Take Your Pick

By Dalton Del Don

Sorry for the lack of columns recently, I’ve been knee deep writing the running backs section for RotoWire’s fantasy football magazine. I’m almost finished, and I promise to have a “Scoop” column up Tuesday. But until then, I wanted to ask for help by bringing back “Take Your Pick.” There are a few backs I’m especially struggling with in the rankings, so any feedback and comments would be greatly appreciated and if convincing enough, could easily lead to changes in the mag. So I now open the floor to you:

Reggie Bush or Pierre Thomas?

LaDainian Tomlinson or Ronnie Brown or Kevin Smith?

Chris Wells or Knowshon Moreno?

Brandon Jacobs or Steven Jackson or DeAngelo Williams?

Marion Barber or Ryan Grant or Clinton Portis?

I will assume this for Standard scoring and not PPR

I would take Pierre Thomas over Bush. Bush coming off microfracture surgery concerns me. Thomas also has the ability to be productive in the receiving game. I still feel that Bush will get his 75 catches but Payton would really have to be foolish to not give Thomas 65% of the rushing attemps based on last year. Thomas was the 2nd highest scoring back over the last 6 games last year. It would seem that trend would continue. Even Aaron Stecker was more productive than Bush when Bush got hurt the previous year.

LT , Brown , K Smith is tricky. I think Brown has the most talent at this juncture but the Dolphins brass IE Bill Parcells prefers the two back rotation and I think they will continue to work Ricky in. Take away that first WIldcat game where here had 4 or 5 TD’s I forget and his season was pretty poor. I know it was his first year off the ACL surgery but the Dolphins have the toughest run schedule this year.

Smith surely showed improvement throughout the year and has little to no competition in Mo Morris. His team will be behind often however which tends to lead to some games of minimal attempts.

I guess I take LT for one last Hurrah. I wouldn’t want him as my one at this point but he sure makes a great 2. His disappointing season still ranked him top 10 despite all the disappointed owners.

I think Moreno is better but McDaniels really loved to rotate backs in NE and I see no reason why he won’t do the same in Denver. I hate AZ backs. I don’t think they have had any back average more than 4.0 a pop in a decade. I still will take Wells due to the fact that Hightower is awful and their offense is much better. Moreno in keeper leagues.

Steven Jackson for sure. Stud plus O-Line improvement. Deangelo will regress. Stewart will get too many carries this year for Williams to come close to duplicating his success. Jacobs is in a lesser class since he simply can not catch a football.

I can’t believe that just last year Barber was top 3 in my book. Unfortunately for him, Felix Jones looks like the real deal and will take away alot of his PT along with the occassional spelling by Choice and Barber slips to the 2nd round.

Portis is still a workhorse. Grant is too. I guess I would go with Portis. His track record is just too consistent to pass up.

Thomas. I don’t know if he’s all that great, but I know Bush absolutely sucks between the tackles.

Brown. This was actually the easiest one for me. The Dolphins seem to be well run and feature a creative pro offense. Brown was positively electric pre-injury, and they say the second full year back is when you hit your stride. If anyone in any of these lists has a chance of finishing the year as the #1 overall FFL player, it’s Brown, hands down.

Wells. He seems somewhat fragile but Hightower is just awful and they’ll probably run more post-Boldin. Knowing Grimm, they’ll be dying to get a ground game going.

Jackson. Conventional wisdom says Williams easily, I’m sure, but I just don’t trust him. I’d probably have Jacobs a full round behind either of the other two.

Portis. As you probably recall I didn’t like Barber all that much before last season. Now that he’s clearly just a cog in a three or four-headed machine, he seems like a marginal entity at best. I smell Ricky Williams ’08 all over this. Grant just isn’t consistent enough for a H2H format and GB’s passing attack is too awesome to dick around with a pedestrian running game more than necessary.

Bush – still a world of talent and N.O. has never seemed sold on Pierre
LT – still a solid #2 and low end #1, just not #1 overall any longer
Wells – will score 12 TD’s this year, not sure what Moreno will do
SJax – Stud, plain and simple, plus an improved Oline
Portis – workhorse back who will be great in weeks 1-6, then you need to trade him.

I really appreciate all the feedback guys. I definitely took it into consideration.

    As of now, I have:

    Thomas
    K. Smith
    Wells
    Jackson
    Barber

But it’s subject to change. And all those groupings I see as relatively close values.
