The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

Ryan Howard is on pace to strike out a shocking 234 times this season, which would shatter the MLB-record he already holds. He’s still an excellent buy-low option, as his current .231 BABIP is well below his career level (.353). And as for real baseball, strikeouts are often overstated in how much worse they are than any other out.

Speaking of strikeouts, Mark Reynolds is batting just .212/.305/.231 during 52 at-bats in May. He hasn’t homered since April 25. He’s still likely established himself as the team’s No. 1 option at third base for the most part, but he’s picked a bad time to slump with Chad Tracy’s imminent return. That situation could easily turn into a timeshare. And fast.

Where has Alex Rios’ power gone? The nine steals are plenty helpful in fantasy leagues, but he hasn’t left the yard since May 1, leaving him on pace to finish the season with just 10 long balls. At age 27, Rios should be entering his physical prime, but a .376 slugging percentage won’t get it done. When you consider he slugged just .369 last September and hit only four home runs over his final 245 at-bats last season, there’s at least some cause for concern. And to think, the Giants actually entertained dealing Tim Lincecum for him.

If only for the sake of my LABR team, can someone please give Dallas McPherson a chance? He strikes out too much to be a big on-base guy, but his power is legit. A recent three-homer game has left him with a season line of .297/.396/.659 with 15 bombs in just 138 Triple-A at-bats. Admittedly, he’s playing in a terrific environment for hitters, but I find it hard to believe a 27-year-old left-handed hitting third baseman with this kind of power can’t help a major league team. I’m talking to you, Sabean.

Has there ever been a clearer example of addition by subtraction regarding Andruw Jones’ injury?

Since I had Spurs over Celtics as my preseason NBA Finals prediction, I might as well stay the course with the Conference Finals. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if either team lost. And how about the Bulls getting the No. 1 pick in the draft? Who do they take there? This makes Mike D’Antoni’s foolish decision to coach the Knicks instead of the Bulls look even worse. That is, until LeBron goes to NY in a couple of years.

I’m completely unconcerned with Miguel Cabrera’s lackluster start at the plate. Some are worried he’ll become too complacent after signing a long-term deal, but a new set of pitchers in the American League probably has more to do with the slow start. His current .303 BABIP is well below his career level (.358). He needs to be treated like a top-8 player during trade talks.

Farewell Mike Piazza. Your 1997 season – .362, 40 HRs, 124 RBI, 104 runs, 5 SBs – has to be considered one of the most valuable in the history of fantasy baseball.

It might be obvious, but Clint Barmes is someone to sell-high right now. There’s plenty to talk up – his extremely hot start, Coors Field, his 2005 season. However, this is someone with a career .753 OPS in the minors and has been caught stealing on 50 of his 147 attempts. Hitting atop the Rockies’ lineup in that ballpark might lead to a solid middle infielder all year long, but with a .386 BABIP, it’s safe to assume his value is peaking.

Free Andy LaRoche! I think his current .300/.506/.560 line at Triple-A proves he’s sufficiently recovered from the fluke thumb injury he suffered during spring training. Problem is, Blake DeWitt is playing out of his head. In the end, it’s a good problem for the Dodgers to have, but at some point, LaRoche needs to get a chance in Los Angeles.

Can I get some love for another Cabrera? I watched most of today’s Yankees-Orioles farce and D-Cab looked thoroughly dominant. Continually ahead in counts, plenty of weakly hit ground balls, and extremely efficient–I think he could easily have gone the distance….he was at 85 pitches and his manager let him warm up for the 8th but came out and brought him back to the dugout before the inning actually began. It seemed like a pretty easy talk, they were laughing through the exchange. D-Cab the perpetual caterpillar is becoming quite the little butterfly. If he’s available in any league, I think you need to run like hell to grab him. By the time he gets that first 10 K game, the cat will long since have been out of the bag.

