The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

After another brilliant performance Sunday, Kevin Slowey has to be considered a major asset in even the shallowest of mixed leagues. His current 3.47 ERA will likely never be better because of his tendency to give up home runs, but his control is outstanding (1.12 BB/9 IP), so most of the long balls are solo shots, leaving him with an exemplary WHIP (1.04). His last four starts have all come against NL teams, which has certainly helped, but his 6:1 K:BB ratio on the year is elite. Teammate Scott Baker has been similarly impressive.

If a fantasy draft were held today, I’d have no problem whatsoever with C.C. Sabathia being the first pitcher taken. How about a 36:4 K:BB ratio over the past four starts? On May 3, he had a 7.51 ERA – 10 starts later that number is all the way down to 3.78. Sabathia gave up six more runs over the first 18 innings this season than he’s allowed during 96.1 innings since. Last season’s big workload is still a concern, but there’s certainly nothing to worry about the way Sabathia is currently throwing.

There’s not much to like about Pedro Martinez’s 7.12 ERA and 1.75 WHIP, but consider his last three starts came against the Rangers, Rockies (in Coors Field) and Yankees, so I’m not ready to write him off just yet.

It’s safe to say Billy Beane is kicking himself for not dealing Joe Blanton during the offseason. After getting pounded by the Giants on Sunday, Blanton’s ERA is now an ugly 4.97. His BABIP is similar to last season, but he’s walking more batters while striking fewer out. His true skill level is probably somewhere in between last year and this year.

Even though I own him in zero leagues, I hated to see Jacob McGee go down. The Rays are still in place for a big run this decade, but that was a major blow.

Over his last four starts, Rocky Nolasco has posted a 27:4 K:BB ratio with a 0.91 WHIP, so he can no longer be ignored. His BABIP and strand rate aren’t flukish, and last year’s awful campaign can be directly related to injury. The former fourth round pick once posted a 2.95 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with a 9.63 K/9 IP mark in Double-A as a 22-year-old, so this isn’t coming completely out of nowhere. Nolasco has also increased his velocity this year. With three upcoming starts against the Nationals, Padres and Dodgers before the All-Star break, he needs to be owned in fantasy leagues.

Gil Meche endured a rough April, but he has a 1.13 WHIP with a 3.1:1 K:BB ratio since then. His terrible first month is still bringing down his overall numbers, but a 7.8 K/9 IP mark over the last two months suggests he’s well worth owning. Contracts like Barry Zito’s and Carlos Silva’s are going to look far worse than the one Meche signed.

So far, my preseason advice to avoid Javier Vazquez at all costs has looked good. He hasn’t allowed fewer than four runs in any of his starts during the month of June. Like the rest of his career (other than last year’s aberration), his fantastic K rate and K:BB ratio don’t match up to his ERA. Vazquez has been unlucky (.345 BABIP), so expect his WHIP to drop, but he still allows too many homers and struggles from the stretch to be a help in the ERA department. And in all fairness, I was also high on Brett Myers entering the year.

Hopefully David DeJesus’ recent rib injury isn’t too bad, because he’s been a nice surprise in 2008, thanks in no small part to a major league leading .463 batting average with runners in scoring position. Don’t mess with the DeJesus.

    Nice column.

    A few (selfish) questions?

    -Buying ‘low’ on Bedard?
    -Selling high on Saunders?
-Thoughts on Kenji for rest of year, next year, forever.
-Thoughts on 2008 MLB Draft Class, 2009 Fantasy Draft Class (meaning minor leaguers for keeper leagues)
-Thoughts on Alexei Ramirez 2009 & beyond.

lackey has been better than sabathia since sabathia “figured it out.”

i’d be happy if someone (else) picked sabathia first in a draft right now, but that’s because i’d take the better pitcher after him.

TD – I worry Bedard is so selfishly concerned about his next big contract, he refuses to pitch through any minor ailment. That said – yes, I’d buy low on him right now.

    Definitely selling high on Saunders.

Considering Jeff Clement’s presence and Johjima’s start this year, his recent three-year deal was puzzling to say the least. I’m pretty worried about him and am pessimistic moving forward. See what you can get for him. He’s looked pretty brutal at the plate all year long.

Pedro Alvarez should be a star and has a clear path to the majors, but I’m really big on Buster Posey – huge bat and plays catcher. Like Justin Smoak a lot too.

