Monday Morning Quarterback

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

Vince Young is going to be the quarterback everyone thought Michael Vick was going to be.

Tony Dungy deserves severe criticism and not just for the timeout that effectively cost him the game Sunday. Seniority has no place in the NFL; it’s all fun and games wasting carries on Dominic Rhodes while undefeated, but you might want to get your best players on the field at some point. I’m officially rooting for San Diego to get home field advantage.

Is Steven Jackson really going to catch 100 balls this year?!

I still think going to Jay Cutler was the right move long-term, but it admittedly cost them the game Sunday night.

If Fred Taylor weren’t in the picture, Maurice Jones-Drew would be worthy of a first-round fantasy pick next year.

It’s Déjà Vu all over again for Lovie Smith, and I don’t mean that awful ABC show – Rex Grossman is the new Kyle Orton.

There’s a chance the Jets don’t lose again during the regular season.

Courtesy of Captain Obvious – Brett Favre is done.

Is NFL football the only profession where Matt Millen would still have his job? Remember, he also had zero qualifications and experience when hired.

As if things couldn’t get any more frustrating: Edgerrin James finally has his first 100-yard rushing game of the season but loses three goal line touchdowns to Marcel freakin Shipp.

Sean Payton is doing a great job, but Jeff Fisher is easily Coach of the Year.

There hasn’t been a more ludicrous play-call than Mike Shanahan’s decision to have Jason Elam run for two yards on Fourth and One. The result – a predictably strained hamstring and a field goal attempt two yards shorter.

Oakland’s pass defense is the most underrated aspect of this NFL season.

The spike is overused. Calling a play no-huddle literally takes five seconds, and the more unsettled the defense, the better.

In case you were wondering, Sebastian Janikowski was taken in the first-round of the NFL draft.

Even Jenna Jameson is jealous of the choke job done by USC this weekend.

The “drop” statistic in football should be treated like errors in baseball and not taken seriously – it’s completely arbitrary and more often than not, credited far too infrequently.

If you’re counting at home, I’m 11-2 over the last two weeks against the spread in the Game Caps.

This is pretty funny.

    Nice work with Jenna.

Two weeks in a row, Nolan has me up in arms. Can someone please explain to me why the 49ers didn’t pound the ball against the Saints? They came up with a great gameplan to frustrate Brees, but they decide to almost exclusively throw the ball on 1st down? Yeah, sure, they put 8 men in the box, you’re still a running team, and the only time you’ve ever been succesful throwing the ball is after the run has been established. The one long pass to Bryant came on the drive where they had their one decent stretch of running, and I don’t think that was coincidence. That was just very, very frustrating as a 49ers fan (and Gore owner!).

I started to worry when I saw that the Rams were playing the Bears this week (not good for Bulger and Holt), then was ecstatic to realize I had earned the bye (I lost, thanks to Gore, Addai and Branch getting no love, but so did my competition). Then, I look at the week after, and see the Rams are playing Oakland. The way the Oakland secondary is playing, I think I honestly would rather play Chicago. Besides, I figure at least one of Grossman’s 3 picks would set them up in the red zone.

Speaking of Grossman, comparing him to Orton is insulting. To Orton, I mean. He only threw 13 pics, whereas Grossman is up to 17 (in 3 fewer attempts, mind you). I just don’t understand why Grossman gets so much slack, when it’s clear that the Bears would probably be Super Bowl favorites if they had a Trent Dilfer-esque QB like the Ravens did when they won. To justify his job by highlighting their record is absurd. It’s amazing that they have been able to win in spite of him, just amazing. They have two wins, that no team in history even had a right to be competitive in.

Can you believe the Texans beat the Raiders without even completing a pass in the 2nd half? That blows my mind.

Between watching Shipp steal those TD’s from Edge when Edge finally has a good game (I started him), to watching Tatum look like he’s come back to life (I sat him), to seeing Maroney go down on the 2nd series (started him), to watching Dayne take the load from Lundy (whom I started), to Addai and Gore getting neglected by their insane coaches, it was possibly my worst week of the year…but somehow every other team I need to lose, did, so I clinched a #1 seed with one team, and backed into the last spot with another…sometimes, it is better to be lucky than good!

I hope Monte gets his vision back sometime soon! (I’m pretending the Spurs game didn’t happen)

I agree, SF was in that game more than the scoreboard showed – they did a great job on Brees too, and I have no clue why Gore wasn’t featured much, much more.

How much did Maroney screw us both yet again? He’s been such a disappointment for me. At least with Addai I can blame the coaching.

I agree w/ you on Oakland’s pass D. I have Palmer this week, and am really worried about the matchup….Agreed about Grossman too – It’s especially insulting to hear Lovie Smith point to their record when he yanked Orton last year in the same exact situation.

That Texans/Raiders game was unreal. You realize Houston had MINUS 5 yards net passing, right?!

In our main league, I made the playoffs (I had to win this week), but Addai, Maroney, and Coles made it tough – the Bears D has carried me this year.

The Bears D is carrying a lot of people, especially if their special teams are counted! It’s scary to think that they’d be even better if their offense didn’t turn the ball over so much. With 2 above-average RB’s, don’t you think they’d be pounding the ball some more?

After backing in to the playoffs, I now have the unenviable task of going up against LJ. Fortunately he has Kevin Jones against Min, so I hope they shut him down in the run (though he should catch a lot of passes). I’m inclined to start Edge against Seattle, since this is my yardage-heavy league, and he’s actually ran well when given the ball lately. After that, I figure it’s between Tatum@SD and J.Jones vs. NO. I like the matchup against the Saints better, especially after their run-stopper got suspended, but I’ve just got no faith in Jones now. Caddy and Benson are going to stay glued to my bench, and I don’t really like Maroney’s matchup against MIA, even if he is healthy. I think I’m going to need big games from Vick, TO and Boldin to pull this one off.

Those special teams TDs do count for my Bears D….We’ll get the lineup rankings out later today Keith, but those are some tough choices at RB you have. At least LJ faces Balt, that certainly helps. K. Jones has been unreal catching the ball this season, so has S-Jax, who I have to face this week….TO is going to have a huge game, don’t worry about that.
