The Scoop

I’m targeting Jay Bruce this year. After hitting just .223 last season, some luster appears to have worn off. He won’t come dirt cheap or anything, but right now his ADP is 121.62 – making him the 38th outfielder off the board, behind guys like Jason Kubel, Michael Cuddyer and even Carlos Beltran. Of course, all leagues vary, and I doubt he’ll come at such a discount in any I play in, but the point remains – few players typically available after round seven offer Bruce’s upside; the kind that can win your league for you. There’s no doubt he strikes out too often and still struggles against lefties, but this is also a 22-year-old who has smashed 43 homers over 209 career games in the majors. His walk rate improved last season, and while it’s never great betting on someone coming off a wrist injury (which suppressed his numbers in 2009), Bruce posted a 1.228 OPS after returning in September. That was during only 14 games, but there’s little reason to worry about his health entering 2010. Although he hasn’t been successful on the base paths so far in the majors, he’s also capable of swiping 15-20 bags. Part of his low .221 BABIP last year can be attributed to all those batted balls leaving the yard, and since he strikes out so frequently, BA remains a risk, but it’s also worth noting that his BABIP was 24 points below the lowest among all qualified hitters last year (Ian Kinsler had a .245 BABIP). Bruce has the ability to reach 40 homers – and as soon as this season.

Interesting read regarding Dusty Baker and his propensity to destroy the arms (and sometimes careers) of his starting pitchers. Some pretty damning evidence.

I’m not going to act like I’m the first person to suggest avoiding Javier Vazquez this year. I mean, it’s pretty obvious the move from the NL back to the AL is a detriment to his fantasy value. You also won’t find a bigger fan of his, as I had him No. 2 on my NL Cy Young ballot for 2009 (it’s an absolute joke how much negativity Keith Law got for having him on his ballot, since, you know, he was 100 percent right). Vazquez is a terrific pitcher (in fact, his 2.89 xFIP led all of baseball last season) and was a huge pickup for the Yankees. He’s going to be a big asset in strikeouts and also probably in WHIP and wins. He’s certainly going to have plenty of value in fantasy leagues. It’s just that an ERA less than 4.00 (or even 4.50) might be too much to ask. Bill James, CHONE and Marcel all call for it to be less than 3.85, but I’m not so optimistic. You see, Vazquez is an extreme flyball pitcher (last season’s 41.7 GB% ranked 50th among starters, and that was for only those who qualified), and he’s now playing in the best home run park in baseball (at least based on one year’s worth of data. Obviously, that’s not quite sufficient. But it’s all we have to work with for now). So while contrary to popular belief, the new Yankee Stadium played as a pitcher’s park last year, it’s extremely susceptible to giving up the long ball, making Vazquez a poor match. And that’s before accounting for the fact he’ll now have to face much tougher lineups in his division. Again, Vazquez is a terrific pitcher who is as durable as they come and was a great addition to the Yankees rotation, but during his previous four seasons in the American League, his ERA was less than 4.67 once. His current ADP (12th SP) is simply too high.

Words cannot describe this video. I usually don’t link to ones this long (11 minutes), but this is pure gold (and the finale doesn’t disappoint, so be sure to watch until the very end). The word “surreal” is often overused, but I can’t think of a better description here. While a bunch of sabermetrics are being discussed, Royals GM Dayton Moore uses “runs scored” as his preferred method of evaluation, and when he’s really feeling crazy, he’ll even sometimes delve into “on-base percentage.” You can’t make this stuff up. Justin Upton is really on the cutting edge as well. And I haven’t even gotten into the random interludes by the “hot blonde,” who is there for, well, I have no idea why. Is she really Jim Bowden’s girlfriend? My mind has truly been blown.

Howie Kendrick isn’t assured of even a starting job, has had durability issues, rarely walks and has limited power and speed, yet I still want him on my fantasy team in 2010. While there will be a battle for the second base job, and it would be nice if he walked every now and then, Kendrick should beat out Maicer Izturis (who could also get at-bats at third base) if he plays up to his potential. Kendrick has a .360 BA throughout his minor league career (1,618 ABs), and he posted a .358/.391/.558 line after the All-Star break with the Angels last year. A 20/20 type campaign isn’t out of the question, and there’s no doubt in my mind Kendrick can win a batting title someday, which would actually be an even bigger boost to your fantasy team’s BA since it would come with few walks.