Alexei Ramirez should be solid, but he needs to bulk up to develop more power and he hasn’t really ran much in the past. He plays in a great ballpark tho, and he raked in Cuba, so I like him decently enough.

Russ – Hard to argue against Lackey at this point. He’s the man.

    Lackey or webb going forward?
Should Francouer be dropped in all formats or what?

I usually side with NL pitchers over AL, but with the way Webb has thrown over the past month, there has to be at least a modicum of concern his previous high workloads are taking a toll. Lackey was injured, but he’s more fresh now after taking time off. He’s obviously not going to keep up this pace, but I think I’d give Lackey the ever-so-slight edge. It’s a close call though.

If your league is shallow – like 10-12 teams with three OF spots, then it’s fine to drop Francoeur. If not, I’d def. (try to) remain patient and keep him.

Blanton is killing me. At first I was just upset over the loss of trade value, but now that the A’s are hanging in the race despite some of their injuries (all hail King Harden, the pride of Canada!), he’s hurting them every way possible. It’s weird though, because he looks so good, and just falls apart. If you were watching his start against the Giants, he looked really on for the first 3 innings, and then he goes into the stretch and everything completely falls apart. It’s horrible timing, because if we could trade Blanton, then Gaudin could come from the pen into the rotation and potentially offer greater upside (better K rate, worse control, but higher GB%). I’d hate to know what Beane had been offered for Blanton last year, as I’m sure it would be excruciatingly painful to know what could have been. I still think Harden and Duscherererererer could be traded, but damn, what a missed opportunity.

I hear ya on all accounts. You know what else sucks, Fautino de los Santos’ injury. Brett Anderson is the real deal though.

hi, i have javier vazquez and even though the white sox look good i also have bad feeling on him, any ideas on pitchers to trade him for——-in a keeper league——thanks again randy

Despite what I said, def. make sure you get value for Vazquez – talk up his 2007 season, high K rate, the Sox in first place, etc. and go after SPs like Billingsley, J. Shields, J. Chamberlain, Cain. It’s really tough to gauge since every league is so different, so if you think you need to aim lower and none of those work, come back to me. But that’s a good starting point.

I want to see the ink dry on the contract before I count on Inoa…but I’m really excited if they’re spending money internationally again. That’s been Beane’s biggest problem the last 5 years – ignoring an area that had been so bountiful before (Tejada). Start spending some of that Fremont $$!

    WTF B-dizzle!?!?
I think it would have been nice to know he was leaving before the draft. I can’t stand the thought of Monta playing point full-time. They better find some way to get a legit PG, though I’m not sure about offering Arenas a huge deal either (but you could certainly do worse).

Fremont…like the Inoa contract, I’ll believe it when I see it. Ground hasn’t been broken, and the schedule keeps slipping.

hi again, some more thoughts i have, i have jose lopez and am thinking of moving him, i have alexei ramirez what do you think of lopez——-randy i could maybe trade hom to a guy that needs a 2nd basemen and get delmon young or john danks, or hochevar, one thought is lopez and greg smith for young and hochevar

    Nolasco is looking good.

    David Dejesus is.. laughable.

Randy – I would not do the Vazquez/Burrell for Cain/DeJesus deal. Too big of an OF downgrade.

It’s a pretty good time to deal Jose Lopez. He has solid counting stats b/c where he’s hit in the lineup, but he doesn’t give you much power or speed. And Alexei Ramirez gives you more upside moving forward anyway. If you can somehow package Lopez for Delmon Young, I’d def do that deal.

Keith – Devastating Baron Davis news. He can be such a difference maker when he puts his mind to it – unlike Arenas, he’s also interested in playing defense. That said, Arenas is a perfect fit for this system and it’s horrible he left in the first place (the 2nd round contract rule was basically changed in the NBA purely b/c of his situation in G. State). If Davis left b/c of Don Nelson, then find a new coach.

Yeah I hear ya regarding Fremont, I hadn’t heard any news at all.

  25. RotoScoop Avatar

I think I sold high on Joe Saunders – he sold high on JD Drew – and he bought low on B. Myers. I really (honestly) didn’t think Myers was going to the pen or Triple-A at the time. Myers had a very solid K rate still, and although Drew was awesome in June – he’s still an injury risk and not a huge help in HRs or SBs. That said, as of now (meaning Myers’ demotion), I’m glad I did the deal. But really, I wouldn’t have done it if not for my excess SPs.
