The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

Eventually, San Diego was bound to cover one of those crazy spreads, and Oakland was more than happy to oblige. The Raiders look competent at times, but when they are bad, they are awful. To think, they drafted Michael Huff over Jay Cutler and JaMarcus Russell instead of Calvin Johnson. And there’s never a good reason to draft a running back early. Adrian Peterson was the exception, not the rule…Zach Miller is the only decent offensive player…In one of the most crucial fantasy weeks of the year, I’m starting the Patriots D over the Titans because they play Oakland…What is going on with Antonio Gates? He must really be hurting…Norv Turner is doing opponents a favor every time he plays LaDainian Tomlinson instead of Darren Sproles…I’m beginning to think Kwame Harris wasn’t worth a first round pick.

Think Jacksonville is regretting the David Garrard contract? Same with Jack Del Rio, who seems to have completely lost this team. Still, neither of those are nearly as egregious as Jerry Porter’s deal…In most other seasons, Matt Forte would be the clear Rookie of the Year winner. In 2008, he’s a distant second, highlighting the most impressive rookie class in the history of the NFL…Maurice Jones-Drew continues to be one of my favorite running backs to watch. Get this guy 25 touches each week!

At this point, Adrian Peterson feels like a family member to me, but that was quite a disappointing performance last week. Forget the 4.4 YPC mark against the NFL’s worst run defense, AP’s fumbling has become a real problem…If starting a franchise from scratch, Calvin Johnson would easily be the first wide receiver off the board. He’s without question a top-10 property in the league…Looking ahead to Week 16, the Saints’ D may not be a bad fantasy play against a potentially Drew Henson led Lions team. The Colts’ D looks like the best option over Weeks 14 and 15. Go figure.

The Packers’ secondary has taken a step back recently since Charles Woodson has moved to safety, but Matt Schaub was highly impressive last week. He can’t be counted on to stay healthy, but I bet he ends up on a bunch of my fantasy teams once again next year…So much for the Brandon Jackson speculation. He must be a terrible blocker and/or horrible practice player, because he’s done nothing but outperform Ryan Grant whenever on the field this season…It’s hard to fathom the fact Houston has a better record (6-7) than Green Bay (5-8)…Steve Slaton has been simply fantastic. This kid can really play, and if he’s asked to carry the full workload next season, there’s a good chance he’ll finish as a top-10 fantasy player.

The Colts haven’t allowed a touchdown in eight quarters. Meanwhile, the Bengals haven’t scored a TD in 11 quarters…How did this Cincinnati team tie Philadelphia again?…Maybe Carson Palmer is planning on waiting for training camp to undergo Tommy John surgery…Joseph Addai is a fraud. He drops passes, he fumbles, he gets 3.5 YPC. I’d start him this week, of course, but I wouldn’t feel all that confident in doing so.

How good is Roddy White? There isn’t a team in the NFL with a more impressive nucleus of young skill position players than Atlanta. And it’s not even close…Pierre Thomas is the Saints’ best running back. Period. Speaking of which, how crazy is it that Reggie Bush’s 43-yard run Sunday was the longest of his career?…There aren’t enough superlatives to describe Matty Ice at this point. Over the last two weeks, he’s completed 73 percent of his passes, got 9.3 YPA and taken zero sacks. He’s the best NFL rookie in the history of the league, hands down…Trailing 29-24, Mike Smith chose to punt on fourth-and-five from his own 35 with 3:23 left in the game. This despite facing the league’s No. 1 ranked offense. Predictably, the Falcons never got the ball back.

Domenik Hixon’s drop on a would-be 85-yard TD was a game changer, but that was still an impressive performance by the Eagles’ D. Anyone who doesn’t think the loss of Plaxico Burress is significant is crazy…So it looks like Brian Westbrook is feeling better. Expect a similar effort Monday night at home against the Browns….Brandon Jacobs’ lingering knee injury is a real concern. Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw are going to be major contributors from here on out.

Ken Dorsey is really bad at football. Philadelphia is the No. 1 fantasy D this week…How about Jamal Lewis getting 1.1 yards per touch last week? That’s not very good…Chris Johnson is on pace to finish the season with 1,663 total yards and 11 touchdowns. There’s a chance he also finishes fifth (or worse) on Rookie of the Year ballots.

