Monday Morning Quarterback

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong. I expected New England to win handily. However, with that said, the outcome did not come as a shock, as this Patriots team just hasn’t looked the same recently. I won’t call it the biggest upset in the history of the league, but I will call it the most improbable (and impressive) run in the postseason ever. New York is the lowest NFC seed to ever win the Super Bowl. They also became the first SB winner with just one Pro Bowler on their roster.

The opening drive was absolutely huge. Sure, it resulted in only a field goal, but the Giants offense ran 10 minutes off the clock and really set the tone for the game.

The Giants defense flat-out dominated. After New York’s first drive, its offense did little favors, putting the onus heavily on the D. This was the best offense in the history of the NFL in perfect conditions, and the G-Men’s defensive line recorded five sacks, hit Tom Brady 16 times and pressured him 23 times. Also, they held the star QB to just 5.5 YPA and the running game to a paltry 2.8 YPC. It was one of the single greatest defensive performances I’ve witnessed.

It’s David Tyree’s world, the rest of us are just passing through. Fun fact: he entered Sunday with more tackles than receptions for the season.

The one clear negative from Sunday’s terrific game is that we now still have to deal with the insufferable 1972 Dolphins.

Ahmad Bradshaw, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, Jay Alford – it’s safe to say the Giants did a nice job with their 2007 Draft.

It’s almost unfathomable, but it’s hard to argue that Steve Spagnuolo and company didn’t outcoach Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Speaking of which, you couldn’t have paid me enough money to conduct that interview with the red-hooded one afterward. Cold would be a nice way of describing his demeanor. Oh, and who cares if he left the field 1 second early?

The commercials were downright brutal. And nice lip-syncing, Mr. Tom Petty.

After “leading” the NFC in turnovers, Eli Manning improbably played nearly mistake-free football throughout the playoffs. Before Week 17 against the Pats, Manning hadn’t thrown for multiples TDs in any of his previous eight games. He tossed multiple scores in four of the five contests since. Also, for some reason, he really excels at the no-huddle, which was obviously huge Sunday.

So not only was Plaxico Burress playing with a bum ankle but also a sprained MCL? I doubt many Steeler fans predicted his career would take this kind of turn.

Were Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey literally negatives for this franchise?

That was the loudest Super Bowl crowd I can remember. It sure seemed like the suits stayed at home, and the seats were filled with actual football fans.

I can understand the constant flashing to Peyton Manning would annoy some, but I actually enjoyed watching him show genuine happiness rooting for his brother.

It’s likely a coincidence, but there’s been one common dominator involving two of the NFL’s biggest upsets over the past decade, and that’s Randy Moss.

How refreshing, a Super Bowl that wasn’t decided by the refs.

D.D.D. I’d like to thank you for writing this little piece. I couldn’t agree with you more about genuinely enjoying watching Peyton show genuine happiness rooting for Eli. It was one of my favorite parts of this Super Bowl, and a memory that I will value for quite some time.

“The one clear negative from Sunday’s terrific game is that we now still have to deal with the insufferable 1972 Dolphins.”

    Couldn’t. Agree. More.

It’s a shame the Pats didn’t win – and I say that not only as a fan, but also as someone who was hoping to have watched a perfect season all the way through. If that team couldn’t do it, I’m not sure we’ll ever see it done. I feel like that was our chance.

I’m a Pats fan and therefore by default a Manning-basher (only when he’s on the field)) but I actually enjoyed seeing Peyton there cheering. Jeremy Shockey, however, pounding brews with his boys? Um, in baseball, you suit up and sit with your team. How is this acceptable behavior in football?

Who in their right mind was hoping to watch a perfect season? Sure, I am a giants fan, but I have been watching the last 8 or 9 new england games, and they were completely beatable by mediocre teams for a while. I think it would have been a shame if they had won, because they would have gone down as probably the greatest team of all time, which they clearly were not, and that was obviously long before the GIANTS WON THE SUPERBOWL!!!

yeah I was also wondering why Jeremy Shockey wasn’t on the sidelines.

btw all you Pats fans who are sick of the Peyton Manning commercials, just watch out, Eli’s coming for your advertisement dollars next year.

    DDD,

Being a Giants fan aside, I stated last week that their D line and Line are the reason they were here..

They also were the reason they won the Super Bowl.

Nice point on the 4 draft picks from this year… Alford is in for one play and gets a sack.. good thing Robbins got injured there at the end.

How important were the Giants role players?

Steve Smith with a catch on 3rd and 11..

Tyree with a TD and the amazing catch..

Bradshaw with 45 yards and Jacobs with an excellent job blocking not to mention the biggest yard of his career on 4th and 1..

I don’t know if anyone else noticed how well Jacobs blocks in the pass rush… any comments on moving him to starting FB/short yardage back and letting Bradshaw play at the half back?

Any chance Shockey gets released in the offseason or better yet, traded for Chad Johnson?

Nate – Yeah Shockey is a sack. I loved how one of the three drinks it showed in front of him was white wine. He seems more like the Bud Light type.

An Mercury Morris needs to just go away.

Seems like the Pats season can pretty clearly be broken up into two parts – the first half in which they were the most dominate force of all-time unquestionably. And then the second half, when they were merely “great” but the deep ball aspect slowly faded away.

I wonder how much Brady’s ankle injury factored in Sunday. Not to take anything away from the G-Men’s terrific defensive effort, but it was an issue.

Brett – You brought up three excellent and key points to Sunday’s game. That 3rd and 11 catch by Steve Smith was awesome. He caught it, maintained his balance, ran the extra two yards to pick up the first and then fell immediately out of bounds. Sounds easy enough, but I see WRs fail at this way more often than not.

Jacobs’ blocking was outstanding. Did you see NE try to blitz on that fade TD to Burress? He blew it up.

Jacobs’ fourth and one first down was obviously huge, and it was very close to not making it.

I love Bradshaw’s game, but part of his amazing postseason run comes from Jacobs taking the first half carries and pounding the opposition and tiring/wearing them out. Bradshaw then comes in with fresh legs. Still, he is pretty damn good. That one where he carried that LB on his back was sick.

I see Jacobs getting a 65/35 split next year, but that might become more 50/50, and he’s still also injury-prone. It certainly knocks Jacobs way down fantasy draft boards. I’d select Bradshaw over some starting RBs. He’ll be a great upside pick.

Forget Chad Johnson. Giants don’t need him.

apparently Shockey didn’t show up today at the parade either
along with Burress (injury? surgery?) and Osi, who’s probably chilling on the beach in Maui

One argument for Shockey’s behavior was that maybe he didn’t want to upstage his teammates, who were the ones actually accomplishing the feat on the field. More likely, however, is that he was just being a dick.
