Yahoo Friends & Family Draft

I don’t plan on posting the results of every draft I do. After all, I’m in far too many. However, I thought it would be worth posting the results of the recent Yahoo Friends & Family draft, which is probably the biggest industry league I’m in. It’s the first time I’ve been invited to participate, and it’s an extremely deep league, with 14 teams and a starting roster of 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 Flex, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Def. Scoring is pretty standard, except you get .75 points per reception. Here are the results.

Wow, Butterfinger Edwards and Papier Mache Bush before Drew freakin’ Brees and Manning? LenWhale before Rodgers and Rivers? It’s nonsense like this which causes me to think 2 QB leagues are the way to go, it’s just perverse for the most important position to be so obscenely undervalued that 5000-yard passers should fall behind dross and dreck. That’s not a slight on the ppl in this draft, you have to play within the rules/format, it happens in a lot of leagues. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. [g]

You must really like Royal this season, eh? I don’t think I could ever draft him that early, even in a full PPR w/ 3-4 wides, but that’s not because he’s not talented, it’s just because I got him for such an absurdly low price last year (R14 or whatever) that it’d be hard to stomach the huge markup. That said, I’ve seen him lingering a long time in mocks, it’s pretty possible I could get him as a cheap WR2/3 in the middle rounds somewhere. You really like him better than the Jacksons? Is that just a format issue (with the 3/4 PPR), or do you feel that way in standard scoring leagues?

How about Pierre Thomas @ #16, ahead of Gore and Jacobs? Pretty bold, makes Bush in the following round a total challenge bet. We’ll see. I actually liked what Liss was doing until he lost his fucking mind sometime around Round 6/7, taking Olsen a bit early and following that up immediately in the next round with a redundant 2nd TE, before proceeding to reel off a string of bad picks (Giants’ D early in the 10th? Seriously?) . Apparently that 7th round was where the LSD started taking effect.

Also, on the baseball front, in a H2H most-cats with weekly lineups, am I justified in feel that there’s no way a prudent owner can start NolASSco for his two-start week this week, given that his first game is AT the same Houston team which tore him to pieces in Miami this week like a pack of hyenas on a three-legged antelope?

I know you love him to death, but somehow I just don’t trust this guy yet. He scudded my dots this week, I only got the W this week because of a monstrous offensive week and a brilliant week by Madson (2 HLD and a W, exactly what I needed). I hate sitting high K/9 guys, esp. in two-start weeks, but after this most recent display I feel like I’d rather have the relative safety of Pineiro at SD, or maybe even roll the dice on Buchholz at Toronto. Am I overreacting, or is playing it safe this week the proper course of action?

I hear you regarding the (lack of) importance with QBs in fantasy football – it’s not at all a reflection of reality. Actually, me taking one in the 5th round is about as early as I’ll ever do so. But I love Schaub.

And yes, pretty high on Royal as well. At the time, there was still a decent chance Marshall was looking at a long suspension, so I guess I like Royal slightly less now that Marshall is back at practice and not incarcerated. And K. Orton could be a big problem. Still, I’m saying Marshall was a bigger product of Cutler, and Royal is the real deal talent wise. And with Denver’s D still likely to be horrible and McDaniels calling the shots offensively, I do expect a very big year from Royal. What he did as a rookie suggests he’s got HoF type talent. We’ll see. I feel that way in all formats.

I easily like him more than Vincent (b/c SD doesn’t throw all that often, there’s Gates in the RZ, and SD’s D should be much improved), but I do like DeSean quite a bit when it comes to the Jacksons. But hey, I was able to grab him the next round.

Liss is aggressive and doesn’t care about silly things like where someone is typically being drafted, which is basically like me, and I applaud the P. Thomas pick. The pick drew some laughter, and he even said he’s not totally sold on him being the main guy in N.O. – Gore is safer, but IF Thomas gets most of the carries, that’s top-5 upside in that offense. And I actually think both Thomas and Bush can be plenty productive – Bush is basically a WR anyway. Winslow is actually his FLEX right now as for picking two TEs.

Hey, I feel bad for hyping Nolasco yet again and then see him implode yet again. But personally, I’d absolutely start him this week – def. over Buchholz. Like the PIneiro start tho too.

Yunel and Helton for Willingham, Castillo, Capps AND Nathan?

I didn’t even really want to do that deal – it had been sitting in my queue as an offer for 4 days, but I decided to accept like 30 mins before our trade deadline. It’s questionable whether the saves help me at all. But ya, it was a good offer.

Ethics question: assuming you clinch a playoff spot (and in fact the #1 seed with automatic tiebreaker win) early, is it acceptable to bench your entire team against specific opponents in an effort to get an apparently weaker team into the playoffs while keeping a presumably stronger one out?