Buffalo has won three straight coin tosses, deferred each time and has started behind 7-0 in all three instances. I actually like deferring, but that’s pretty crazy…This Dolphins turnaround is quite remarkable. Still, they better not take the 49ers lightly this week…I’m not saying their 4-0 start was a complete fraud – Trent Edwards was playing much better then, but looking back at that schedule (Seahawks, Jaguars, Raiders, Rams), the big collapse since then is less surprising.

Where did that come from Seneca Wallace? Easily the surprise performance of Week 14…Did you see Deion Branch completely run out of gas toward the end of his 63-yard reception? However, he did make up for it with a nifty catch in the end zone…I’ll keep riding the John Carlson train until it stops. Next up, the Rams…I’d be fairly shocked if Matt Hasselbeck plays in another game this season…Wes Welker is seriously good. He’s an absolute PPR monster. A trip to the end zone would be nice, however.

Update on my preseason bet with Chris Liss (Brandon Marshall vs. Randy Moss): Marshall – 83 catches, 1,033 yards, six TDs. Moss – 61 catches, 841 yards, eight TDs. Go Baby T.O.!…Rough ending for Peyton Hillis, who had really been playing well. Can’t believe Tatum Bell is relevant again…Tony Gonzalez is ageless. Sometimes the boring veteran option is the way to go…I have a dilemma. In my main home league, I’m debating whether to start Jay Cutler or Tyler Thigpen this week. On one hand, Cutler is the better player and has also put up bigger numbers while on the road this season. However, Carolina’s secondary has been very good (Monday night notwithstanding), while San Diego’s D has allowed 21 passing TDs this year, the third most in football. KC/SD should be a shootout, and Thigpen has been a TD machine despite a mediocre YPA. Plus, he’s averaged 39.0 rushing yards over the last four games, which is just like adding one passing score. So, whom should I go with?

Shame on me for picking against the 49ers last week. That line screamed something fishy. The Jets’ passing offense is a mess. Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles combining for two catches and 15 yards?…It may not always be pretty, but Shaun Hill is highly effective. Unless something drastic happens, he’s clearly the team’s undisputed starter entering 2009…Only Mike Martz would call a seven-step drop from the opponents’ three yard line. And it resulted in a touchdown…Alan Faneca’s play has really started to slip of late. He made Justin Smith look like an elite rusher last week…What a blow for Frank Gore owners. It makes it even more difficult when his backup is a stiff like DeShaun Foster.

If Tim Hightower can only muster 2.7 YPC while playing at home against the Rams and with St. Louis focusing on stopping Arizona’s high-powered passing attack, then he doesn’t belong in fantasy lineups. No matter what…The Rams need to use their likely top-3 pick next year on a quarterback, assuming one makes sense. Speaking of which, I don’t watch much college football at all, but Tim Tebow will be a terrible pro, right?

Tony Romo hardly played well, but Jason Witten was the culprit of two huge late game gaffes. First the 25-yard “pick six.” And later on Dallas’ last offensive play, when he was apparently running a 30-yard route on a fourth-and-10, never bothering to look the QB’s way…What’s up with Jerry Jones throwing Marion Barber under the bus? Call me crazy, but he seems like a pretty tough player to me…Tashard Choice has impressed, but with a Sunday night game on tap in Week 15, that backfield situation is going to be a nightmare for many fantasy owners during the most crucial of times…I applaud Mike Tomlin’s aggressive coaching, and that defense is one of the best ever, but Ben Roethlisberger needs to play better if they are going to win the Super Bowl…Dallas’ defense is for real, and the team was surprisingly physical despite the elements. I still pick them to win the Super Bowl.

I’m thinking the Redskins are regretting the Jason Taylor trade right about now. That offense is one of the very worst in football. They’ve scored fewer points than Detroit!…And what about Jim Zorn using a challenge with the end result being a difference of six yards (first down either way)? Seemed like a good time not to throw the flag there Jim…I would not want my favorite team facing the Ravens in the playoffs. They are very, very good.

