The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

I’m a big fan of Elijah Dukes, both as a player and as a person (OK fine, mostly the former). He had a .972 OPS after the All-Star break last season, clubbing 10 homers (with five steals) over his final 124 at-bats. He also walked 50 times over 81 games, so a strong OBP looks likely. In 2007, he had a .192 BABIP while last year he hit just .233 against left-handers, and he’s still just 24 years old, so there’s room for plenty of growth as well. It’s not all good, as Adam Dunn and Lastings Milledge are locked into outfield jobs, while Nick Johnson will start at first if healthy. That leaves just one spot for Josh Willingham, Austin Kearns and Dukes, and as Scott Pianowski will rightfully tell you, it’s wrong to just assume a manager/coach will play the superior player, and it’s our job to predict playing time well aware that the guys in charge often make mistakes in this regard. That said, Johnson is a candidate to be traded or get hurt, Kearns sucks, and Willingham is hardly special, and that’s assuming Milledge and Dunn stay healthy. It might be frustrating at first, but Dukes could be the team’s best hitter this year, so his bat really will be hard to keep out of the lineup.

One of my favorite late round targets at middle infield this year is someone who hit .213 with a .599 OPS last year. Khalil Greene was flat-out awful in 2008, and Petco Park wasn’t even to blame, as he hit even worse on the road (.212). Still, for his career, he’s hit .270 with 25 homers per 162 games away from baseball’s toughest place to hit (and that accounts for last year’s disaster on the road). Greene is one year removed from a 27-97-89 season, is a plus defender and is in a contract year.  Admittedly, this is anecdotal and an area I usually like to avoid, but the Cardinals really do seem to get the most out of their players unlike any other organization, so expect his swing to get fixed. Greene isn’t going to be an All-Star and will never help your BA, but he’s an underrated target, and call me crazy, but the Cardinals’ lineup could be sneaky good.

Carlos Zambrano ending up on any of my fantasy teams this year would be a bigger upset than Heath Ledger losing at the Oscars on Sunday. Not only is he a ticking time bomb healthwise, his K rate dropped sharply last season (6.2 K/9 IP). Zambrano has gotten away with poor command his whole career, as his 1.89 K/BB ratio is countered by a .277 BABIP. Still, his stuff simply isn’t the same as it once was, and his ERA over the final two months last year was 7.28. Last year his xFIP was 4.68, which is about what I’d expect his ERA to be in 2009. Among starting pitchers, Zambrano is outside my top-50.

Looks like PEDs aren’t completely out of the game after all, as San Francisco’s Brian Bocock dabbled in the performance enhancers this offseason. Only not quite the ones you’d expect.

Justin Upton’s current ADP of 202 is simply too low. I mean, Xavier Nady’s is 146   and Eric Byrnes’ is 159! Umm, this is a 21-year-old who just posted a .922 OPS after the break last season. He wasn’t legally allowed to drink until the end of the year. Want to know what type of players make it to the majors and accumulate 100 at-bats at age 20? Dave Cameron compiled the impressive list here. Sure, Upton strikes out too often, but this is someone who posted a .955 OPS in Double-A as a 19-year-old. And while he doesn’t exactly have the best SB success rate, he’s very capable of swiping 20 bags if he wanted to next year. And I actually like the fact he had huge home/road splits in 2008 (1.039 OPS vs. .562), as Chase Field will remain an extremely favorable hitting environment while it stands to reason he’ll show marked improvement on the road. Go get him.

From young to old, Randy Johnson is another recommended target, and that’s not just because I’m a Giants homer. Obviously, there’s risk with a 45-year-old whose fastball is nowhere near what it used to be, but the Big Unit had a 2.14 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 78:16 K:BB ratio over 86 innings after the break last season. Now, he won’t get to beat up on the Giants anymore (1.04 ERA over 26 innings), but he remains in the NL West and moves from an extreme hitter’s park to a pitcher’s venue. Surgery has seemingly fixed his previous back problems, so while he’s no lock for 180 innings, he has the upside of a top-20 pitcher. Plus, there’s the added bonus if you draft him then you can name your fantasy team “Randy’s Johnson.” Always a crowd pleaser.