Speaking of the Angels, I’m picking them to win the AL West this season. I’m all about being a contrarian, and in this rare case, backing the team that has won the division five out of the last six years qualifies as such. PECOTA calls for Texas to win the AL West, with the Angels finishing in last. CAIRO says the Mariners win the division, with the Angels finishing third. CHONE is also predicting the Rangers to finish in first. All random commentary I’ve come across seems to agree as much – the Angels are done. It’s true this team seems to have been rather lucky over the past three years, and this division is one of the hardest to predict entering 2010, and I actually don’t really like Mike Scioscia as a tactician, but I also don’t see many holes in this Angels squad. If anyone wants to pick another AL West team to finish higher than the Angels, I’d love to bet backstage. Let me know.

Alexei Ramirez is an interesting case, as he saw his home runs drop (21 to 15) in 2009 compared to 2008 despite getting 62 more at-bats and more experience. His OPS also declined from .792 to .723 during that span, and while a simple explanation would be that pitchers had a book on him finally, it’s worth noting his K rate dropped while his walk rate jumped significantly, so optimism remains for the 28-year-old, despite his second half collapse (.684 OPS) last season. His success on the base paths also improved in 2009 (74 percent) compared to 2008 (59 percent). Ramirez may never become a truly valuable asset for the White Sox, but he plays in one of the most favorable hitter’s parks in baseball, could easily approach 20/20 this year and qualifies at one of the shallowest positions in baseball, making him plenty valuable in fantasy leagues.

Not that I dislike Tony Kornheiser on PTI, but I wouldn’t mind his two-week suspension lasting longer – Dan Le Batard absolutely blows him and Michael Wilbon away. Not even close.

So my boy Stephen Strasburg has impressed during early bullpen sessions, to say the least. Pudge Rodriguez has already dismissed Justin Verlander comparisons, instead opting for Nolan Ryan. Strasburg reportedly has also taken to the community, rescuing stray kittens in his spare time, and reputedly, he’s also discovered the cure for the common cold, found a piece of evidence that will rightfully get Amanda Knox exonerated and was the driving force behind Soundgarden reuniting. Don’t expect him to pitch for the Nationals until June, but he’ll still be worth a second round fantasy pick nevertheless (OK, that last part was a bit of an exaggeration).

Great stuff DDD – as always

Thank you for the link to the Dusty Baker article. What are some glaring examples of this practice while he was managing the Giants? Certainly remember it with Prior and Wood – evidence also with Volquez, Cueto and Harang. Wonder what shape Lincecum would be in now with Baker as manager and Bochy as the pitching coach (especially in 2008).

The Fox Sports video link was also greatly appreciated. Exactly how does Jim Bowden become an authority on how to run a baseball team? Ya, ripping off teenagers and making some of the worst trades in modern history should absolutely be rewarded. It’s just like putting Steve Phillips on ESPN or letting Eliot Spitzer appear on Bill Maher (my favorite show) and write for Slate (although he isn’t terrible).

Don’t forget…Alexei Ramirez is actually 37 and Stephen Strasburg could BEAT Chuck Norris’ ass.

I’ve gotta say DDD, your links in this entry were top notch. I can’t say I enjoyed watching that 11 minute “sabrmetrics” video, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading every other article you linked.

I’m targeting Jay Bruce as well this season. I can tell you that with absolutely no worries since the only league we are in together one of the new guys has Jay Bruce already–at $15 going into his option year. Here’s a question for you DDD: if you had Jay Bruce at $15 going into his option year in our league would you extend his contract a year or two. bumping his salary up to $20 or even $25? As much as I like Jay Bruce for this season I’m pretty sure that if I had him at $15 I’d just keep him at that salary for one more season and let him go. What do you think?