For someone so critical of Tony Kornheiser on MNF, I have to give credit when it’s due. His “he went to Jarrett” line after Dwayne made a catch was positively brilliant. I cannot get that “Jared” commercial out of my head. I walk around randomly saying that phrase with or without people nearby. I’m one more away from my fiancée leaving me…What a game by Antonio Bryant. There’s serious talent there…Somewhat quietly, Carolina might have the best rushing attack in the NFL. The Giants have a strong argument, and their 4.9 YPC mark would be the best in the history of the league, but the Panthers aren’t far off with 4.8 YPC, and they’ve also rushed for seven more touchdowns (23-to-16). I’ll give the run blocking to New York, but I say Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams are both better than any Giants back. Stewart is a future star, but how about Williams’ nine TDs over the last four games? He’s definitely improved and become more powerful this season, but his performance is also an indictment on John Fox’s coaching ability. Shame on him for giving DeShaun Foster 100-plus more carries than Williams last year…Ultimately, Jake Delhomme hurts their chances, but if the Panthers can somehow get homefield advantage throughout (and they control their own destiny), this team might just make the Super Bowl.

It’s been a great career Oscar De La Hoya, but please, hang ‘em up. What a clinic Manny Pacquiao put on. If he were ever to get in a ring with Floyd Mayweather, I’d happily open my wallet…At first I thought it was just a bad dream, but I can’t believe “The Roots” are really going to be Jimmy Fallon’s house band. Wow. I’m speechless.

Next season’s top-five fantasy rankings:

1. Adrian Peterson
2. Brian Westbrook
3. Michael Turner
4. Frank Gore
5. Marion Barber

Great column, however you failed to give any airtime to the fact that DeAgelo Williams gaining 99 yards and 2 TDs in the 4th quarter of MNF during the fantasy playoffs is/was one of, if not the most, season changing event in the history of fantasy football.

Up there with Westbrook’s taking a kee at the one and SD sitting LT during the 2nd half of MNF of Week 16 last year.

Haunting for those that lost to DeAngelo’s stats & a sheer miracle for those that netted a W from them.

    Just my opinon.

durden makes a great point those williams tds absolutely destroyed my playoff run. I started tampa bay def, quick question as of right now who goes higher and where do they go. chris johnson or steve slaton

Good point TD. That was an insane turn of events. Williams is out of control right now. And he gets a home game against Denver this week!

splevelbuge – This is off the top of my head and certainly subject to change, but I actually see both of those guys going anywhere from 6-12. Seriously. That high. I do worry about Houston bringing in a bigger back to share the load, but I guess I’d have to say Slaton goes higher. But that’s extremely close.

Yo 3d, since its the playoffs, any chance of a more comprehensive ranking deal, as hard as that sounds? What I mean is a TE, K, and D ranking 1-10 in addition to your usual awesomeness…

    Excellent work.
I survived my opponent having williams on MNF by a mere 1 point. Thank God hightower scored a TD. But hillis going down, and MB3 being hurt, really puts a crimp in my chances this week. Here is to hoping that maurice maurice can save my season. I hate myself for having to say that.

I wouldn’t say the Panther pass D is good or anything. There was a major change midseason where they went from blitzing effectively on a regular basis (a new development this year) back to the old “only rush 4 in straight lines except when we rush 3 and drop Pep/Lewis into coverage” strategy. I’m not sure the reasons why, only that the Panther pass D has been carved up ever since. Don’t be too shocked if Cutler puts up #1 overall numbers this week, even with no run game.

I dunno if Carolina has the best rushing game in the NFL, but the right side of their line (plus LG Wharton when he pulls) has been exceptional since Otah came back from injury. Wharton may have won the Green Bay game for Carolina with his play, which is something I’ve never been able to say about any guard except Hutchinson.

Re: Fox’s coaching ability, yeah, don’t get me started. That wasn’t even close to his worst personnel choice last year (think “Keary Colbert”), though. He typically prefers to sit rookies behind vets almost no matter how good either is. He starts first rounders about half of the time, but non-#1 picks only get to start on rare occasion without injuries (Manning Jr, half a season of Witherspoon, and Godfrey this year). Something to remember for next year’s draft, since they don’t have a first rounder.