I cannot believe the Bulls got that pick. They have to take Beasley. They have to. But they’re dumb so they’ll take Rose. Anyway, I don’t think D’Antoni was foolish for that decision. Jerry Reinsdorf is a straight up tool and one of the worse, most overbearing owners in all of professional sport. I mean, maybe Little Stein, Al Davis or Roman Abramovich at Chelsea are worse–MAYBE. But maybe not. Despite reports in every national media outlet that the Knicks intended to make him an “enormous offer” which started breaking BEFORE the Bulls interview, Reinsdorf STILL didn’t commit to him or even make him an offer, he just implied that perhaps at some point in the future they would consider him for the job. He also told D’Antoni that he “wouldn’t deal with coaches’ agents” and made it clear that he wasn’t about to compete with the Knicks or anyone else on salary. He basically dared D’Antoni to go out and take another job. So he did, and now Reinsdorf is ass out. He never should have fired Skiles, he wasn’t the problem. They’ll get some borderline guy and finish with about 40-45 wins and a 7 or 8 seed in the East, maybe win one playoff game next year. Which, of course, is pretty much Reinsdorf’s goal anyway.

DCab’s the man. I’d like nothing better than to see him cash in on that winning lottery ticket he’s been holding…Good points about D’Antoni and the Bulls. First off, I can’t blame the guy for taking all that money. Not at all. Secondly, LeBron is a legitimate opportunity down the road. Also, he now has nowhere to go but up. However, Chicago’s roster is perfect for his system, whereas NY’s might be the least compatible in the NBA. And now he could’ve added Beasley or Rose!

who should i look at getting in return for barmes? my choices at SS are barmes or yuniesky. i’m good at 2B (polanco/pedroia), but i wouldn’t mind selling high on barmes.

As a kid who grew up in Cleveland, comments like “That is, until LeBron goes to NY in a couple of years” are infuriating. Comments about CC too. I point to the Gasol trade as to what is wrong with the NBA and to the Yankees & Boston as to what broken with MLB. The rich keep getting richer. Whatever.

Also, I wonder if DeWitt is playing out of his head. He seems to be pretty legit to me.

First off, after the spurs were down 0-2, you posted your convictions of their winning the series. I agreed, and placed a wager for them to win in 7, so thanks for that nugget.

    Dcabb is on fire.

Can the indians really send down laffey once westbrook comes back? the kid is sporting a 1.35 era.

All things being equal, would you prefer Brandon Web or Grady Sizemore? Am I crazy to trade size for webb? Obviously a lot depends on who else I have, but that gets too complicated for this space.

Russ – I like Barmes more than Yuniesky, so if you look to deal him, make sure you get a SS in return. That also makes pulling off a deal that much tougher. If you can somehow turn him into a S. Drew or Y. Escobar (as long as he’s not too injured from last night’s collision), I’d do that, but in your case (since you are relying on him at SS), it might make sense to just stand pat. He certainly can be serviceable.

Tyler Durden – I hear ya regarding the rich getting richer. I def. don’t want to see LeBron leave Cleveland. Hopefully they can get him some decent teammates soon. DeWitt was an early draft pick, so maybe what he’s doing is legit. I didn’t think he was ready to produce like this, but he’s been very solid.

FYI: The Indians are talking deal with several teams because of Laffey. First choice would be to deal Byrd to get a piece that could parlay into a later deal to fill a need. Option two would be to deal Laffey or a package of players (Miller, Laffey, Sowers, Barfield, Marte) to get a player or players they can use now. Targets I have heard include Atkins or Holliday and Tribe hopes to get COL to throw in Fuentes. It’s all blue sky right now, but info comes from source I trust.

Donald – Good call with the Spurs bet. I should have done the same at the time…That’s not a crazy trade at all. Plenty people argue Webb vs. Santana right now, and Johan was a typical first round pick. Webb’s not going to keep up this pace of wins, obviously, but he’s worth an elite bat like Sizemore. My answer would be if you need pitching more than hitting, then go for it.

TD – Interesting. Dealing Byrd would make sense. And I’d like to see what Marte would do with another opportunity.

  11. Tyler Durden Avatar
    Tyler Durden

Yeah, Byrd is easiest to deal and several teams need arms. However, I heard when COL stepped into the picture, things changed for Tribe on the trade front. Also to note: CLE and COL have a good history of trading. I really think Atkins & Fuentes could happen, but it would cost the Indians some promising prospects.

