Hmm it may be difficult to tell stories that haven’t already been told when you’re working within a framework of reconfigured concepts – but that’s business. I’m not sure that precludes investment in concepts with originality, like Inception or even Avatar (which was just Pocahontas retold, but at least repackaged as original). Instead, risk and cost are minimized and profit goes up – again, that’s business.

Donald – I’ve heard mixed reviews about the original version. I heard it was way more over the top. Yet others, like you, swear it’s better than the American one. But I’ll have to decide for myself. I’ve mostly heard really good things about the girl actress though.

Nat – Good catch about Cuaron. Yates was also good, I agree.

No argument here as far as depth when it comes to Dragon Tattoo (and even No Country too), nor about Rooney Mara.

I want to see Midnight in Paris but never had much interest in Hugo. Sounds like you think I should check it out tho. No way it’s better than Gangs of New York though (I kid).

Interesting read on your link, but isn’t this also happening simply because with time, it becomes harder and harder to come up with ideas that haven’t already been told?? (Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand all these sequels).

I highly recommend the original three versions of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Me and my wife had watched them just a few weeks before we knew there was going to be an american version. We really liked the American version, but actually thought that the foreign version was even better (we watched the dubber versions). I also liked the girl (Noomi Rapace) better than Rooney Mara.

Great lists Dalton. Cant really comment on any of your movie picks, other than Moneyball being…um not so authentic. Still, one of the better sports movies I’ve seen. Obviously your missing Archer on your TV list. I would of thrown Raising Hope and Wilfred on there too. And I think Louie is good. Not great. The hour long episode where he goes to Afghanistan was soo boring and corny.

Potter 3 was Cuaron, 4 was Mike Newell who I’m never stylistically impressed by, though I did enjoy the Goblet of Fire. If anyone emerged from the series as a powerhouse, it was David Yates who directed the last 4 installments. Impressive for a relative newcomer to big screen productions.

Dragon Tattoo was flawlessly produced, but I left with the same feeling when I watched No Country for Old Men — brilliant film arranged by technical masters and uber-talent, but just didn’t quite go anywhere beyond itself, and the elaborate ending was rushed beyond reasonability. Rooney Mara however…

I thought Midnight in Paris and Hugo were the respective directors’ best in quite some time.

Odd thing I just learned: Jim Rash, the actor who plays Dean Pelton on *Community,* cowrote the screenplay for *The Descendants* (which was a letdown for me, as I expected it to be a movie about Milo Aukerman and Co.). So you still sorta got some *Community* in ya.

Your music list needs more Dum Dum Girls, Wild Flag and Destroyer.

Obviously disagree with best movie. Terrence Malick walks Fincher to school every morning and hands him off his little sack lunch with apple sauce…. I watched the only season of John from Cincinnati twice again last year but that doesn’t count so I agree with Louie as well, that guy is high art. Also agree with Bon Iver, its one of those albums I get really mad when they start playing any songs on the radio, like you guys just can’t put that on in the middle of the day while i’m going about my business. I can’t start crying in the middle of the supermarket again “aaaaaand I was not magnificent….”…. Payne – Yeah Entourage was pretty bad (and I actually liked the season prior, taking Vince into a dark place). The finale was laughable, as they had that girl go from refusing to grab a cup of coffee with him to marrying him in five seconds. It was clear they didn’t want to take any risks because a movie is in the works.

I need to check out more Fitz and the Tantrums.
