I hear you. No need to lose any sleep over it. I just found it particularly amazing that he wasn't dissing some newer metric. He was basically criticizing the importance of defense altogether.

Please don't get too upset by anything Ron Borges writes about baseball. He has as many credentials as you or I do on the subject: he's been a fan for a really long time. I've heard him on the radio before say that W-L record is the best measure of a pitcher's performance. Is it any surprise, let alone something worth getting angry about, that a person who believes this can't comprehend the philosophy behind advanced metrics?

Poincare - Very well said. And I have def. gotten into similar arguments, where others point to stats as if they aren't objective and worthwhile.

It makes me sick reading articles like Borges's. It reminds just how downright stupid people can be when ranting on about their own illogical prejudices. I really like your point about how he seems to be basking in his own ignorance of UZR, as if that is some badge of honor. He attempts to appear as if he's examining all the issues point by point in search of the truth when it's beyond obvious to anybody paying attention that he started his "fact-finding" with a conclusion already in mind and intends to twist every point in some way so that it supports his desired conclusion--whether his argument actually makes logical sense or not.

I still remember getting into an argument with some guy in a sports bar in which he actually said to me as I was presenting FACTS in support of my position,"...you're just looking at the statistics..."--as if pointing out simple facts that Derek Jeter hit .150 in a playoff series in Minnesota the previous year cannot possibly be a legitimate way to argue a point. Reading this article reminds me of that guy; that is not a good thing.

One thing I found very heartening was more that one of the comments under the article contained readers calling Borges out for the complete fool he is. It's good to see other people can see through this BS also.
