The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

Homer Bailey needs to be owned in NL-only leagues, of course, but he’s unlikely to be a big help in mixed leagues anytime soon. He gave up just two earned runs during his season debut Thursday, but he wasn’t very impressive doing so, posting a 1:4 K:BB ratio and typically topping out at 91-92 mph. He’s still got nice long-term potential because of that curveball, but his 55:31 K:BB ratio over 69.1 Triple-A innings this season suggests he’s far from ready to consistently get major league hitters out.

Somewhat quietly, Milton Bradley is having a fantastic season. His 1.050 OPS leads the American League, and while he’s playing a bit over his head, it’s not some huge fluke, since he posted a 1.004 OPS while playing for the Padres last year. Hitting cleanup in Texas’ lineup and ballpark, there’s potential for massive counting stats, and he even has the ability to do more running. However, we are talking about someone who has averaged 86 games per season over his eight-year career, so he’s one of the most injury-prone players of his generation. He’s basically the perfect sell-high candidate.

Over his last four starts, Cliff Lee has a 6.62 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP, quadrupling his season ERA in the process. Still, it’s not exactly time to jump ship, since his schedule was extremely difficult during that stretch, and it was accompanied by a 21:8 K:BB ratio.

There’s no one in minor league baseball with a higher ceiling than Rick Porcello.

Alexei Ramirez needs to be owned in AL-only and deep leagues. He’s solidified his spot in the White Sox’s lineup thanks to five multi-hit games over the past nine contests. Ramirez won’t run a ton, but he’s got good power for a middle infielder, and he plays in a ballpark that will only help in that department. He led the Cuban league in home runs last season.

Barry Bonds is losing sleep at night with Joe Mauer’s recent power display. Speaking of Bonds, MLB teams do realize he’s currently unemployed, right?

Chien-Ming Wang has gotten absolutely tattooed over his last four starts, seeing his ERA increase from 2.90 all the way to 4.26 by allowing 22 runs over 23.2 innings. While his strikeout rate has improved this season, he’s also walking more batters than ever, and while typically among the league-leaders in OPS against, he’s served up three homers over that four-game span. It’s probably just a small blip on the radar, but he looks awfully hittable right now.

The Cubs lead MLB in runs scored, and unsurprisingly, rank first in OPS. Yes, that stat is the best indicator of performance.

B.J. Upton hasn’t exactly lived up to the lofty expectations, but that’s almost exclusively in the HR department, and he’s actually improved his game significantly this season. His contact rate has jumped way up from last year, and he’s walking an impressive 16 percent of his plate appearances. Upton’s BABIP is once again sky-high (.391), but he was typically .350-plus in the minors, and he’s become much more aggressive on the base paths. The home runs will come.

The Rays, Astros, Red Sox, Mets and Giants are the five teams with the most steals in baseball this season, in that order. Speed is obviously a prerequisite, but opportunity is equally important in SB totals, so it’s good to know these teams clearly have an aggressive philosophy this season. The Pirates, meanwhile, rank dead last with just 16 thefts on the year.

David Price disagrees with your assessment of Rick Porcello’s upside.

I hear ya. Love Price’s potential as well. One thing’s for sure, Price is wayy ahead of Porcello time-wise.

Yeah I want to go on record as preferring Price as well. I think I would also take Steven Strasburg, who, while not technically in the “minors”, has a reasonably decent shot of making the bigs before Porcello.

I would also like to see more of Jake McGee, Julio Teheran and Jarrod Parker before making a hard and fast determination.

One thing to consider is that Price has already dealt with arm woes. Probably won’t amount to anything, but that is a factor. I like McGee a lot too. and fellow TB hurler Jeremy Hellickson currently has a 69:5 K:BB ratio! That franchise is absolutely loaded, not to mention they had the No. 1 pick in today’s draft. Ridiculous.

And Dreamweapon, I never thanked you for your thorough and excellent advice on plasma/LCD TVs. Helpful. I was def. leaning toward LCD too. I think I’m going to buy one within a week.

Im in for price too. I dafted him in a league this year with the hopes of keeping him next year.
I don’t know if I can bring myself to trade away milton bradley. I proably should though.
Although furcal has yet to come back, I am not super psyched about my furcal-cliff lee trade yet.
What am I supposed to do with that waste of a #1 waiver claim, kershaw?

Unless someone’s arm falls off, the only way we’ll know who wins this argument is at least five years from now. But I’m big on Price too.

I’m not ready to say the Kershaw claim was a complete waste after three starts, two of which he allowed two runs. It’s no surprise he’s struggling with command, but I’d still hold onto him at this point. Could you have used it on J. Bruce instead?