I say absolutely not. This is supposed to be fun, and that’s bad form. I wouldn’t do that myself, and if someone did it to me, I wouldn’t be back in the league, at a minimum.

I’m starting Nolasco this week…but that shelling got me 2nd guessing it a little bit. Having Wandy and Nolasco for their bombs last week was absolutely brutal; didn’t see either one coming, but I’m running both out again.

I agree with D3 on the ethics front; while I respect the move from a strategy standpoint, I think it’d be very poor form, and know I’d be really pissed off about it.

Thanks for the feedback, I was actually on the fence about it, kind of justifying it in my mind that real teams do it in real life, teams in the position to choose their opponent have earned the right to do so, blah blah blah. I guess I should say that the one team I was thinking about trying to block is owned by the league “commissioner”, a braying jackass who I only barely know outside of the league and who has tormented me for years, denouncing and trying to lead a veto (this, as a “commissioner”, mind you) of every trade I make as the end of civilization (most recently in the case of my Cain for another team’s Alexei Ramirez) in a blatant abuse of his “office” to try to block me as he sees me (not without reason) as his principle competition. Other owners have told me he’s privately begged and cajoled and tried to browbeat them into not dealing with me, regardless of what was on the table, and he’s bullied other owners to the point where they (including a few of this guy’s own real-life(TM) friends from the East Coast who’ve never even met me in person, I kid you not) have come to me to we’ve all agreed to quit en masse at the end of the year and form our own new dynasty league from scratch, excluding everyone but this commissioner, his sockpuppet brother, and a third really obnoxious jackass buddy of the “commissioner”, while bringing back a former owner who left last year because of the situation. It’s a shame b/c I had turned around the team I inherited four years ago, taking it from last-place to the championship last year, and first-place so far this season. But all of my own friends from Chicago who were in it have had enough of the two main jackasses and weren’t coming back regardless, so when the other East Coast guys came out and said they’d had enough as well, it was pretty much over after this year. We’re all just playing out the string before doing our reset in the offseason.

Anyway, I didn’t add that context to the query because the whole thing is too much damn drama for me, it’s unseemly, but in addition to displacing his (admittedly stronger) team, my motivation was to give the clown a little shot on the nose on my way out the door, hopefully getting a friend’s (weaker) team into the playoffs along with me. But you’re right, I shouldn’t give that joker the satisfaction, whether he deserves it or not. This league isn’t about “fun” anymore to me, hasn’t been all year, but I should still hold myself to a higher standard than simply sinking to this guy’s level. If anything, it’ll be sweeter to ride to a second consecutive championship, trampling roughshod over his team’s crumpled remains. And besides, my buddy’s team actually beat me earlier in our first tilt, while I went 2-0 in the regular season against the soon-to-be Lonely Commissioner, so I probably shouldn’t tempt fate.

I can’t imagine having both Wandy and NolASSco in the lineup for that last week, that must’ve been traumatic.

ddd- thank god you didn’t fall for the bs draft wr early that seems to be going around the internet. i knew i could trust you for this. My buddy just drafted 3 huge RB’s in a 2rb 2wr 2w/r league, s jackson, s slaton, and kevin smith. followed by Jennings round 4! wow, wish i coulda been in that league.

I hope all my competetors draft out the wrs in the first 3 rounds so badly… the extreme example is awesome, 10 teams, 3 rounds, (many sites are reccomending drafting 2 wr’s in first 3 picks). If each other team follows that rule, i’ll end up with 3 top 12 running backs?!? in first 3 picks. unreal.

The RB crop is a bit deeper than usual (b/c of increased timeshares), and the WR group is thinner as a whole, so I see some validity to taking a WR earlier. That said, RBs are still my preferred way to go, in most cases.

Keeper league question: slaton or chris Johnson get to keep either in fifth

I’ve struggled with the same question myself. I have them ranked back-to-back right now. And I like them both more than most. Gun to head, I’d take Slaton, but in cases that I view as close as this, my best recommendation is to go with your own gut. Both could lose goal-line carries, but Slaton is heavily involved in the passing game and could be in the backfield of the best offense in the NFL. C. Johnson seems like slightly less of an injury risk, and Tenn is the only team with three straight home games during weeks 14-16. Both face the NFC West this year, which is great news.

Well, I guess you were right about NolASSco. I wish I had listened–I very nearly did, having only subbed in Pineiro at the last second. Throwing away that game is going to hurt. God I hate that guy, he’s so wildly erratic that he’s almost unusable in H2H leagues. You play him and he can singlehandedly kill your team, sit him and you may lose one of the premier starts of the week. Guess I’ll just have to suck it up and ride the tiger the rest of the way.

Looked like he was going to get shelled again too after allowing two runs immediately. He nearly threw a perfect game after that.

Nolasco!! Now I just need Wandy to reward my faith as well.