I’ve always disliked players who won’t take walks. Two of my favorite whipping boys in recent years are Juan Pierre and Garrett Anderson. That said, I really like Howie Kendrick and still believe in him as well although I just can’t see him winning a batting title anytime soon. His lifetime K/BB ratio is 234 to 50. Has anybody ever won a batting title with a 4.68 to 1 K/BB ratio? I’d be shocked if anybody has. His strike zone judgment is improving but last year his K/BB ratio was still only 71 to 20. Has anybody ever won a batting title with a 3.55 to 1 K/BB ratio? I think somebody may have, but I have no idea who. Clemente or Puckett maybe?

Hell, I’ll check out BaseballReference.com real quick. Clemente won four batting titles. His worst K/BB ratio in any of those seasons was 103 to 41 (2.51 to 1) in 1967–when he hit a career high .357! Man I would have loved to have seen this man play! He passed away the year before I discovered baseball much to my dismay. Puckett actually won only one batting title, hitting .339 in 1989 with a thoroughly respectable 59 to 41 ratio. Now he did hit .356 in 1988 (Wade Boggs won the batting title) with a 83 to 23 (3.61 to 1) ratio. So I guess 3.55 can be done–but 4.68 cannot. I guess my point is I can’t really see Howie winning a batting title until he gets his K/BB ratio under 3 to 1. Here’s to hoping he does it this year.

Now that I got the negative out of the way, I reiterate that I still like Howie Kendrick and still believe in him. I am an Angels fan, and have watched him play for the past four years. He is far from a perfect player but when he is on his game his natural talent for making hard and quick contact with a pitched ball really shines to the point where you can see he could be something special. Ever since I saw him play in the Arizona Fall League in 2005 I’ve noticed how extraordinarily quick Kendrick’s wrist are. I seldom notice this about any player, but it’s hard not to notice this about Howie. Until last season injuries always got in the way. His career high in games played was 92 (think about that, 92!) going into last season. As you well know last season he played in only 105 games because he was sent to the minors mid-season, not because of injuries. I think he’s finally figured out how to keep himself healthy enough to play, and if he has I expect his performance to rise to potential all-star level. I don’t see him winning the batting title in 2010, but if he just stays healthy I fully expect him to hit around .320 with power. I guess we’ll see. God, I can’t wait for baseball season!

Once again I thank you DDD for writing so beautifully about something we both care so much about. It’s a pleasure reading your blog.

few DVDs I feel the need to recommend:
Black Dynamite — maybe the funniest satire ever made
Dead Snow — almost as fun as Zombieland; watch it w/ English dub turned on
Moon — flew under my radar, but damn good sci-fi

The end of the video was merely the icing on the cake. Great link.

Not that I will draft him, but I think Stasburg is very interesting. If Verlander averages 95 on his fastball, and this kid can average 97 (or higher?), given his command and secondary pitches, why couldn’t he just step in and be great from the get-go? There aren’t many players who have the potential to outperform their adp by such a wide margin this year. I think we can agree that stats from the Arizona Fall League do not carry much weight, but what would we be thinking right now if Strasburg had done in the afl what Liriano had done in the Dominican? We would all be believers.

What exactly is wrong with Spitzer, jackjester? He took it to asshole no-account corporations as AG in both the state and federal courts like a friggin’ demon. The man was a latter-day Robin Hood as far as I’m concerned, why on Earth would anyone care if he got his pole wet on the side, as long as the other party was consenting and of age? What are you, an Evangelical deacon or something? Standard-issue infidelity couldn’t be less interesting or important. LOL, I lived in Illinois during the Blago saga–if you want a legitimate reason to hate a politician, go read up on that. If you weigh Spitzer’s societal contributions on any sort of objective scale, he comes out so far ahead, by so many orders of magnitude, that it’s not even funny. He was also extremely prescient–we’re talking about a motherfucker who was suing AIG for securities and insurance fraud and deceptive business practices FIVE YEARS AGO. If only people had listened. It’s really hard for me to imagine anyone other than a Rush Limbaugh fan or some church-going prude actually hating on this guy.

    Hey DW,

I don’t have any problem with with Spitzer or Phillips because of infidelity. The comparison was meant to be subtle – mostly pointed at Spitzer’s platform on Bill Maher’s show. And with Phillips, not only was he a terrible GM, but his analysis on ESPN made me want to vomit. The fact that he was fired for an affair made me happy, but only because it meant I never had to watch him again. I was just pointing out that he was another terrible GM, like Bowden, viewed as an expert.

