First Base Rankings

Here’s an updated, midseason version of rankings. This isn’t based on how they’ve played so far, but rather, how I view them from this point going forward.

On a side note, I’ll be in Vegas for the next few days and almost always away from a computer, so my responses to you heaping praise (or calling me an idiot) in the comments section may be delayed a bit. But don’t take it personally, you know I love ya. And if I left someone off completely who should be on there, chances are I’ll be ranking them under a different position.

1. Ryan Howard
2. Albert Pujols
3. Lance Berkman
4. Mark Teixeira
5. Prince Fielder
6. Adrian Gonzalez
7. Derrek Lee
8. Justin Morneau
9. Carlos Pena
10. Kevin Youkilis
11. Paul Konerko
12. Conor Jackson
13. James Loney
14. Joey Votto
15. Jason Giambi
16. Casey Kotchman

Call me crazy, but I think Aubrey Huff cracks this Top-10. He’s having as good a year as he ever has, and has always been a second-half player. I’d love to have him as a CI-type player going forward. Some of the guys between him and that spot can hit for average, but I just feel, right or wrong, that I HAVE to have better power production from my 1B…..so I’m just not high on Loney, Kotchman or CoJack at all (paging Lyle Overbay, please pick up the white courtesy phone). As a relatively close Sox watcher, I also think Konerko might be a spent force–if they were smart, they’d give serious thought to priming Fields at first as a patch since Crede is obviously not getting traded.

Morneau is #3 by player rating in many formats, but I completely agree with the #8 here. His ’06 second half was disappointing, but last year’s shitfest was downright depressing. I made a draft-day deal of Teixeira and crap for Morneau and Kemp, and while I’m thrilled by how it’s turned out so far, I’m terrified of holding Morneau in the fear of a 5-HR, .245 second half and am desperately trying to peddle him with a stud arm in the Cain/Harden (and possibly even Sheets) class for an upgrade to Fielder or Howard. I hope he reverses the trend, but I’m down with the “sell”.

Didn’t you make fun of Huff earlier this year, even after the hot start? I just don’t trust him, but he’s def. been awesome so far. And he did used to be good in TB. And although I like that trio Loney/Kotchman/CoJack, I totally hear you about their utter lack of help in the power department. It’s a problem. I hope you’re wrong about Konerko, but maybe he’s finally healthy and that low BABIP is due for correction.

Morneau suffered a chest injury in a violent collusion at home plate last year, which might be directly related to his poor play afterward. So there’s some hope he’s not just a first half player.

Dude, lets be reasonable. How many times do I have to mention Chris Davis? I would bet my fantasy season that he is a top 12 1B over the rest of the season. I actually traded G Atkins for Him straight up when he was recalled. Probably the craziest trade that can be made, but if you know C Davis, it had to be done. Clearly, I recommend everyone try to acquire his services.

A clear oversight on my part. At first I thought he’d be in a time crunch, but with news of Blalock moving back to third, C. Davis is def. a solid option. That’s a crazy trade for Atkins, but I like your aggressiveness.
