Bet on It

By Dalton Del Don

Last week I went 11-5, finally finding some success. My season record now stands at a more palatable 102-104-2. My best bet (the Skins) won easily, bringing me to 6-7-1 there overall. Let’s see if I can keep it up:

COLTS -3 at Jaguars

COWBOYS +7.5 at Saints

Bears +11 at RAVENS

PATRIOTS -7 at Buffalo

Cardinals -12 at LIONS

Browns +1.5 at CHIEFS (Best Bet)

Falcons +6 at JETS

49ers +9 at Eagles

Texans -12.5 at RAMS

DOLPHINS +4 at Titans

Raiders +14 at BRONCOS

Bengals +6.5 at CHARGERS

Packers +1 at STEELERS

BUCCANEERS +6.5 at Seahawks

Vikings -9 at PANTHERS

Giants -3 at REDSKINS

Comments: No best bet jumped out at me this week, but I’m going with the Chiefs. Arrowhead is never an easy place to play in December, and this line suggests Cleveland is the better team, which isn’t necessarily true despite how both have played recently. The return of Dwayne Bowe should boost a sagging KC offense, and Jamaal Charles should have a big game against a poor Browns’ defense.

So how on Earth does that trade make any sense at all for the Braves? Is Melky Cabrera really anything more than a C- regular in the big leagues? If so, I’ve never seen a glimpse of it. Given the Mets’ supernatural talent for self-destruction, I guess we may as well go ahead and crown the Phillies NL East champs by acclamation.

Money. That’s it. Nothing more to it. I guess Vizcaino is a pretty legit prospect, but Melky (or McLouth) as a corner outfielder? Ugh. And I love me some Javy too. I guess they couldn’t dump Lowe. Braves were truly in position to make a deep run this year. Now, not so much.

Honestly, I’m starting to really have a problem with baseball b/c of the Yankees (and to a lesser extent, Boston). And normally I’ve never complained about it. But this is getting ridiculous.

I couldn’t agree more, the ship is sinking. And the common refrain, “oh, but the Twins are competitive” doesn’t do shit for me. The Twins haven’t won a title in almost two decades and have little hope of doing so once they lock in Mauer and max out their budget, hamstringing themselves from bringing in the extra 3 or 4 quality role players they’d probably need to put them over the top. And they’re the “best” run of the small and mid-markets? So, what, our best case scenario on a yearly basis is an early playoff exit, and maybe we’ll see a title or two in our lifetimes?

That’s horseshit. Baseball’s anti-trust exemption should have been revoked a long time ago (I actually wrote an epic paper about this some years back in a sports law class taught by Ed Garvey, NFLPA founder/former Democratic candidate for WI gov–I got my highest grade in school in that class, an “A+++”, hahaha), but now the bullshit is spreading. The NFL is going to totally implode if they go down this path like they appear dead-set on doing with the end of revenue sharing. Great, great, we can have all our leagues end up like the EPL where the big-four (Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelski) have a combined 98% chance of a title in any given year, and the other sixteen teams have a combined 2% chance. At what point do the bullshit “player loans” come into effect? I can’t wait for the day when the Yankees can bring in some elite ringers for a couple of weeks at the end of the season, just to rub everyone’s faces in it.

Why even be a fan if you have no prayer? Cubs fans don’t count, their games are just block parties masquerading as baseball. As some point people are going to stop giving a shit. Competition may be part of human nature, but baseball and football definitely aren’t and can easily be replaced by a legion of other pursuits, both extant and yet to be invented. Go ahead and wring that golden goose’s necks, you avaricious pricks, let’s see where it gets you in the end.

Totally agree dude. And the thing about the future of the NFL, everyone talks about the salary cap, but guess what will have an equal affect of ending – the salary FLOOR. Not only will the rich teams get richer, but the small market poor teams will get poorer (cheaper). Bye bye parity.

You certainly got a little lucky that Bruce Almighty got hurt in that game as it was very close up until that point and the Raiders D just gives up when they know their offense is just going to be offensive.
