Take Your Pick

Often you will find two players who are being drafted typically right around the same area and have similar price tags in auctions. Maybe both will bring back close to equal value in returns. Or, the decision could make or break your season. Leave your choice and thoughts on the matter in the comments section.

McCann – Mauer’s utter lack of power hurts. Plus, he’ll suffer some random injury which will shelve him for a month.

McCann. Mauer’s 35 HR in 1523 ABs betray him for the slapmaster he is. Those kinds of guys have value, in real baseball, and as one who owns both Morneau and Delmon on rookie contracts for two more years apiece in my dynasty league, I’m thrilled for those guys that they have him in the lineup to knock in, but he’s not going to win anyone any fantasy leagues (unless maybe it’s a deep AL-only 2-catcher type affair). I know people look at that sweet swing and think about the possibilities, but that is a LOT of career ABs for such a lousy HR total. The guy is almost 25 years old. At some point it’s time to stop projecting what might be, and accept what actually is.

I still have faith in Mauer. Sure, I agree McCann is more likely to outhomer him, but Mauer won a batting title already for crying out loud. He can also throw in 10 SBs. This is a close call, b/c I like them both this season.

Yeah, I know he’s a draw, but Freddy freakin’ Sanchez won a batting title the same year, and he’s still a fantasy cow patty, despite the 2B eligibility. I just don’t put a whole ton of effort in targeting AVG guys, I prefer to just avoid sub-.280ish hitters and let the the law of averages take effect. The SBs are something, I guess, but this year this is just so much cheap-ass speed available (Pierre’s stock is down, but far beyond that there is Taveras, Bourn, Rajai Davis, Barlett, and scads of other guys who could swipe 30 or 40 (or more) just hanging out there during the draft, for rounds and rounds on end. I just get the sense they’re worth less this year in general. Granted, there aren’t a lot of sure things at catcher, so I can see his value still being elevated despite his profoundly disappointing ’07 campaign, but McCann’s like down year was just so much better, for the purposes of the kinds of teams I like to build. Factor in the injury issue, it just seems like a slam dunk to me. Who knows, maybe he’ll finally bust out and blow some minds with a 30/15 year and I’ll be left looking even stupider than usual.

love the “take your pick” idea. Awesome way to stimulate participation.

This is a toughie. I still think Mauer’s athleticism and some possible untapped potential make him a better value on draft day.

If there was a million dollars on the line, I’d go with McCann. He seems like the safer selection.

Cool, glad you like it dchase. The McCann/Mauer one is particularly tough.
