Monday Morning Quarterback

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

For those of you counting at home, that’s three straight impressive efforts from Joey Harrington. Despite a 1-3 record, I’m convinced Bobby Petrino can be a successful NFL head coach…Roddy White didn’t put up eye-popping stats Sunday, but he continued to be targeted and pulled in a terrific 34-yard catch. He’s going to be a solid WR3 from here on out…DeMeco Ryans might be the NFL’s best kept secret.

If you missed the first half of the Jets/Bills tilt, consider yourself lucky…Chad Pennington throws a pretty fade route, but the windy New York does no favors to his weak arm…Finally, the Jets have made a conscious effort to get Leon Washington involved…Trent Edwards had about as good of a first NFL start as one can hope for, and it looks like Lee Evans’ fantasy value isn’t dead after all.

R.I.P., vaunted Baltimore Ravens defense…Braylon Edwards is the NFL’s next superstar at wideout…The same could be said about Kellen Winslow at tight end…Derek Anderson is currently getting 8.3 YPA.

I already have the October 14 Dallas vs. New England game circled on my calendar…Don’t look now, but the Cowboys defense has really improved with each passing game…Jason Witten has to be treated like the third best fantasy tight end from this point forward…I want to have Tony Romo’s children…The numbers don’t show it, but Brian Leonard looked like he’ll be a more than capable fill-in; if only the once potent Rams offense didn’t look like the worst in the league.

Call me crazy, but I’m not kicking the ball to Devin Hester…I want to give Brian Griese more than one start before rushing to judgment, but Chicago’s offense appears to be in big trouble this season…And part of the problem is Cedric Benson, who is simply a poor excuse for an NFL running back…Kevin Jones might not be a terrible buy-low guy right now.

Let me offer a personal apology to Raider fans: I’m sorry, this team is probably winning more than the 2-3 games I expected…There will never be a better fantasy game from a quarterback who threw for only 72 yards than Daunte Culpepper’s effort Sunday…I’m beginning to think Miami’s run defense just isn’t very good…If a fantasy draft were held today, I’m making Ronnie Brown a top-10 pick.

Quick, try to name the Vikings’ starting wide receivers…Certainly not from a fantasy standpoint – Brad Childress would have none of that – but Adrian Peterson right now is a top-5 NFL running back when on the field…Take a look at the NFC North standings. Can you say bizarro world?

The Carnell Williams injury was brutal – one of those where you just knew it was season-ending the moment it happened…If there’s someone in your league who still values DeAngelo Williams’ upside, go ahead and deal him for 75 cents on the dollar…This just in: David Carr is not a very good NFL quarterback…And to think, I almost had Ike Hilliard in my lineup…There hasn’t been a more overrated team over the past few years than the Carolina Panthers

Thank God I turned down 49er tickets this week – I became a worse football player just watching Trent Dilfer play the position Sunday…Gutsy call by Mike Nolan to start the second half with an onside kick. Too bad Dilfer spoiled it with a back-breaking INT immediately afterward – Remember, this guy has a Super Bowl ring…Somebody please get a body bag for Shaun Alexander…Is there anyone out there who actually enjoys Tony Siragusa as a commentator?

It’s official – teams with former coaches have an advantage when playing their previous employer…The Matt Leinart, Kurt Warner QB carousel means neither can be used in fantasy leagues…It’s time to stop considering a matchup with Arizona a good one for your fantasy players.

If Selvin Young is available in your fantasy league stop reading this and go change that immediately…As long as he’s healthy, Dallas Clark is a top-5 fantasy tight end…Can’t wait to see what Reggie Wayne does if Marvin Harrison misses some time.

Norv Turner is getting most of the blame, but the Wade Phillips to Ted Cottrell coaching switch on the defensive side of the ball might be the bigger and more important downgrade that was made over the offseason…I’m jealous of anyone who owns Antonio Gates in a fantasy league…Dwayne Bowe is an absolute beast. With every ridiculous play after the catch he makes, I’m less optimistic about JaMarcus Russell’s NFL future…This Kansas City defense is legit.

