The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

It’s too late in most leagues, but Felipe Lopez needs to be picked up. Thursday marked the seventh straight start for him, so he’s now entrenched in the lineup. He’s not going to help your batting average, but there’s some solid stolen base and power potential from the middle infielder. RFK really limited Lopez over the past two years, so there’s some upside here.

Pitching with a damaged shoulder and soon to turn 41 years old, John Smoltz has been as good as ever this season. A 31:6 K:BB ratio over 23 innings with no homers allowed is about as dominant as it gets. A favorable schedule has helped, and he’s going to remain an injury risk, but fantasy owners might as well hold onto Smoltz and enjoy the ride.

David Ortiz is having an awful year, but he is on pace to still finish with 135 RBI.

In this installment of the clueless Joe Torre, did he really have Andruw Jones batting second and Nomar Garciaparra hitting cleanup Wednesday? I really think Major League Baseball managers might collectively be the dumbest profession in the United States. Want another example? Charlie Manuel decided to bring Cole Hamels out for the eighth inning Wednesday even though he had already thrown 118 pitches. I’m also not too big on Lou Piniella’s decision to skip Rich Hill’s turn in the rotation for inferior options like Jason Marquis and Ryan Dempster.

How is Barry Bonds unemployed right now? This is a national crisis and an outrage that deserves an inquest.

It’s pretty obvious Jeremy Bonderman is pitching with an injury. I was down on him entering the year, and he’s been even worse than I feared. Issuing 21 walks through 27.1 innings is staggering. Expect a DL-stint to arrive shortly.

Lance Berman is unconscious right now, batting .325 with six long balls and four steals. He’s also drawn seven walks to just one strikeout over the last seven games. He’s not going to suddenly steal 30 bases, but the Astros are running wild this year, so a career-high in the category should be expected. With an improved lineup also around him, Berkman is in line to obliterate last year’s numbers.

Jimmy Fallon to replace Conan O’Brien once he takes over for Jay Leno? Get ready for Chevy Chase, Part 2.

The Vikings and Chiefs trade looks win-win to me. Minnesota’s defense is going to be a force adding the league’s best pass rusher in his prime next to the NFL’s best interior. That team is a quarterback away from winning the NFC. Of course, quarterback is the most important position in football. I also applaud Dallas’ decision to go after Pacman Jones. Sure, there’s plenty of risk involved, but any time you can get a top-5 defensive player for a fourth rounder, you do so. When on the field, Jones is more valuable than any player in this year’s NFL Draft.

I’m beginning to think Francisco Liriano isn’t 100 percent recovered from his Tommy John surgery.

I would say that Brett Favre becoming the next cover boy of “Madden” would solve the jinx problem, but there’s always the chance he comes back. Still, it’s pretty fitting.

I’m not saying I predicted Manny Corpas losing the closer’s job mid-April, but last year’s 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings didn’t exactly scream dominant stopper. The .260 BABIP and .85 strand rate did, however, suggest he was lucky. He’ll turn it around, but this is another example of how fluid closing situations become because of small sample sizes.

Look Look. There’s a picture of me on ESPN.com. How exciting!

Morgues should be preparing for Gary Sheffield’s arrival, because he looks just about done. At age 39, his body is simply failing him. That said, American League pitchers beware, the rest of this Tigers lineup has officially awoken.

Might as well take a flier on Eric Hinske. His .327/.403/.727 line can’t be taken too seriously, but remember, the former ROY was a pretty good prospect back in the day. And after what Carlos Pena did last year in a similar situation in Tampa Bay, Hinske can’t be completely ignored. He might be a pretty good asset against right-handers this year.

I am totally f-ed. I have schef on my team. I also have bonderman on my team. Both guys are too useless to use/trade, but have too much potential (in my opinion) to drop. I wouldn’t mind moving one to grab felipe lopez (who would not crack my starting lineup). Any thoughts on how I should handle this one?

I picked up fuentes yesterday morning. I immediately got am email from a league mate saying that he was picking up fuentes, and when he clicked ‘submit’, fuentes was on my team. Making a move mere seconds before an opponent is very satisfying.

I remember telling you before the season to stay away from Bonderman and you argued with me! I’m sure I’ve been wrong about plenty too. I just called Cliff Lee a sell-high and that he’d never have higher value and he pitches a complete game shutout yesterday.

I agree tho, I still think they have too much potential to drop outright unless it’s a crazy shallow league. I’d personally drop Bonderman over Sheff, but I suggest you hold onto both.

Ya it is satisfying. And it’s the worst thing ever when you are on the other end – see the guy available, debate who to drop for a couple secs, click submit, and then rejected.

    Dalton,
What do you make of Cliff Lee? I ask because I have watched him this season and am wondering if you have seen him pitch. I already traded him in one league in a deal for Sabathia, but am wondering about the other league I have him in and am starting to wonder if it’s smart to just keep him. Not to sway your opinion in any way, but he looks like a different pitcher this year — and I’m not talking about the boxscores.

you did urge me to stay away from bonderman. I should have listened. I think I said that he had burned me before, and I was prepared to go down with the ship.

