Speaking of Sabean, if i set the over/under for combined homeruns from DeRosa and Huff at 30, would you take the over or the under? I'd take the under and feel pretty good about it. It's hard to be an A's fan, but it must be devastating to be a Giants fan.

It's a valid question, since he swings at pitches outside the strikezone more than any other hitter in baseball these days. His walks went up over the second half last year tho, so he's improving somewhat. But yes, I'll say he hits over .300 yet again in 2010 (of course, OBP is far more important to the Giants, even if Sabean doesn't realize it).

This is definitely a season where I'd take VMart or Mauer early. Even if they only hit 20 HR's, the fact that they get 550+ AB's each year due to playing DH and 1B on offdays means they score 90+ Runs and with these guys 100+ RBI's.

The 5th best Catcher will score 60 Runs and have 70 RBI. That is a big difference, now consider what the #12 Catcher will have at those positions and I can see a reason to take Mauer or VMart over a 2nd round 1B or OF.

Both of these guys should hit .300+ with 20 HR 90 R 100 RBI

Donald - That's a fair question, and to be honest, one I'm asking myself. I've been toying with the idea and wanted to see how my team would shake out if I did take the plunge that early. Not only is Mauer due for a decline in power, but he's also an injury risk (all players are to an extent, but catchers more so, plus he's dealt with health problems throughout his career). That said, I've never seen a position so thin in any fantasy sport as catcher this year. There's three and then nothing (maybe a gamble on Wieters at four). Of course, there's also M. Montero, and others will probably bounce back like Soto and R. Martin, and others will come out of nowhere. And taking a guy like Mauer is almost like taking a tight end early in football - sure, he may be far better than the rest of his position, but his upside with his own stats is somewhat limited.

That said, he could also win the batting title again and is probably one of the better pure hitters in the game. He can DH some, and would it be shocking if some power remained based on his frame and age? (I do hear you about his HRs barely leaving the fence, plus most were opposite field).

Maybe taking one of the many stud 1B options is the way to go. I'm open for debate. Basically, I guess it comes down to a Mauer/Helton vs. Cabrera/Napoli comparison.

wow, 11 comments on this one. I guess everyone is jonesing for baseball.

Seriously, would you actually grab Mauer that early, if this was a real league? I had him last year and watched too much of him... an inordinant amount of him homers were in the first row of left-center. Seriously, they cleared the fence by about a foot. He is good for maybe 20, but no more. BA aside, I can't see him being worth a first or second rounder when people are grabbing a Prince Fielder or Longoria.

Talkin baseball baby!

Jewru - Ya Halladay deserves second round consideration as far as I'm concerned.

I was one pick away from J. Johnson when he was stolen right before me. I do love Nolasco, but Billingsley has quite a bit of upside as well.

Corey - Ya I wouldn't feel comfortable taking Reynolds in the second round. I doubt he'll be on many of my teams this year.

I'd much rather Reyes than Reynolds. But the health of his legs are obviously crucial. Hopefully we'll have a better idea of his true health soon.

Good point about Brian Roberts. Shows he never fails to return value.

You're no challenge.

I am Jack - I actually like targeting Chipper this year. He's never been this cheap. I doubt he's truly done at 38. He's one season removed from posting a 1.044 OPS, and his plate discipline remained intact last year. Sure, he's an injury risk, but he can be plenty valuable if he bounces back in 130 games (in leagues where acceptable replacements are available. It's trickier in NL-only formats). I'll write more about him later.

Funny you mention Beltre - I really like him this year too. Was close to grabbing him.

Halladay in the 4th is a steal. Surprised you took Billingsley over your boy Nolasco.

Love the Morgan pick. Stud in the making.

Phil you better pad up your vag and join the scopp league son.

A few thoughts:

1. Reynolds in Round 2 already feels like that pick where i call last season a fluke, avoid him unless he takes a major fall, and then watch him light it up again this year. Thoughts?

2. It's crazy seeing Reyes that low, but in all honesty I wouldn't touch him even that early. I'm not totally sold on Citi Field being a complete power vortex, but if there's even a kernel of truth to it we're probably hoping for a 15 homerun season, getting a 10 homerun season and that's IF he can stay on the field. Also, after last year, i cant see the Mets giving him carte blanche on swiping bags. I could be talked into it, i suppose, but i'd rather my second round pick not be abjectly terrifying.

3. Has anyone ever gone in the third round for more consecutive years than Brian Roberts? I remember him going right behind Terry Pendleton in my '91 draft (ed. note: too lazy to actually figure out where Terry Pendleton would have been drafted in 1991 for the purposes of this joke).

4. Love Pablo in Rd. 3

5. Probably shouldn't be divulging this information in advance of our draft which i will inevitably bungle and watch my team flame out to a 3rd consecutive 11th place finish.

6. Droppin' Loads is coming for you.

Haha. I'm not necessarily big on Weeks this year, but he was pretty good before his injury last season, and I needed a MI at that time and few (if any) legit options remained. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

At one point there were eight straight closers taken in this draft - I've never seen a run like that before. Also, the Beltran news came out when we were in the middle rounds.
