during 2nd half last year) and the Bills offense. Lynch is an upgrade over McGahee (b/c he can actually catch the ball), and Lee Evans is probably the second best/most explosive receiver in the NFL behind only Steve Smith. Losman also runs a bit for a QB, so the $5 price tag does look like a pretty decent bargain.

Do you want to do this for our draft?

    Can we make it live?

    Yes, maybe.

Auctions pretty much have to be live.

Looks pretty solid…though Addai for only $3 more really hurts, but I know you’re a big MoJo fan, and it’s always more fun to get one of your boyz. I still think Braylon Edwards has a ton of upside too. I’ve been interested in trying an auction for a while now, but just haven’t found a good league that does it. We are using a free agent budget for one of my baseball leagues this season, so that’s kind of interesting, but obviously way less impacting than a full auction.

After the Warriors made the Bay Area sports scene as exciting as it had been for a long time, this baseball season is really sucking the air out of it. Now I want the Warriors to go get Yi just to give me something entertaining again.

I’m a fan of the Oompa Loompa, but I’d much rather Addai for just 3 bucks more. Addai’s name was thrown out there immediately after I spent so much on LT, and at the time, I didn’t realize that would turn out to be a bargain. I like Edwards, but hate the QB situation in Cleveland.

Ya, I recommend trying an auction at least once. It’s got a totally didn’t flavor and strategy to it. Check out – http://www.fantasyauctioneer.com/ – that’s the site we used and it was solid. What are your thoughts on FAAB? Mine are mixed.

I hear ya about Bay Area sports. The A’s are going south in a hurry. At least they finally won today. G. State could totally get Yi tho. And football is just around the corner.

The FAAB is interesting. Now that I have a job that actually requires more work and offers less privacy, I do favor a system that doesn’t reward the person who spends the most time at the computer and can be quicker to the waiver wire than anyone else. Of course, it really works best in leagues with weekly lineup changes, which is something I’m still not entirely sold on. I like to be active adding and dropping players so having to control myself is a little tough. It didn’t help that I drafted an injury prone team with only one DL spot, but I’ve had to blow a lot of my budget just on injury replacements (your boy Baldelli, Harden, Sheets, Upton, Hughes, Ramon Hernandez twice, Bill Hall, Al Reyes, Willy Taveras, etc etc).

Get Yi, go Alex Smith, feed Vernon Davis (my sleeper TE), and please stay healthy Gore!!

Ya good points – I hate weekly leagues, but FAAB does work best that way, and I think that method has its advantages. Ultimately, I’d probably side with the first come, first serve side, but it’s understandable with FAAB, especially with football, since I’m always at a bar watching all the games on Sundays, when the most crucial pickups are usually made.

I really wanted VD (Vernon Davis, not the disease) during that auction, but I was thin in the pocket book when his name came up. I’m big on him as well. It’s funny with the 49ers this year, b/c they are going to end up being everyone’s sleeper pick to win that division. I don’t disagree, but it’s weird thinking of them as a bandwagon team nowadays.

My football league is going to switch to an auction draft this year, for the first time. Can anyone describe how free agent bidding would be done during the season? Thanks.

    RotoScoop

Well, once the draft is over, you can pretty much make free agents how you want them – that is, the price tag for your players becomes irrelevant as long as it’s not a keeper league. So if you wanted to, you could still have a first come, first serve free agent system, or one with waivers. That said, the FAAB (free agent acquisition budget) we talked about above is another method.

In FAAB, you are given a set amount of dollars (usually $100 or $1000) and you make blind bids on players usually during a once a week time frame. The person with the highest bid wins that player, but the ($100 or $1000) is all you get for the entire season.

Awesome, and thanks very much. I’m not sure how blind bidding would work in practice (the commish has to receive the bids, but what if he wants to bid?).
My league is looking forward to the draft much more now that we have decided to have an auction.

  16. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

No, it works just fine as long as the system that runs your league carries the FAAB option. The commish doesn’t see the bids until everyone else does. We did this with our football league last year and it worked well. It runs through the system, the commish is just like any other league participant for that part of it.

Makes total sense. Doesn’t transfer to a yahoo league. I think we will maintain the waiver system, but are looking forward to the auction draft. Thanks for the info.
