The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

Rickie Weeks presents an interesting dilemma; on one hand, he’s a mid-round selection whom I could see becoming a top-10 pick next season. He has 35/35 upside. However, he’s no secret, and my “mid-round” proclamation keeps getting higher and higher. As does his price tag in auctions. He’s officially starting to become an expectant cost, rather than speculative. His walk rate soared last year and his final six weeks were flat-out ridiculous (11 homers, 15 steals). However, injuries and batting average remain concerns. He’s never had more than 409 at-bats in a season and has hit better than .300 in just two of the 16 months he’s played in the big leagues. Still, he has to be considered a top-5 fantasy second baseman right now.

Few, if any, pitchers in baseball have better stuff than Rich Harden. However, the guy’s body has simply failed him, and his unwillingness to pitch through pain means eventual surgery may be the only resolution. The fact he has already complained of pain and required a cortisone shot can’t be good signs. Maybe he’ll put it all together one season, and he’s becoming cheaper and cheaper in fantasy leagues after burning so many past owners, but Harden has to be considered one of the bigger disappointments in baseball over the past few seasons.

Instead of always going for the young, high upside pick, sometimes it’s better to land an under the radar veteran in the right situation. That’s why I’m targeting Ryan Church in NL-only leagues. After posting a solid .886 OPS over the second half last season, a move out of RFK Stadium can only help, as does joining the potent Mets’ lineup, where he should actually have plenty of job security, as least versus righties. I’m expecting a .275-23-90 season.

No one’s fantasy value went up more than Clay Buchholz’s recently. I would be shocked if Curt Schilling throws another pitch during his career, leaving 180 innings for Buchholz. Sure, there will be some growing pains, and throwing in the AL East limits his ceiling, but this kid’s stuff is for real. Last year’s 22.2 innings pitched was obviously a small sample size, but that they resulted in 22 strikeouts, zero home runs allowed and a no-hitter suggests big things to come. If forced to choose, I’d rather Joba Chamberlain long-term, but there’s really no wrong answer between those two.

With Kelvim Escobar suffering his yearly injury already, I’d strongly advise avoiding him, no matter how much he slips because of it. Escobar has the talent to win a Cy Young someday, but he’s another hurler who simply cannot stay healthy for a long stretch of time. And yes, this makes Ervin Santana worth a late-round flier yet again. Maybe once everyone has finally given up, that’s when he’ll turn the corner. Maybe.

Speaking of underachievers, don’t forget about Carlos Quentin, whose 2007 season was ruined by a shoulder injury. He gets a fresh start in Chicago now, where he’ll be batting in one of the most homer-friendly parks in the game. He could prove to be a steal this year. Also, the White Sox in general have a much better team than most realize. Their lineup is legit, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they finish ahead of the Indians in the AL Central this season.

Roy Oswalt will be appearing on exactly zero of my fantasy teams. A rising walk rate combined with a sinking K rate is a recipe for collapse. He actually turned in a very solid second half last season, but with his body type, he never figured to be a horse into his 30s. I’d take Matt Cain over him in a heartbeat.

If you’re searching for a deep sleeper, look no further than Dallas McPherson, who is entering the “post-hype” phase of his young career. Back problems and ugly strikeout rates have failed him so far, but new surroundings in Florida may lead to some of that potential finally being reached. There’s legitimate power here.

Dont mean to sound picky but I think to be classified a veteran you need to have played 5 seasons in MLB and Ryan Church is over 30 years old but has played in only a little over 3 seasons.

Carey and Cruise might currently be the best actors in the business and those are some good movies (although I did not see them all). A couple other good ones that come to mind are The Truman Show and Risky Business. I just watched “The Number 13” last week and I did not like it very much.

I meant to say “The Number 23”. I was expecting it to be better.

Ya good point about Church. I actually thought of that when I wrote it, but I was trying to get across a broader point, and he somewhat falls under the category because of his age and status as a non-elite prospect.

I was very close to putting both Truman Show and Risky Business on the lists. They are both No. 6 for me, so I’m with you there. Also, I didn’t like The Number 23 either.

    DDD,

I agree with you on almost everything, but I’ve gotta say your taste is Jim Carrey movies is questionable. The Majestic, Liar Liar, and Bruce Almighty are all better movies than the Cable Guy. I am also in the minority of people who dislike Ace Ventura. I found it more annoying than amusing.

Also, how could any Tom Cruise list not have Born on the Fourth of July?

I still think you’re great DDD–I just disagree with you here.

I figured I’d get heat for including Cable Guy, one of the more misunderstood/underrated movies. Most people hate on it, but after repeat viewings, it’s better than the perception. I have a filmmaker friend who has it in his top-10 all-time.

Anyway, I thought Bruce Almighty was funny, but I can’t get behind The Majestic.

I will say, however, that I haven’t seen Born of the 4th of July in forever and barely remember it. So I neglected to include that based on lack of knowledge, not on lack of worthiness. You’re probably right about that one.

