The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

Posting a 1.239 OPS in Triple-A, Nolan Reimold was making a case to be called up even before Felix Pie left Tuesday’s game with a stomach issue. Pie has done nothing but continue to disappoint this season, batting .180 while looking overmatched at the plate. In fact, he has just two extra-base hits over 61 at-bats. No 24-year-old should be written off, but his major league sample size is growing. While Pie is fantastic defensively, that type of futility with the bat won’t cut it. Meanwhile, Reimold has nine homers and five steals over 106 at-bats. He needs to be added in deeper formats.

I feel bad for Casey Blake’s ribs the next time he faces the Giants. I’ll feel even worse for him if he tries to retaliate.

After a no-hitter with a 17:2 K:BB ratio Friday, Stephen Strasburg now sports an 11-0 record with a 1.24 ERA. He hit 101 mph on the gun while consistently working at 99 mph. Over 87.1 innings this season, he has an acceptable 164:17 K:BB ratio. I’m seriously considering stashing him right now even in redraft leagues. My only hesitance is the fact Washington isn’t a contending team, or then it would be a no-brainer.

Hopefully Frank Francisco’s recent bout with biceps tendinitis isn’t serious, because he was quietly becoming one of baseball’s best relievers, having yet to allow a run this season. He posted a crazy 11.8 K/9 IP mark last year and had fanned 13 batters over 14.2 innings so far in 2009, leading the AL with nine saves…Speaking of closers, Joakim Soria’s bum shoulder reveals once again how few can repeat yearly in such dominant fashion. Really, there’s Mariano Rivera, Joe Nathan, Jonathan Papelbon and Francisco Rodriguez. It’s a crapshoot after that. Relievers are fickle.

I’m pretty pumped for “The Hangover.” Mainly because Zach Galifianakis is the best comedian alive.

I liked Aaron Hill as a sleeper entering the year, but in no way did I foresee this type of performance. How about a .357 BA with nine homers and 30 RBI over just 35 games? It’s safe to say he’s not quite this good, but there’s also no compelling reason to go selling hard…The Blue Jays as a team have really surprised, but they are clearly playing over their heads. It’s a nice story – they lead major league baseball with 204 runs scored, and I’d love to see the Yankees and Red Sox get competition along with the Rays, but it should be noted Toronto has played just four of its 35 games against division foes. For comparison’s sake, the Rays have already faced the AL East 21 times. Roy Halladay might be one of the 10 most valuable players in baseball, but expect the Blue Jays to come crashing back down to earth soon enough.

I’ll go one better and say Zach Galifianakis is the funniest man alive.
To appreciate Betwen Two Ferns, one should watch all four episodes.

Yeah, he’s pretty funny. It sucks that ‘Dog Bites Man’ wasn’t made into a full-time series. And I loved his turn with Will Oldham (who I’ve been into since forever) in that Kanye West video, how the three of them got together is one of the great mysteries of this young century.

But still, I’ll take Doug Stanhope.

Agree every “Between Two Ferns” is a must-watch.

I’m still waiting (and I will be forever) for “Dog Bites Man” to come to DVD, b/c I missed most of it when it aired, but I’m sure it was brilliant.

Dreamweapon – Can you point me to some Doug Stanhope stuff?

I dig Patton Oswalt’s stuff. Haven’t really watched Galifiankis’ stuff, but maybe I should. From what I’ve seen in small bits, he looks very funny in The Hangover.

DDD, I’m afraid I punted HR’s in my 16-team head-to-head league. Accepted a deal too good to pass up involving Carlos Pena, my best HR hitter.

    I have:
    C – John Baker
    1B – Adam LaRoche
    2B – Orlando Hudson
    SS- Jose Reyes
    3B – Chipper Jones
OF – Matt Holliday, Matt Kemp and Jacoby Ellsbury
    U – Willy Taveras
    BN – Matt LaPorta

SP – Tim Lincecum, James Shields, Ervin Santana, Adam Wainwright, Joba Chamberlain, Tommy Hansen, Ricky Romero, John Smoltz and three spots for streaming (probably just for this week).

Somehow I’m in sixth-place, but I don’t see my offensive ever consistenly comepting in BA/OBP and HR/RBI.

    Thanks.

I guess my question to you is should I trade somebody from my team for power, possibly Ellsbury? He’s been consistent for me, though, and helps with average.

Then I recently dropped Pierre for Taveras. Thought Willy’s a better long-term option.

Oh man, he’s done a number of specials and whatnot, was on some aborted television shows, but there are so many of his clips on Youtube that it’s probably a fine way to get introduced. I just took a quick look and found this piece on immigration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iir2ZQEEbLA&feature=related

A lot of people have compared him to Bill Hicks, which isn’t altogether unfair if not entirely accurate, but hey, I loved Bill Hicks, so it’s not a bad parallel as far as I’m concerned. Just take a half hour on youtube or so, it’s probably enough to know whether you’ll like his act or not.

PS: Jason Bartlett cannot be stopped!!!

Matt – It does look like your team is light in power. And heavy in steals. So that type of swap definitely makes sense. Since LaPorta is getting jerked around in the lineup, I might think about stashing Pierre instead if he’s still available. That way you can really afford to trade a SB guy. Any specific offers on the table?

Looking at teams in need of speed, one owner has Carlos Lee and Fielder. His backup at 1B is Guillen. Another has a Bruce-Ibanez-Beltran outfield, with Derek Lee riding the pine and Longo at 3B. He definitely can spare some power.

I also put in a waiver claim for Soto, will find out tommorrow if I get him. It’s a deep league, why not give it a shot, ya know?

Reimold’s also available, but I’m afraid he’ll get LaPorta treatment.

Matt – Did you get Soto? He should help if so. Will be interesting to see how Baltimore treats Reimold. Anyway, all of those guys seem like good targets you mentioned.

Missed out on Soto to first-place team, but he dropped Weiters to make room. Guess I’ll play the waiver game again.

    Thanks.

Frank Francisco actually has not allowed an earned run since mid August of last year. I think his streak is over 30 innings now with no earned runs allowed.

Good point. That’s quite a roll.