Re: Delhomme hurting Carolina’s chances… compared to who? Josh McCown? Matt Moore? Recall that Delhomme has one of the top post-season passer ratings in NFL history and has led as many 4th quarter comebacks as any other NFL QB since he’s been with Carolina. There’s a reason for that; the gunslinger mentality that makes him jaw-droppingly awful at times also makes him spectacular at times. No, I wouldn’t want him as my fantasy QB, but I wouldn’t want Eli Manning as that, either.

On that topic, of the 12 teams currently qualifying for the playoffs, who is a sure thing? I’ll give you Peyton. Which other QB doesn’t have big, justified question marks surrounding them?

Re: top 5 for next year, I wouldn’t place Turner at #3. Too inconsistent, and I can’t imagine Atlanta will have as running-friendly a schedule next year as they had this one.

Hey, wait a minute–Welker cannot be seriously good if Houshmandzadeh sucks, they’re practically the same guy. One has 8 more catches on nearly identical targets for 117 yards, the other has three more TDs (i.e. a classic wash).

As for the top-5 next year, I am (currently) loving being a Westbrook owner, but I think I would pass on him that high again next season. Owning him was a roller coaster (and one of the huge Japanese coasters, not some sissified Coney Island thing) this season, and probably cut months off my life. He’s just so injury prone, and now he’s getting a bit long in the tooth now as well. As Tomlinson and Alexander owners know all too well, getting these aging studs in the year they suffer The Fall is a lot to take.

PS: Hypothetically speaking, if you had a dominant team during the regular season but lacked any real RB options after Addai and Gore this week and faced a reasonably decent team, would you be seeing your season circle around the drain right now? [g]

Kritter – Not sure. I’ll try, but I’m pretty swamped this week. If I’m unable to do that, just ask me specific questions in the comments (this D vs. this D), and I’ll be sure to respond.

Donald – That must have been a pretty epic Monday nighter for you.

  14. RotoScoop Avatar

jdb – I’m guessing you are a Panthers fan? Their overall pass D numbers are pretty damn impressive – 6.4 YPA, 13 passing scores allowed. But you could very well be right that they have regressed. John Fox is pretty good other than the playing time issues, right? I’m actually a Jake Delhomme fan (and of course he’s better than the team’s other options), but 15 TDs paired with 14 turnovers is a real problem. He doesn’t take many sacks, and his 7.4 YPA mark is pretty solid, so I’m not saying he’s some bum. In fact, he can be great at times, but he’s pretty mistake prone, and Steve Smith makes him look a little better than he really is. Did the surgery affect him? Maybe. Of the other possible playoff teams, I’d say Warner, Romo and Cutler are all very, very good, but your overall point is well taken; lots of question marks at QB.

Regarding Turner – I hate how he doesn’t catch any passes. That makes him WAY too dependent on schedule. That said, with Ryan, White and Baker, that offense should only get better for years to come. Huge TD potential. I agree there are question marks with Turner, but seriously, who would you feel more comfortable with?

Dreamweapon – Hey, I never said Housh sucked, just that he was overvalued as a fantasy player entering the year. And after losing Palmer, I’m highly impressed with what he’s been able to do. I def. consider him skilled. Both he and Welker are the NFL’s best “possession” receivers.

If anyone has read any of my material over the past couple of years, it’s that I hate aging running backs. I didn’t want to put Westbrook #2, and in fact, I can almost guarantee you I won’t draft him next year. Too injury prone. Approaching 30. Etc. That said, Alexander has 2,187 career carries. LT2 has 2,607. Westbrook has 1,206! That’s a big, big difference. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll probably (like usual) back off and be scared off as well next year, but is there a clear #2 ahead of him?

  17. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

And yes, NOT hypothetically speaking, I’m screwed in the RotoScoop Invitational this week. What a joke. My team is good enough to earn a bye last week, and now I lose Gore (who I specifically traded for the playoffs) and Addai (and I offered great deals for Rhodes the last week of the season just for insurance). Congrats on your victory.

  18. Nat Avatar
    Nat

You offered me a great deal for Rhodes. I’m just glad I didn’t take it.