If I could have grabbed bruce, I would have. The thing that stinks is that I wasn’t even high on Kershaw, but figured that I had to put in the claim. He has absolutely no trade value right now, so I just have to stick with him, and endure the pain.

Cool beans–which one are you going for?

BTW–I just read an article by Nate Silver on BP which was posted yesterday, regarding PECOTA projections for several of last year’s first-round picks. He was actually extremely negative on Porcello, surprisingly, noting “[s]triking out a batter an inning is really sort of a minimum for someone who wants to be considered an elite pitching prospect. Porcello has struggled to strike out half that many, with 36 Ks in his 62 2/3 IP.” His top comp is, horrifyingly, Jon Garland (and Gil Meche was the only other guy on the comp list I know).

Hmmmm. They weren’t super high on Parker, either, due to his lack of a clear out pitch.

On the bright side, they seem to like Bumgarner. All this pitching an no bats. Does Sabean truly just not have Doug Melvin’s phone number or something?

First time I have done this. Hope it’s an appropriate question and well received:

I just dealt Kerry Wood (1 yr contract), Michael Bowden (ML contract) & Dallas McPherson (ML contrcat) in a keeper league for Eric Bedard (3 yr contract).

16-teams, keeper league, 75 year contract cap.

I ask the question, because there are 3 objections in trade vote process (7 no votes = overturn trade) already. I am amazed as we are supposed to object if there is collusion. So, 3 owners think the swap is colluded?

A FEW FACTS: I won league league last year & I know several owners knocked on the door of the team that had Bedard in the past two weeks.

Wondering if deal is slanted and/or if there is maybe something else going on.

Thoughts? Looking for your honest assessment of the deal. Thanks.

Donald – I pointed out Kershaw’s flaws – his age, his command problems, his inability to pitch past 5th innings in Triple-A, etc., but still, that upside was worth it in my opinion. Maybe he continues to be mediocre, but I wouldn’t be kicking myself for using a No. 1 waiver priority on baseball’s best pitching prospect.

Dreamweapon – I just moved – still unpacking boxes, getting satellite/internet took priority, etc., so I haven’t made the TV decision yet, but I’m going to go LCD around 47-50 inches.

Porcello’s lack of Ks is def. not a great sign, but his stuff is very good, and he would have been a top-3 pick last year if not for Scott Boras. He’s young, but I admit more Ks would be nice. Madison (not a) Bumgarner is the real deal.

Shockingly, it appears the Giants did a great job with the Draft, taking a bunch of hitters early, including the SOD – Buster Posey.

TD – Most certainly an appropriate question. I like this deal quite a bit for you, but in keeper leagues, vetoes should become much more difficult (and for the most part, I agree, they should really only happen if collusion is involved, even in redraft leagues). I have seen much more ridiculous deals in the 2 keeper leagues I play in this year – I mean, D. McPherson currently has 19 homers and a 1.012 OPS. And it’s not like Bedard is pitching all that great.

Don’t get me wrong – when you consider the contracts – you are winning this deal by a sizable margin, but if there is no collusion, then it should be allowed in my opinion.

Posey should be fine (although, and not that this matters at all, having seen an interview with him on Thursday, he appears to have all the charisma of a bran muffin)–as an owner of the “prospect rights” to Tim Beckham I was just relieved he went to Tampa and not Pittsburgh or KC, where talent goes to die. Speaking of Giants prospect bats, whatever happened to Marcus Sanders? I thought he was supposed to be the second coming of Chone Figgins a couple of years ago, now you never hear anyone even whisper his name.

Sorry about that fat bastard Ponson. Maybe, if he can catch on with another team somehow, he’ll learn to keep his skull out of the way of the team captain’s fist. Hahaha, classic. I would have loved to have been a fly on that wall.

I agree that it ultimately probably doesn’t matter, but I personally do sometimes let interviews, personality, apparent intelligence level, etc. influence my opinion of an athlete. Of course, Barry Bonds basically single-handedly destroys that theory, but it can still be applicable in other cases. So the Posey interview isn’t great news, but his 1.500 OPS as a catcher in college baseball doesn’t hurt. Speaking of agents – Posey might have been this year’s top pick if not for his contract demands.

Not sure what happened to M. Sanders, but he’s done for.

Ya, looks like Ponson won’t win the Cy Young after all!

I’m not sure how I missed the plasma/lcd conversation, but I wholeheartedly agree, gotta go with lcd. no reflections and you can see it clearly even from extreme angles. I have a 46 inch aquos, and am very happy with it.

But good to hear Donald, I’m def. getting an LCD over a plasma.