Agree on Dukes, but are we so sure Dun is not fixture at 1B regardless of Johnson? I do think Johnson gets dealt, but would be surprised to see Dunn in OF in WAS regardless.

Agree on Z, but he is not getting much love in leagues, which, to me, makes him a bargain. I am talking more dynasty than redraft, but like Greene, if you can get value in draft/trade and do not lean him as a #1 (or even a 2), he becomes value.

Washington has come out and said N. Johnson is the starter at first if healthy. I still say a trade is easily the most likely outcome there. Dunn prefers OF, but I agree, he makes most sense moving to first. I get the idea things will end up working out there one way or the other.

So really, how high would you be willing to go on Dukes in a draft, given his current adp. I agree with he potential, no doubt, but im wrestling with how much i should bank on him having a full and productive year.

Yeah, I feel the same about upton. Again, how high to go for him, I just don’t know. I don’t like getting burned banking on young kids really busting out. Sure, at 202 adp, he is a slam dunk though.

When to take Upton/Dukes is all relative to specific drafts, but I hear you regarding age – Upton will still probably have growing pains and won’t reach his ceiling for a few more years. Both of those guys do carry some risk.

fun fact: According to The Bill James Handbook – Upton hit the farthest homers on average than anyone in baseball last year.

Can anyone take a look at this “expert’s draft” over on ESPN.com and tell me how AJ Mass has a paying job doing this while millions of hard-working Americans are sitting at home unemployed?

Honestly, hands-down worst draft I ever saw, expert or first-draft n00b.

hi, i need some thoughts on my keeper team,i have johan santanna , felix hernandez, javier vazquez, johnny cueto, joba chamberlain, anthony reyes, carl pavano, yvani gallardo and joakim soria as my pitchers.
    i have joe mauer, chris snyder,miquel cabrera, travis ishikawa,jose lopez,felipe lopez,david wright,hanley ramirez,bobby crosby,bobby abreau, pat burrell,david dejesus,grady sizemore,johnny gomes,travis buck.
in my minor leagues i have rich hill, andrew brackman, madison bumgarner, trevor cahill, yoner alonso, michael burgess
okay here are my thoughts ———i need rf i only have travis buck, is it the perfect time to trade johan santanna or not, i have thought of trading santanna and joe mauer for justin upton and matt garza if that guy would do it.
if you were going to trade a santanna, who would you look at, is there anyone else on this team that you think it is the time to trade——–thanks

You discuss the crowded OF in WAS, but what do you think of the crowded outfield in AZ? Upton, Young, Jackson, Byrnes?

Randy — Seems to me you are overpaying. Love Upton and Garza, but why offer Johan & Mauer? And do you need Garza? Why not simplify the offer?

I’d offer something like Cueto and Cahill or Bumgarner for Upton.

Seems like that would be a great deal for you and you are sending him some quality young arms. My opinion.

interesting tylerdurden, but i dont think he will take that, i also wonder if trading mauer aint the right time also———what ya think——-thanks

okay —–another trade i have thought of is johan santanna, pat burrell , and travis buck for john danks, jermy hermida, and hank blalock——–what ya think

First trade scenario. Still think you are overpaying,. I play in plenty of dynasty keepers and Mauer alone could/should get Upton because of position scarcity.

It’s fine to say ‘he won’t go for it’ but then I’d find someone with a RF that would. Plenty of teams always need SP. If it is Upton you want, though, then go get your man as you won’t be satisfied until you do.

Second: a lot of apples for apples in my book and I’d rather have best player in the deal — Johan.

tylerdurden,——–i agree with you on both deals, that is why i havent done them yet, but i did offer joe mauer for upton and he turned it down, i probably will sit but just wondering about these deals———-any real players you really like for next year

  15. TylerDurden Avatar
    TylerDurden

I’d use the good old on the block — “Joe Mauer for a young RF” — when used right, on the blocks can bring deals to you. I would suspect Mauer on the block would bring people bearing offers.