Agree with the others, but skipping Hill was a good move. Brewers slaughter lefties.

This is hilarious, I went into the comments section with two agendas: (1) laughing about the guy (I couldn’t remember who it was) who was all about Bonderman a month or two back–hey Trump! [g]; and (2) discussing the Cliff Lee situation. Both are already well in hand, I see. Gotta love this site, it kicks ASS.

Anyway, more on Lee–I held him despite your prior warning b/c I was in desperate straits this week for starting pitching (I’m a Bedard/Sheets/Liriano owner in this particular league, so go ahead and laugh), and knew I needed at least SOMETHING. God be praised that I managed to finally make a good call and sit Liriano for Lee. I saw most of his game last night as I was flipping back and forth on Extra Innings b/t that game and Lincecum’s mini-rampage (if only the kid could master his control and start going 8 deep, it’d be Liriano ’06 all over again), and what I saw impressed me. He (Lee) is working with a boatload of confidence right now, he was able to shrug off little miscues (like Shoppach inexcusably allowing a high pitch to bounce off his glove to the backstand, permitting a runner to go from 2nd to 3rd) without a second thought. Solid pace–the second game flew by after the first one took like 3.5 hrs. Relying a lot on the high heat, which is a little scary as he got several fastballs up in b/t the belt and letters, but it’s working right now b/c guys are just not able to get around on him, hence the high K rate. Also keeping nice counts, I didn’t see many 3-2 or even 2-2 affairs that I can recall.

There is no way this can be real, I get that–he is unequivocally THE #1 SP in fantasy right now on the numbers, and he just isn’t that guy. But there’s _something_ there, at least. I know his competition hasn’t been great, but at the same time, he did face twice in a week, which is always a recipe for disaster with any team (see Cain, Matt v. St. Louis recently) as the had him fresh in their minds, and 3 of his 4 masterpieces have been on the road, which should count for something.

I have every intention of moving him, but his next match is against Seattle, at home, meaning another beatdown could easily be in store for his owners, and his stock will only rise higher in the meanwhile. I’m wondering, what kind of return should we be seeing for Lee at this point? Sabathia is obviously great, but probably beyond my reach as my leaguemates are too patient for those kind of capers. I’m not thrilled with Posada’s health so far….I’m wondering if a Lee/Posada for V-Mart, Martin or McCann sort of deal might be in order? Would you tag-team him with a guy like Cain if it meant getting a Kazmir or a Hamels in return? What about a Manny Parra, if it was a keeper and Lee was a regular, whereas Parra came with two years’ worth of free keeps outside of the normal seven-player quota?

This is a weird situation. It’s tough to truly “sell high” on a guy with such a sketchy history, but there is no incentive to move him, given his current form and upcoming schedule, unless you get a premium return. Tough one.

(mean to say “he did face OAKLAND twice in a week”)…..long day already. Very, very long.

Tyler Durden – I have not watched Lee pitch this year. A 29:2 K:BB ratio over 31 innings is just plain ridiculously good. And this is a former prospect, so it’s not completely out of the blue. I mean, he has a 0.28 ERA! He is getting somewhat lucky, but it’s tough to argue with the results right now – I’m starting to believe. Unless you can truly sell-high and can get great talent in return, might as well keep him.

finite24 – I hear ya. That reasoning (the Brewers kill left-handed pitching) does make it more reasonable.

Dreamweapon – My easy answer is that if you can get a nice return, dealing Lee now at his peak would make sense. However, he’s reached the point of me believing that this isn’t some fluke where he’ll come crashing down. No starter is ever going to finish with a sub-1 ERA, obviously, but he could be in store for a very nice year.

Lee/Posada for one of the big-3 catchers makes sense. And before you ask for that, I’d even have him throw in a useful part in the deal as well, and see if he bites. I probably wouldn’t do the Lee/Cain ones, especially with Kazmir’s injury worries. But that’s probably b/c I value Cain pretty highly. I think you could also get the Parra guy to throw something else in. Not just Tyler Durden above, but I’ve also heard of an AL-LABR deal that basically netted Sabathia straight up for him (before CC’s last outing). Point being, Lee is getting valued quite highly in some circles.

    Lincecum is a STUD.

Lincecum being 4-0 has to qualify as a minor miracle. That Sanchez guy ain’t looking half-bad either. Getting the Big Hurt for the minimum a year after he was their MVP is a pretty good deal for the A’s. I’ll take his bat over Sweeney’s any day. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was solid, though I could have used more male frontal nudity. I don’t think you’ll have to worry about Nomar batting cleanup anymore for a while.

It def. qualifies as a miracle. For sure a good deal for the A’s. I hope it doesn’t kill Cust’s PT tho, b/c I still think he can turn it around. Ya that was my No. 1 complaint about FSM also. Nomar just needs to retire already. Bring on Andy LaRoche.