This is my favorite Tom Cruise movie of all-time:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFBZ_uAbxS0

Straight up Looney Tunes. I’m sorry, I can’t even take that guy seriously and actually religiously (haha, can’t resist a good pun) avoid all movies with him in it–the last one I saw was ‘War of the Worlds’, which I guess I would describe as competently boring, and even that one I only went to b/c it was hot as hell in the city and my AC had broken. Of course, I’m a “SP” and have modeled my life on that of my personal hero, the father of all “SPs”, Genghis Khan, so take that as you will.

Back to baseball–yeah, Weeks’ stock is rising fast. There are so few MIs with his potential, I suppose it was inevitable. You will love this: last year, in our keeper, I acquired Weeks for a package of Hideki Okajima and Gil Meche. [g] It’s a HLDs league, but I simply picked up Jon Rauch to replace Okajima and didn’t miss a beat. I still smile whenever I think about that one.

Dude, you did it again. Stellar baseball speculation, followed by shoddy pop-culture analysis.

How can you have a Top 5 Jim Carey list without Truman Show on it? And Eternal Sunshine is number one, regardless how funny Dumb & Dumber is.

And how can a Ton Cruise list not include Jerry McGuire, which should be number one in my opinion. Also, Magnolia was not a ‘Tom Cruise movie’ & Vanilla Sky was horrible.

Believe it or not I saw Vanilla Sky in Istanbul, of all places, back in January of ’02. I cannot recall a single image or line from entire flick, but then again, I spent most of the time in the theater making out with this hot Turkish chick I had met a couple of nights before. Interesting times. So I can’t knock it, I definitely had fun.

Anyway, here is my pop-culture analysis for the day, hope it helps:

    Top-5 Films of the 1990s:
    1. The Thin Red Line (gorgeous meditative synopsis of man’s dualistic nature which managed, like Hemmingway’s ‘Farewell to Arms’ to actualy capture the pace of warfare, with the long, languid stretches punctuated by staccato terror….most ppl just didn’t get it, but most ppl are dumb)
    2. Trainspotting (criminally underwatched; anyone who hasn’t seen shouldn’t be permitted to comment on any film, ever, period….every single scene is essential and perfect in its way, it has no weaknesses)
    3. Miller’s Crossing (for my money the best gangster film of all-time; excellent use of vernacular, some of cinema’s most memorable scenes)
    4. Fight Club (managed to combine ethos and pathos in equal measure, eminently rewatchable)
    5. everything else is overrated in some way, so none

I’ve tried to watch Eternal Sunshine at least 2 or 3 times and keep passing out within the first 15 minutes. I need to load up on coffee or something and try again. Dumb & Dumber is one of those movies that I still find myself quoting, even though I don’t think I’ve seen it in 5+ years.

Anyway, I think Weeks is getting drafted too high to really be a value pick anymore. Nobody can argue against his upside, but you basically have to draft him at that point where he needs to meet his most optimistic projections to be a good value. I think Kendrick is looking like a pretty good gamble that can be had later in the draft. If I see Weeks slipping though, I’ll be all over him.

Dreamweapon, use smaller and simpler words so I can follow along…thanks.

The White Sox lineup should be good, and I’ve been a Quentin fan for a while (maybe Robby was chummy with him too). If he is healthy and gets the PT, I think he could mash.

I’m curious if they’ll stick Swisher at the top of the order (they should), and then it makes me wonder if Ozzie would actually try to get Swish to run more. He’s fast enough to play center, but don’t know if he’s ever been much of a threat on the basepaths. As Byrnes’ 50-steals shows, there have been some guys on the A’s that could burn if given the chance.

  11. Dreamweapon Avatar
    Dreamweapon

LOL, I’m not trying to be all up my own arse or anything, don’t take me too seriously.

Do you seriously think Quentin will get PT? Ozzie seems like he is hopelessly in love with Jerry Owens for some reason (I don’t know why, Owens would maybe be a nice 4th or 5th OF for some team, but he shouldn’t be a central cog in anyone’s offense)….I basically think Quentin needs to hit close to .400 this Spring to have a chance of starting. I hope I’m wrong, watching Sox games is tough enough as it is with that oaf Hawk Harrelson on the mic; watching them throw a bunch of Quad-A guys out there is too much to take….but maybe the incentive I need to shell out for Extra Innings.

I would likewise be shocked if they put Swisher in the leadoff spot, but I can see him hitting in the two hole, which might still be pretty nice. Maybe he does have some speed, it’s a fair point….I had always considered him a lumbering corner ox, but maybe he can swipe 15 or 20, who knows? Something to consider.

At the end of the day, I see the Sox going like 75-87 or thereabouts. They’re just too damn old, and the pitching is horrible. Vazquez has proven time and again that he is not a staff ace, and Buehrle seems league average at best by this point. I hate Danks and Contreras has nothing left. The other problem is that the rest of the division bulked up–Miggy and Renteria to Detroit, Delmon to Minnesota. If Meche holds up and Greinke does his thing, the Sox could be looking at 5th place. I hate to say it, I really do. Just as long as they beat the Cubs, I’ll still be happy.

