Obviously, my aggressive M. Barber ranking is contingent upon Julius Jones leaving through free agency, which I fully expect to happen.

Not fooled by the two-week emergence of Laurence Maroney?

Yeah, I can’t blame ya. Still, I’m tempted to keep him….

Good list. Only thing that stands out (in a bad way) to me is how low Portis is injured. If you are going to speculate positively about Barber & Drew & Grant, why speculate negatively on Portis?

I suspect you’ll site age and potential injury as to why Portis is so low, but after how he’s played this season & finished the season, I am inclined to put him higher. I could site (as you did) Jones maybe staying in Dallas, Taylor stealing carries in Jacksonville & a one-year wonder in Green Bay.

Again, I love the list, but this one slotting stands out to me.

Randy – Believe me, I wouldn’t blame anyone for passing on Jacobs – he’s the biggest risk/reward name on the list. Still, Coughlin is the new Mike Shanahan as far as running back friendly systems are concerned, and I expect Jacobs to go back to being the full-time goal line guy and only improve as a receiver next year. His 5.0 YPC this season is a pretty legit number. However, b/c of his size, leg injuries are likely to always be a problem, but if he were to play in 16 games, I’d bet he’d finish as a top-5 fantasy player. Just make sure to draft his backup.

Steve – Ya, I was tempted to put Maroney on here, but he’ll always be a sore spot for me — in the RotoWire Fantasy Football mag, I had him as the 6th RB entering the year! Ironic how he turned out to be probably the most valuable fantasy RB during the crucial Weeks 15/16 (although I bet most of his owners didn’t make it that far).

The 4.8 YPC is nice, but the way I see it, it’s pretty bad to finish with the #s he’s going to this year while staying relatively healthy on a team that’s going to end up 16-0 and with the most points scored in NFL history. That said, it’s possible Moss gets hurts next yr, and/or NE shifts offensive philosophies, but don’t forget just how unusable he was for most of this year. I’m a guy who likes to gamble tho, so I’d probably rank Maroney right after these 30. At least the 49ers’ winning streak should prevent NE from drafting D. McFadden.

Tyler Durden – I really won’t argue much with you regarding Portis. He’s actually much younger than it seems, and he rendered L. Betts completely moot this year. The 3.9 YPC is a problem (he’s struggled in that area ever since coming to Wash), but an improvement there should happen next year since their O-line was devastated by injuries this season. Hopefully Jason Campbell can improve as well. Portis does bring injury concerns, but I’d have no problem if you drafted him 10 spots higher than I listed him.

As for MJD – Do you realize Fred Taylor is about to turn 32?! That’s ancient for a RB. Jones-Drew didn’t live up to my high expectations this year, but I love him as a value pick next season after Taylor’s strong finish will be in everyone’s mind.

As for R. Grant – Totally hear you about the one-year wonder thing. In fact, I originally didn’t even have him on my list. However, his #s are ridiculous since taking over the starter’s job, and GB’s defense is legit, and A. Rodgers looks capable if Favre retires/declines. Grant’s value lies with whom the team brings in at RB during the offseason. B Jackson looked pretty bad this year.

I agree with all your points, but as I said it seems with Drew/Grant/Barber you take a half full approach, while with Portis you take a half-empty & I am not sure why.

    Just my opinion.