Osi Umenyiora might as well have been at an amusement park last night, as Winston Justice was a human turnstile. 12 sacks is a pretty good way to combat a subpar secondary…There probably isn’t a bigger high-risk, high-reward fantasy player than Brian Westbrook…If there’s a better red zone target than Plaxico Burress, I can’t think of one…Should be interesting to see what the Giants do with Brandon Jacobs back in the mix. Derrick Ward was awfully good in his stead.

“Can’t wait to see what Reggie Wayne does if Marvin Harrison misses some time.”

Is it possible he might be worse? Teams might be able to key on him a lot more.

It is possible, but I always side with the more opportunities outweighs more coverage view. As a Wayne owner, I’d rather him be the only game in town. But I could be wrong.

Do you drop Leon Wash to add Selvin?

If your using Washington right now (especially in a PPR league) then probably not, but if this is for a bench spot, then ya, I would. I’d say Henry is more likely to get hurt than T. Jones (in fact, Henry’s status for this week is cloudy), and Young and the Denver running game offers far more upside than the Jets’. Plus, I’ve watched Young all year, and the guy is good with the ball in his hands – absolutely huge potential if he becomes the feature back in that system.

Mike Shanahan just said Henry is getting an MRI during his presser. Pick up Young no matter what.

Any chance The Other Adrian Peterson (“TOAP”) gets a bigger role for the Bears? Pillowy soft Benson is probably good for something things, but toting the rock is not one of them. I know he has the contract and all, and god knows Jerry Angelo would rather drink a tray of antifreeze cocktails than admit a mistake (see Grossman, Rex), but at some point, the mighty 3.2 ypc are going to be impossible to mask. I drafted TOAP based on my complete lack of faith in Benson, and also for the possible comic effect of making a trade with someone else who thought I was sending them the Minnesota version, and still think he could matter. That said, I’m at my RB cap (six), and there are a couple of enticing options on the waiver wire this week, such as Selvin and Pittman. I’m wondering if I should make a claim, or stand pat. What are your thoughts, O Wise One?

I can tell you one thing for sure, Triple-D, if you hate the Bears, and god knows I do, there has never been a better time to live in Chicago than right now. I feel like I died and went to heaven. Too bad the Cubs didn’t blow it as well, I would be on cloud nine.

Totally called it on Dwayne Bowe this week.

When’s the last time Robby made a call like that?

    Also: Re Norv Turner
There were so many ways the Chargers could have avoided this coaching staff cotastrophe.
1.Keep Marty, albeit his record in the playoffs is terrible, he’s taken some mediocre teams there time and time again…i.e. Chiefs. Not to mention coming off a 14-2 season, leaving your team with a chance to win, and Kaeding can’t drill the 3 pointer.

    2. Offer the job to Cam Cameron!
    3. Offer the job to Wade Phillips!
    4.Keep Marty!
No way to expect a team with 95% same players and 100% new coaching staff, to maintain any sort of continuity.
Chargers Looked amazing in the first half, with a decent lead, so what do the chargers do in the second half? Go to the air!?!? Even if your Marty’s replacement, doesn’t mean you can’t go with what worked well for him, which was give the ball to LT the entire game, not just the first half.

I know this is a NFL Fantasy blog, but what about that Cal game this weekend? Second best in Cal history behind the 2003 USC game.

Dreamweapon-TOAP will be the the new Marion Barber, obviously the best back on the team, but no carries to show for it. Hopefully TOAP will emerge to prove him self like Marion Barber did.

Also-DDD, RE: Griese, I agree, he needs more time before the judgement is in. 2 of those picks weren’t his fault as they were bobbled by his own receivers. Griese has much better vision than Grossman, and given some time, and A DECENT RUNNING BACK to draw linebackers into the box, could see success.

