I would like this list a whole lot more if it included more than three of the players on my keeper team in a 12-team league. But it’s probably my keeper team that I should be mad at. Nice going, jerks.

Weirdest thing I’ve seen so far with only one of my four drafts in the books? Nick Markakis going number nine overall in my points league.

Holliday over Ellsbury–that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Pretty high on Votto this year, eh? In a keeper league, if you had a team that was poised to make a championship run this year (8 of your top-21 players), would you deal Morneau for Votto? Votto is still maintained by his owner as a “prospect”, meaning I would get him for 3 years without him counting against 7 regular keepers. As of now, Morneau would NOT crack my keeper list for next year, but I could deal him even next offseason for value so it’s not like he’d just be lost. Maybe it’s too early to think about this, though if Votto catches fire and approaches Morneau in raw numbers early, I’ll miss my window of opportunity as his owner won’t consider such a deal any longer. Hmmm.

Wait, I just noticed the elder Upton isn’t on this list but Granderson (the homeless man’s Upton) is….is that just a mistake or an intentional omission? If that latter, out of curiosity why are you down on the lad?

Stevie Ya Yo – Ya, that’s pretty high for Markakis.

Dreamweapon – Big mistake. For some reason, I accidentally omitted BJ Upton and E. Longoria, but both Rays have been added now. Thanks for catching that.

Yes, I’m definitely high on Votto. I would take Morneau over Votto in a redraft league this season, but I wouldn’t be shocked if that changed in 2010. Also, Mauer’s poor health could really hurt Morneau this season. He’s very much dependent on hitting well with RISP. If it makes sense for the future, that’s a trade I’d strongly consider.

I noticed the Upton deal too, earlier, when I was looking at the blog with my google reader and thought to comment. I dont’ comment much here, but I really enjoy reading your entries. Easily my favorite during the baseball season.

With Santana’s health seemingly not as big a worry right now, why do you have him so low? While I support you in being about the only person willing to rank Lince higher, Santana at 39 seems to be selling him short.

I’ll predict again that this is the year Vlad breaks down…though a lot of that is the wishful thinking of an A’s fan.

I also don’t think I can go for the high SB, low power OF’ers that early (Ellsbury, Ichiro). They need a high AVG to keep from hurting you, and I just feel like there are too many nagging hamstring injuries that can keep guys from running wild. I’d prefer to skip Crawford/Ichiro/Ellsbury et al and take Victorino/McLouth/Granderson/Hart types later; maybe a couple of them even.

Keith – here are my thoughts on J. Santana:

His velocity remains down right now as well. Now, don’t get me wrong – I know everyone else will make him the first or second pitcher off the board – I just won’t be one of them. Although I must say the news Mets Stadium appears to be an extreme pitcher’s park, which is obviously in his favor. As is the loaded lineup and improved bullpen. I really don’t have a problem with someone taking him in the mid-late second round, but I’d much rather Haren or Beckett (a lot) later, which you can typically do.

I was thinking more of your concerns were injury-related. From a value standpoint, I think taking a Haren/Beckett later is closer to what I’d do, but I do figure that with the offense + new pitcher’s park + improved bullpen I’d still have Santana comfortably ahead of the other arms from a pure ranking standpoint.

I can understand that. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Johan takes a big step back this year either.

    Hey DDD,

I was wondering why you have Kemp over Carlos Lee this season. And what are your drafting strategies in baseball, because this is a sport I know the least about in fantasy.

In my first draft, a 16-team league, I used your top 50 model and my first four picks were Reyes at No. 3, Holliday at 30, Kemp at 35, then Ellsbury at 62. I know drafting my entire outfield this early was probably a mistake, right?

Thanks, and I’m glad to be back on your site. It’s been a while.

Matt – Sorry for my slow response. It’s been a busy time for me recently. But I’m going to make it up with a bunch of posts soon. Anyway, Kemp and Carlos Lee are close, with Lee probably being safer and Kemp having more upside with the potential of going nuts. Lee’s on the wrong side of 30, whereas Kemp’s best days are ahead of him. Lee will be a bigger help in BA and RBI, but all those SBs is why I have Kemp ranked higher.

That seems like a very good start in a 16-team league. You certainly have steals covered. If it’s just a 3 OF format, which it sounds like, I guess you could have waited before filling out that position, but I don’t think that’s a huge deal.

I’m glad you’re back on the site. Now don’t leave again.