PS: on the pop-cult tip, check out Ruby Suns forthcoming ‘Sea Lion’. Easily my favorite (pre) release of the year so far in sounds. The last third of ‘Morning Sun’ channels the very best of anything put out by the Manchester scene in the late 70s and early 80s, which is high praise indeed from a Joy Division fettishist.

Is Milledge not eligible in a corner spot? If not (hell, even if so), I would personally try to deal him and Jones both for Upton and call it the heist of the season if you can get away with it.

I hear ya, BJ’s big year has sent his little brother’s stock skyrocketing. I recently tried to deal the prospect rights to both Hughes and Maybin for the rights to Upton and a guy to be named later (I’d have to use a draft pick of my own to burn on him) and it wasn’t enough (the guy basically demanded that I also give him the rights to Stephen Drew in exchange for Hermida, which was too steep a price). I wouldn’t do Sizemore, I just wouldn’t–too much uncertainty, and the goal is to win in the here and now, which Sizemore can with more than Upton can, for at least the next couple of years. Between now and then you will have numerous opportunities to bring in another premium corner OF.

You still have six or seven weeks. It seems pretty likely that both Jones and Milledge have starting gigs–I guess I would say try to ride it out for a bit and see whether one of them really tears it up during spring training, then you can get an appropriate return. Of the two, I would definitely look to move Milledge first, FWIW.

Dreamweapon – Tom Cruise is bat shit crazy. No doubt about it…Nice trade for Weeks. That owner should be kicked out of the league…I’m reading up on what it means to be a Suppressive Person right now…

  18. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Tyler Durden – Like I said, I was very close to putting Truman show on there. I agree that was very good. And I expected some people to call “Vanilla Sky” horrible. The love scenes in the beginning can be corny, and the end gets a little out there. I was in a terrible car accident like a month or two before that came out, so I guess that was one of those personal things – that part really affected me at the time. Seeing pretty boy Cruise all mangled and I had no idea what the movie was about entering it. But I can’t really defend it b/c some aspects are pretty bad. Cameron Crowe kind of blew it. I heard the foreign version is much, much better.

Another good point is that Magnolia isn’t really a Tom Cruise movie. But his character is pretty sweet in it, and he does make a pretty big impact. I can enjoy Jerry Maguire if I pass it on HBO or something, but there’s a little too much “You complete me” for it to be No. 1 for me.

  19. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Keith – With Weeks, that’s exactly what I was trying to get across when I said expectant cost. In order for him to reach his price tag, he’d pretty much have to go 25/25. He’s not going based on last year’s injury-plagued year, that’s for sure.

Excellent point about players on the A’s stealing much more after leaving. I always underrated organizational philosophy with SBs.

  20. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Dreamweapon – Was the Istanbul girl hot? Keep stories like that coming. And it’s been far too long since I’ve seen Trainspotting. That was a good reminder for me to rent it again.

I hear ya regarding Ozzie’s unpredictable ways, but didn’t he learn his lesson with Podsednik? If Quentin plays up to his potential, he’ll be in the lineup. And you’ll be hearing Hawk: “You can put it on the board, YES!!”

You’ve got to get Extra Innings. Come on now.

I’m worried about Vazquez reverting to his strong peripherals, 4.50 ERA days, and I’ve never been too high on Beurhle, but I think you are selling that offense and pen short. Minny may have got Delmon, but they lost Johan (then again, they get Liriano too).

I’ll bet you the White Sox win 80 games this year.

  21. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Pop-Culture – OK I’ll def. check out Ruby Suns. What about “Working for a Nuclear Free City.” That’s the Manchester scene. I’m pretty into them. Check em out if you haven’t.

Also, everyone needs to go out and rent “King of Kong: A Fistfull of Quarters” Not only is it the best documentary of the year, but I would have put it on my top-5 for any movies of the year had I seen it in time.

  22. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Randy – I like Justin Upton a very good amount, but my guess is that you’ll be happy that your A. Jones/Chamberlain offer was turned down 2-3 years from now. I’d do everything you can to hang onto Joba. And people seem to be selling A. Jones short. He’s a fantastic defender with little competition in Balt, so he should play quite a bit this year. While he’s not quite ready, neither is Upton. If Upton is a future 35/35 guy, Jones can be a 30/30 type.

Do not trade Jones for Church or Quentin – no way.

Milledge is the guy to shop, but I agree with Dreamweapon, wait it out and hope his trade value increases with a big spring, something that could easily happen. His disappointing year last season is too fresh in everyone’s mind right now.

Give me other offers that you come by or think of, b/c obviously you need to get rid of a CF, but don’t do any of the above deals.

  23. Keith Avatar

Also, am I having flashbacks, or did you already do a Jim Carrey list…I swear we’ve had this discussion about the merits of Cable Guy before.

If Quentin is playing as a 4th OF’er, I hope Billy Beane starts wearing out the phone lines.

“Expectant Cost”; again, keep the words small. I could have sworn value was speculative while cost was actual; I suppose I should have picked up on your jist anyway. That’s what happens when the only things in the engineering curriculum are math and harder math.