I have the same dilemma in my primary league: Cutler or Thigpen? I’m thinking of doing eeny meeny or having my girlfriend choose. Cutler will have to throw a lot and Marshall looked sweeeet last week, but throwing into that D? Yuck. Gonzalez, Bradley and Bowe in the Chargers Secondary smells like Christmas dinner to me…

Choose 3 this week: Portis, Chris Johnson, Slaton, Ward, Rhodes. Tatum Bell and Fargas are riding pine. I have so many RBs… ESPN projections would choose Ward, Johnson and Portis… but they also don’t consider Addai being out.

  19. Stevie Ya Yo Avatar
    Stevie Ya Yo

I traded Gore specifically because I hate having the one good player on the bad NFL team at the tail end of a(nother) wasted season. I’m still not quite sure what I accomplished in turning Gore, MarLynch and Cal Johnson into Purple Jesus and Andre Johnson, but it works within my philosophy, at least.

How drunk am I to be considering keeping both Panther RBs in a league in which I can only keep three players!?!?!? (Only other real keeper candidates are L-Fitz, Cassel and Brandon Breakobs, er, Jacobs.)

  20. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Nat – Damn you for not trading me Rhodes!

Portis, C. Johnson and Rhodes. Wow tough benching Slaton and D. Ward. Basically all are borderline top-10 starts. That’s who I’d go with tho.

  21. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Stevie Ya Yo – But Gore getting hurt had nothing to do with what team he was on. Not that his injury risk wasn’t another factor as well. I’m bitter.

That’s not crazy at all keeping both Carolina backs. Also keep Fitz. Let Jacobs and his injuries go.

  22. Kritter Avatar
    Kritter

Actually I was more concerned with Kickers, as my TE (Gates) and D (Pitt) are pretty well set, at this point I feel my team is very strong, but what would u say are the top 10 Kickers?

  23. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

That’s a fool’s errand trying to predict kicker output on a weekly basis. Go with a team you feel confident will score a lot and won’t have to deal with bad weather, preferably a dome. Seriously, that’s way too hard to predict.

    D- Steelers

Thanks for the reply, Dalton. I’m a little bit of a Panthers fan. Happens when you live in Charlotte.

They’ve regressed some over the past 6 weeks in pass D. Leaving out Detroit and Oakland (not exactly tests of a team’s pass D), they gave up 7.1 YPA to Arizona (season average 6.7), 9.3 YPA to Atlanta (6.5 season average), 6.2 YPA to GB (vs. 6.4), and 6.9YPA (vs. 5.9) against the Bucs. In addition, in those four games, the QBs are averaging a little over 65% completions. Only 2 INTs across that span as well; while they had 9 sacks in those 4 games, 6 of those were against Atlanta. Pretty much what you’d expect from a soft, “don’t lose the game” zone with little blitzing.

Delhomme’s very mistake prone – but that’s nothing new. He always had 1-3 erratic games each season, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting up extremely good postseason numbers in the past. He’s really a poor man’s Brett Favre: great when he’s on, horrible when he’s not, almost always on when it matters.

Actually, Jake’s numbers this season have been right at his career averages everywhere except TDs; having a decent run game for the first time since 2003 seems to me the most likely explanation for that change. Obviously, not comforting to his fantasy owners, but Panther fans don’t mind that we have two RBs able to punch the ball in from 20 or 30 yards out.

And, yes, Smith obviously makes him better, but don’t forget that when Smith missed almost the entire 2004 season, Delhomme had nearly his best season with only Muhammad as a target (that was the season Moose was statistically the best WR in the NFL). It’s a mutual thing; would Smith be as good as he is if Delhomme didn’t have the utter faith in him he does? And that’s true of almost every QB; even Brady’s numbers were just okay until he got Moss to throw to.

  31. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

jdb – Good stuff. I think your numbers are little off regarding the pass D (Atlanta has a much higher YPA than that and was only sacked once the last time they faced Carolina), but I get your point in general.

And the Delhomme comparison to Favre is apt. He does have that gunslinger mentality and has played well in the postseason. I have very fond memories of that magical season Moose had – he carried me to a championship. Watched him personally in SF haul in 3 TDs. He was the man.

  32. jdb Avatar
    jdb

Oops. You’re right, Dalton. Re-ran the numbers and Atlanta’s over 8 YPA passing; Jax was right below them on the spreadsheet and I think I grabbed their YPA. And the 6 sacks were against TB on MNF; typo. Insert red face smiley here.