Shiiit, I’ma hire Tex Winters, too. I know he has always been loyal to Phil, but I am talking long paper here. Scroll long. He can’t resist the cheese, or his own personal VIP lounge at the 40/40. Shiit, that’s why I throw them diamonds in the air, because it is really just a triangle symbol for Tex. Ya know? Ha-ha.

WOW…you really went out on a limb picking the two preseason favorites to make the finals

and it will be the Lakers and the Celtics like the great one predicted mid season

rotoscoop man says “Miguel Cabrera – He needs to be treated like a top-8 player during trade talks.”

TOP 8??? what??? ??? He isnt even a top 8 infielder…and thats without the outfielders and SP…

come on rotoscoop man..i expect better from you

“TOP 8??? what??? ??? He isnt even a top 8 infielder…and thats without the outfielders and SP…”

I think his point was that by year’s end he will be Top 8, where he always is. YTP points is great when you have guys on your roster and/or are selling hig, but, when dealing with and for guys like Miggy, you can pretty much ignore YTD points. If you can find someone ‘selling low’ on Miggy, pounce.

    Even TheMediocreFantasyPlayer can understand that.

  16. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Young Hov – That’s pretty funny – the diamond symbol is really just expressing his love for the triangle offense. Tex Winters is the man.

  17. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Picking Spurs vs. Celtics wasn’t going out on a limb, but there were plenty different thoughts at the time. It’s easy to forget now, but Boston wasn’t the heavy favorite in the East at the time, they were still a big unknown as to how those trades would result. Also, the Suns were favored in the West. Lakers could easily beat S.A. tho.

  18. RotoScoop Avatar
    RotoScoop

Miguel Cabrera was typically drafted 5th in most fantasy leagues this year. What’s changed since then? Not sure what type of leagues you play in, but it’s doubtful there are more than 10 players I could deal and get MCab in return for in any of the ones I’m in. After six weeks of slightly disappointing play, how far have you knocked him down? If it’s such a joke to consider him top-8, where do you have him? Top-25? Top-50?

This doesnt even include SP like Webb, Santana who I rather have over Cabrera…hes very good..but he wasnt top 5 in any of my leagues..maybe he was top 5 in your leagues because you made the mistake of taking him so high…He has never had over 120 rbi…never had over 34 HR…he was switching leagues with all new pitchers in a bigger park…HE IS NOT TOP 8 NOW…BEFORE THE SEASON…GOING FORWARD…AT THE END OF THE SEASON HE WONT BE…your lost if you think he is and it just proves my point that you have no idea what you are saying..

like I said you set up the fantasy league…baseball, football, basketball..i dont care…Im in anytime, anywhere…and i will squash you like a bug

  20. RotoScoop Avatar

I actually didn’t take Cabrera in any league this year, but his ADP was 5th. RBI is a stat that’s totally independent of skill level – and leaving Florida for Detroit should probably help him in that area. Only Albert Pujols has had as good of a start to a career as Cabrera, and at age 25, it’s safe to assume he’ll only get better.

Anyway, I’ll probably set up a RotoScoop fantasy football league, if for no other reason than to shut you up.

I’d take him 6th or 7th on that LIST you provided and that’s because I am not going hindsight 20/20 like you and saying I’d take Pujols or Berk before Miggy.

Sorry — to clarify by “before Grady or Ortiz or Howard?” I actually meant AFTER. I would never take any of those 3 before I took Miggy.

Fantasy player. Take a look at Baseball Reference.com . The site lists player comparables historically. At this point Miguel Cabrera best comparable at his age is Hank Aaron. Top 8, perhaps not this year overall, but he is still a top 15 property minimum and will probably earn top 10 dollars from this point forward. Hindsight is 20/20 wouldn’t you say. Never had over 34 homers or 120 RBI. Look at the park he played in. Look at the OBP of the players he played with. The Marlins struck out more last year than any other team. He will get hot. That is a given. He is too gifted a player to finish with his average. I would not be surprised if he hits .350 from here on out and that would make him a top 8 player I think. The Tigers entire team slumping was one of the biggest surprises in recent memory. I can’t wait to drop my nuts on your head. Rotoscoop league on the way.

W00t, Hamilton with another steal today. That’s two games in a row with a swipe. If this kid can sprinkle in 15-20 steals, what are the chances he goes in the 1st round next year? 105%?