Your assumptions are little extreme, but thank you for your concern.

jackjester – Jason Schmidt (although to be fair, Felipe Alou abused him as well). But ya, Schmidt was overworked under Baker. Russ Ortiz to an extent too. And don’t ever mention Baker and Lincecum in the same sentence. That is scary.

Agreed about Jim Bowden (and that campiness can’t help his credibility) as well as Bill Maher (love his show).

Good point about A. Ramirez – he very well could be 5-10 years older than listed. Worth considering. And Strasburg would definitely beat Norris’ ass.

Oh, and don’t let Dreamweapon get to you. Your comment was funny and added to the article. Keep em coming.

Poincare – Glad you liked the links. I thought they were worthwhile too.

That’s a great question about Bruce. I’m such a believer, I’d probably extend him one year at $20. But it’s risky going more than that, and I could see letting him play out at $15. I’m made some mistakes extending contracts in keeper leagues before.

EXCELLENT analysis on K:BB rates regarding BA. Really good stuff. It will also be especially tough to win a BA title in the current AL, with Ichiro there and also Mauer, who takes a bunch of walks and won’t get nearly the at-bats since he plays catcher – meaning it’s easier to have a high BA in 500 ABs than 650 ABs.

Well jack, sorry for kicking sand in your vag, but your subtlety didn’t come across (I’m conceding for the sake of comity that it in fact existed in the first place)–devoid of any context, you compared an extremely competent individual, who was not only good but exceptional at his job, and compared him on a blanket basis to two guys who are self-evidently morons in any professional capacity. I’m sorry, I don’t get the comparison, and as long as we’re talking about assumptions, your assumption that anyone has actually seen a singular particular episode of a less-than-popular show on a premium cable channel is pretty far out there. I honestly didn’t care about the remark and was just jokingly looking for an explanation and an opportunity for some small debate (it doesn’t even matter to me if you WERE an evangelical–my own mother is, FWIW, and I hardly despise her, whatever you may think–I can still take ppl on their own merits), but if you’re going to get all defensive and butt-hurt about it and brazenly attempt to portray me as a troll, well, then, maybe I’ll have to re-evaluate.

DDD–Spitzer was an enormously effective AG. We have no way of knowing how he would’ve panned out as governor because he didn’t have enough time in office, but it’s reasonable to assume he would’ve been one of the best (considering that the vast majority of politicians are lawyers anyway so it was hardly some massive leap–obviously there are different approaches you have to take due to the demands and expectations of the respective offices, but many good AGs have become good governors, it’s a pretty standard career progression). Frankly he was far more effective than the nutters (Ashcroft) and lap dogs (Gonzales) appointed to the US AG post during his run as far policing corporate malfeasance, and much of the rest of the country actually looked to his office with the Bush administration having completely abdicated their responsibilities on that front. Holder is solid so there’s finally a sheriff back at the national post, but Spitzer getting back into the game can only be a good thing for the people of this country–well, those who can be bothered to press the “mute” buttons on their remotes for a ten-minute stint, anyway.

Another Keith? I don’t approve at all.

I took Strasburg in the first round of my keeper league draft; we have 12 teams and 10 keepers, so I basically drafted him as the equivalent of the 125th player or something, and the other owners thought I reached. I was really surprised…I don’t think someone of his talent level comes along very often, and I would have been pissed if someone else drafted him before me. I didn’t have real ADP value or anything to go on, but I couldn’t imagine anyone in the entire remaining player pool with a higher ceiling.

By the way, D3, don’t pull the age/married card in regards to seats at concerts…that’s just sad.

The previews for Black Dynamite have been killing me…definitely atop the que now. Just saw Zombieland and really liked it. Fell asleep watching Moon, but that’s not really a reflection on the movie…looked really interesting, and I’ll definitely give it another go.

I feel like Ben Sheets is being undervalued this year. Sure, I wouldn’t predict 200 innings, but I think Oakland’s defense and park means that when he’s on the mound, he’s basically guaranteed to be effective.

Great write up and links Dalton.

