The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don

In my main league, I drafted Ryan Howard and David Ortiz with the first two picks. They are a combined 8-for-57 (.140), giving me a major leg up in the batting average category early on.

Dice-K looks awfully good so far. Nine walks in 18.1 innings are far too many, but 22 Ks and just eight hits allowed suggest his stuff is better than ever. With a full season under his belt, maybe he won’t fatigue like he did last year. If he improves his command, a run at the Cy Young isn’t out of the question. Then again, the same is true for a dozen other guys.

Jose Reyes has now gone 21 consecutive games without a steal, attempting just two swipes during that span. In fact, he’s been caught in five of his past nine attempts. It’s probably not something to worry about, but it’d be nice if he started running again sometime soon.

T-minus 21 days until Mario Kart drops on the Wii.

The 1962 Mets finished 40-120, the worst record ever in the modern-day schedule. I will bet anyone even-money the Giants post a worse record this season. I’ve been offered free tickets (great seats) and a ride to a game in SF next week, but unless they drastically lowered the beer prices, I’ll probably stay home and do something more entertaining instead. Like laundry.

Speaking of Bay Area teams, I’d like someone to explain something to me. As a subscriber to the MLB Extra Innings package, my “local” teams are blacked out. Well, the Oakland A’s fall under this category, yet they aren’t telecasted by my cable company quite frequently. How does this make sense? Out of 30 teams in major league baseball, the one I can’t watch on TV is the team located closest to me? Huh?

If Joe Saunders is still available on your league’s waiver wire, join a new one.

Little known fact: Cueto means Cy Young in Spanish.

Joakim Soria is a machine. Over his last 16.1 innings, he’s allowed two runs with a sparkling 22:1 K:BB ratio. I’m thinking the Padres regret leaving him unprotected in the Rule 5 draft.

I’d rather eat fast food (although barely) than ever gamble on Daniel Cabrera again. I’m throwing in the towel. I give up.

I could beat a score of 37 while bowling left-handed and blindfolded.

Todd Wellemeyer has looked good during back-to-back outings to start the year, fanning 13 batters over 12 innings. Moreover, he’s a must-start against the Littles during his next two games.

Speaking of Wellemeyer, if I hadn’t won him in FAAB in NL-only LABR thanks to a tiebreaker, Jonah Keri would have, and he was dropping Barry Zito as a result. If you’re getting dropped in a league so deep that guys are fighting over the likes of Tim Redding, Odalis Perez and Kyle McClellan, then it’s time to start sending back that paycheck.

Kosuke Fukudome and Hiroki Kuroda (is that bad to lump them together?) both look like real deals early on. Even Ichiro Suzuki hit .243/.317/.306 during his first month of major league baseball. Fukudome, meanwhile, has looked like he belongs the moment his lackluster spring ended. He still might not amount to a fantasy superstar, but with that eye at the plate, he’s going to really help the Cubs. Moreover, Kuroda looked simply fantastic during his first start. As long as he pounds that strike zone, he’s going to experience quite a bit of success this season, especially the first time teams see him.

    Bravo. Encore.

Am I an idiot to cut Longoria right now? My patience is nil in a head-to-head league where I’ve prevented myself from a revolving-door roster spot to spell injuries, etc. I’m starting to convince myself the hype is unwarranted thanks to people believing in another Ryan Braun.

    Can you convince me otherwise?

Who would you cut him for? If it was for Cueto or Volquez, yes. If it’s for David Murphy, no.

Eddie – Tyler Durden hit the nail on the head – this answer depends on whom you’d be dropping him for. There’s a very little chance Longoria does what Braun did last season – that was one of the absolute best debuts you’ll ever see. That said, I like Longoria quite a bit, and he still possesses plenty of upside.

On one hand, you hate wasting a roster spot in a H2H league where that matters. But on the other, if you think your team is bound to make the playoffs, it’s much more important to secure a player with his upside for crunch time.

    Bravo.
I have Cueto, and watched him last night. He is looking like the REAL DEAL. Great control of the fastball, and the brew crew could help but swing and miss at the slider. What are your thoughts on his trade value right now? Would you be a seller, or should I be hoping for a liriano-like year?
Jose reyes can’t steal a base, and Boss Man Jr just stole home for the second time in his career. Is the only person with a tougher name his father?
Why would you want to watch the A’s? Really, there is no way that you should have even noticed that the games weren’t avail.
I brought up Saunders a few days ago. I will rephrase and ask again… Saunders or Westbrook (I chose Westbrook at the time, and obviously Saunders is now gone, but I still want to know your thoughts).
DROP LONGORIA. If this is not a keeper league, this is looking like a wasted valuable roster spot. Drop him for anyone, the roster freedom will be worth it.

I still think Cueto is an excellent sell-high candidate right now, but of course, just make sure you get quality in return. Like Rich Hill or even better. If ppl are skeptical, sit back and enjoy the ride, b/c while he should go through some ups and downs (mainly w/ his control), he does look like the real deal and should have a very solid rookie season. It won’t be Liriano-like tho. But his stuff is legit, like you said.

I wanted to see if Travis Buck could go 0-for-600 this year.

Tough call b/w Saunders and Westbrook, as they seem very close in value. In situations like this, I usually go with the young one (Saunders), since he has more upside. Still, Westbrook looks better than ever. Give me Saunders (lots of groundballs, former high draft pick, decent K rate for a lefty, worked hard offseason), but they are fairly even.

I suppose I should’ve clarified. I ended up in this spot last week with the no. 1 waiver priority for Cueto, who I ended up dropping Volquez for instead of Longoria. Looking back it seems like it might only be a marginal improvement, but my leaguemates’ excitement over Cueto made me think he’d have much more trade value than Volquez should a need pop up.

Now that I have Jeter out for a few days it’s painful in the short term without a backup SS–someone just cut Orlando Cabrera in my 12 team league, for example, and he’d be a more than capable replacement. These little tweaks are what a revolving-door spot is so great for but it’s something I have no control over when I handcuff myself to Longo.

Ya – that type of roster flexibility for 1.5-2 months is probably more important than 4 months of Longoria, who has actually gotten off to a bad start in Triple-A. Sounds like there are decent available options as well. I like Volquez.