Any RFs I like next year? Many, but gettable guys might include Rios, Ethier, Hawpe, Choo & Dukes

Dreamweapon – Pretty funny. That guy is a big believer in Huff! Basically, it seems he was trying to draft the best team with 2008 results.

Randy – I agree with much of what Tyler Durden has said here. While I actually do agree with you now might be the right time to deal Santana, make sure you get plenty in return. If anyone values Anthony Reyes at all, I’d def have no qualms throwing him in a deal as well. Keep Bumgarner. Johan for J. Upton straight up really wouldn’t be that crazy if you want a RF badly. Will he do that?

Donald – Looks like Byrnes is the odd man out. He’ll be an expensive 4th outfielder. That said, if Reynolds, Tracy or any of the 3 OFs get hurt, he’ll get the PT since there’s a lot of flexibility there. That’s five who need to stay healthy to keep him in a bench role full time.

I side with Tyler Durden on this one. Those were some pretty good offers – but I can’t imagine doing Johan for Upton, but maybe that’s just me.

I’m torn on my last couple keeper spots. We keep 10, and it’s a 6×6 league with BB’s as a category for hitters.

    Chris Davis (eligible at 3B)
    Shane Victorino
    Nate McLouth
    Stephen Drew
    Yovani Gallardo

As of right now, I’ve only got 3 keeper spots left, and can’t make up my mind. In case I can’t work any trades, I’m not sure who to keep. Any thoughts?

  20. Dreamweapon Avatar
    Dreamweapon

I’d probably do Davis. I know SS is a premium position and all but I just can’t get past the fact that Drew is, well, a Drew. The first two were bum steers, and however you look it (genetics/heredity says he’s probably fragile, upbringing/environment says he was likely raised to be a pussy), there is reason to be cautious. McLouth just seems like he played over his head a bit and may have already had his career year. Gallardo is tempting, but all else being equal, you almost have to take the bat over the arm if their more or less equivalent in value. Can’t you find some weak team with bad options and pool a few of these guys together for a Top-30 type?

    C. Davis, Victorino and Gallardo. But all close in value.

I side with Davis, Drew & Gallard.

Easier to get back or replace Victorino or McLouth IMO.

Wow, thanks for the feedback…I guess the fact that the opinions vary speaks to the closeness of value.

I’ve got a couple weeks to work trades, but the league is pretty top-heavy, so it’s hard to get a top-30 guy back (I gave up Hart, Kershaw and Price to get Beltran).

Youth/upside has me leaning towards Davis, plus Drew for positional scarcity (I feel you Dreamweapon – heredity scares me), and then I really want to keep Gallardo, but feel McLouth is worth the most (especially since he has a good BB rate, which helps in our league – but I do worry that was his career year).

Hopefully I can find a trade partner, but I appreciate the input…and damn am I ready for the season to start!

I turned Mauer and Victorino into BJ Upton, so I’m pretty pleased with that since I now get to keep one more of those guys above.

  26. Kadir Avatar

I agree that that if Upton is traded, they need to chosoe between Guyer and Jennings. I’d chosoe Guyer at this point due to his better average, and he has a propensity for rising to the occasion (remember he homered in his first big league at bat). Guyer also has a very strong and accurate arm, having 12 assists in only 71 games. I think either right now would only be a slight dropoff from BJ when considering overall game. Fuld also looks like he can’t hit well enough to be a regular, so I’m with you there. As for Lobaton: he hit .400 in spring training this year. While I’m sure some of those AB’s were against minor leaguers, it tells me that, combined with these 3 months in Durham, he has improved quite a bit at the plate. He is a switch-hitter, which comes in handy as relievers come in later in games. He is especially strong against lefties, hitting .404, which is the role the awful Shoppach plays. Lobaton has been in our past 2 spring trainings, and was also a call-up at the end of last year for 3 weeks, when I’m sure he caught our pitchers a lot in the bullpen. And like you indicated, he knows Hellickson quite well from the minors. Besides, when Jaso was summoned last year when Shoppach was hurt for 2 months, did our starters falter? No, they did just fine with a catcher they hardly knew.