Dreamweapon – There’s a chance TOAP gets more touches – he should – but I think Chicago management will be stubborn and it’s likely going to to take an injury for Benson to truly lose his job. He was benched for the the final 11 minutes of the 2nd QT Sunday, but Garrett Wolfe is also there to muddle the situation. There’s no doubt in my mind that TOAP would do better, but I fear stubbornness will get in the way…Therefore, I’d rather both Pittman and Selvin.

RobbyHater – I played Robby H2H this week and left Bowe on my bench, and it looks like that was the difference from me winning and not losing. I def. should have listened to you.

The biggest flaw in San Diego’s management wasn’t just the firing of Marty, but then waiting so long to do so and giving themselves few options to choose from late in the game. Just terrible all around and AJ Smith needs to go.

I actually did watch a good chunk of that Cal game – great stuff. I thought for sure they were going to OT. What a strip at the goal line.

Wow, Bowe would’ve given you a .8 win! R-Hater, you’re right, I haven’t made too many good calls just year. Just a few – Addai over Gore, Romo over a handful of other QBs, TO over Wayne and Holt, Edge over some other garbage RBs, Brandon Marshall and Patrick Crayton at the end of the draft, tough year for me so far…

    Yo- couple things:
    — Robby Hater/DDD: I agree with dalton, if they were going to fire marty, they could have done so right away to give themselves a chance to promote from within. Instead of waiting till the whole staff got offered better jobs. I’ve been hating on that decision ever since it happened, and it’s funny because all the radio/newspaper guys here in SD were all supportive of the decision at the time, and everyone jumped on the bandwagon, yet this week at the game there was a ROAR of a Marty chant going on. i hate fuckin uninformed fans that just talk shit for the sake of talking shit. I bull shit with people about football all the time, and eventhough they are fellow chargers fans, sometimes i just want to piss on them. I was touting the team all offseason, thinking even with the terrible coaching moves that the talent would carry the team, but rivers just doesn’t have the experience to take the team on his shoulders. They’ll definitely bounce back, and in a weak division, they may be able to pull atop the afc west, as there’s 3 teams infront of them at 2-2

—Brutal on the Bowe call, I picked him up and didn’t play him also, managed to pull out a win anyway.

    — Whats the deal with Jamarcus Russel? Now that the Raiders look like they have some potential, does he gain any value as a second half monster? or does the raiders success surround culpepper? I know you mentioned that now it looks like bowe was the one making the plays happen at LSU now, but i’m currently working with Jeff Garcia, and am thinking about picking up russell, will he ever see significant snaps this season? Some of the talk says week 7 or 8. There’s a decent receiving core there.

—Dallas New England game: Definite Superbowl preview. There should be nationwide parties, office pools, sick commercials, and some really old rock band at half time.

—and as always thanks to DDD and robby for the hands down best fantasy blog on the net, and believe me I read a lot of them.
i look forward to the day you blow up, and i can say, i’ve been reading those guys forever….. i try to click the ads as much as possible, and so should the rest of you!

Chad – Thanks man, appreciate it. I agree about the Chargers not being out of it. Then again, I also picked them to cover, let alone win this past week. Still, it’s early, and that team is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. I expected Denver to be a little better, so that division is def. winnable still. Rivers needs to step it up tho, and N. Turner needs to keep feeding LT.

I was halfway joking about the Bowe/Russell thing, but if you think about it, he had not one but two WRs at LSU who were taken in the first round of the NFL draft. I hear he’s looked good in practice so far and def. might get an opportunity around weeks 7-9 like you said – depends on if you think Oak can hang around the playoff picture. That said, I don’t like him very much for fantasy purposes this year. First off, almost every single rookie QB struggles. Plus, he’s considered “raw” to begin with and missed the entire preseason. One way a rookie QB can be valuable is if they combat mistakes throwing the ball by running (Vince Young last year), but Russell doesn’t run at all.

Bottom line, anyone else out there on your waiver wire? I’d rather take a flier on J.T. O’Sullivan. When (not if) Jon Kitna goes down, he’ll be the one throwing the ball 60 times a game and won’t be able to avoid being a fantasy asset.