Gotta ask though, is there anything in particular that has sold you on the Angels winning the west? To me they look like they could use some depth all over, especially in the pitching department. I’d also expect to see last seasons breakout guys regress. I’m 100% + Abreu, Hunter, Morales, Aybar, Icturez and Rivera wont mach their 09 production. Plus, replacing Figgins with Brandon Wood, is a huge downgrade. They’re on the decline for sure, and I would bet that they wont hold off the rest of the pack.

On Alexi Ramirez, you forgot to mention how badly he sucked to start last season. He could be a bargain, compared to where that middle tier of SS get drafted.

Also wondering what you thought of the new Beach House album. Thnks

Robby – I’ve heard similar things about the new Rambo from Nick Barrett.

Funny, I used to dislike Le Batard. Now I pretty much love him. Awesome writer. And the whole “bam” thing at the beginning of PTI is a little silly (although he mostly does this to get under Wilbon’s skin), we’ll definitely have to agree to disagree here. Sorry, but “knowing very little” doesn’t cut it for me on a show where two people are talking about sports, no matter how “entertaining” they are.

Recent argument on the show: who would you rather have take the final shot of an NBA game, Kobe or LeBron? Wilbon was adamant about Kobe – Le Batard’s take: look at the numbers, LeBron (over the past few years) has taken FEWER shots during “clutch situations” and yet made MORE of them. (All advanced statistics back up LeBron being far more clutch), so he said this is “inarguable.” Wilbon said screw stats! Ugh. This is just one recent example of Le Batard dominating in nearly every argument, b/c, he’s decided to go ahead and join the rest of us in the 21st century, unlike WIlbon and Kornheiser, who still don’t even know what OPS is.

I’m all for difference in opinion (you saying you’d reverse my top-four best movies this year, I had no problem with), but frankly, your view here saddens me.

And as for his humor, listen to the first 30 secs of this podcast below and tell me he’s not funny.

You know your format far better than me, but at least on the outside, Strasburg there kind of seems like a no-brainer. At least not a reach, that’s for sure. Of course, pitchers are risks, but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I was only half-joking with the age/married thing regarding the floor at concerts. Frankly, I’d rather have seats. Maybe it’s because I make too many trips to the bar and don’t want the hassle of getting back to the front/with my friends.

Oakland’s outfield defense could be better than Seattle’s this season.

  21. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Matt – I hear you regarding the Angels. I really do. They also lost Lackey and Vladdy too. But here goes: Hunter missed 43 games last year, Matsui should be a decent replacement at DH, Howie Kendrick could prove quite valuable, meaning Izturis is a utility man (he could start for half the teams in baseball), Brandon Wood could also finally reach his potential, but if not, there’s Izturis as a backup plan, Shields’ return should bolster the bullpen, what if E. Santana is back to health? If Napoli truly did improve his defense, they could have a catcher who hits 25-30 homers. And Pineiro is their 5th starter right now – although they have few options past that, that’s a fairly deep SP group if healthy. Kazmir still possesses upside.

But here’s the thing: I don’t really think the Angels are that good. On the decline for sure. And your point about more than a couple players def. due for regression in 2010 is a good one that I agree with. So put differently, I think they are the team with the LEAST FLAWS in the AL West. But with four all grouped so closely, anything can happen. It will likely come down to who stays healthiest, luck, etc. A truly up in the air division. I just think L.A. is getting written off a bit prematurely when I don’t see one glaring weakness on the team.

Haven’t heard the new Beach House album. Will check it out this weekend for sure now tho. Thanks for the rec.

I definitely think the AL West is up for grabs, and that health will probably be the biggest factor. If Vlad/Hamilton/Harden stay healthy for Texas, they could be really good. Bedard could be huge for the M’s down the stretch. The Angels lost a lot of depth. Hell, if Sheets is reasonably healthy, Brett Anderson pitches like he did in the 2nd half and somebody produces on offense (I won’t even mention the corpse of Eric Chavez), the A’s could be in the thick of it. I expect a close race.

Flip a coin regarding Morgan vs. Davis. For some reason, I feel like Morgan might have slightly better job security (A’s have pretty good OF depth, and Morgan’s defense is outstanding. Plus, the team traded Milledge for him).

Sleeper relievers: Brandon League, Jason Motte, Dan Runzler, Joey Devine and Drew Storen.
