Monday Morning Quarterback

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

The Ravens and Rams quarterbacks combined for a 0:6 TD:INT ratio with six sacks Sunday. Both running games got 2.5 YPC with two lost fumbles. Ugly stuff…If you can get 75 cents on the dollar for Torry Holt, do it…Mark Clayton is the new Michael Clayton.

Running back is the most fungible position in football, but it’s hard to understand how six teams passed on Adrian Peterson during the NFL Draft…Peterson’s Week 6 performance was one of the best ever, and he’s already a top-2 player at his position. The only reason he’s not the same for fantasy purposes is because of Brad Childress, who not only continues to give Chester Taylor more touches but is also putting him at unnecessary risk by having him return kickoffs.

Derek Anderson has top-10 fantasy QB written all over him – he plays for a team with a terrible defense and running game and has two terrific receivers at his side. Plus, he’s playing very well and shouldn’t have to worry about Brady Quinn as long as Cleveland remains somewhat alive in the playoff picture…Braylon Edwards has to be treated like a top-5 fantasy WR right now…Ronnie Brown is on pace to gain 2,352 yards this season.

It’s time to start benching your fantasy QB when facing the Redskins. Washington had allowed the fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks before facing Green Bay, when the team held Brett Favre to just 188 yards with a 0:2 TD:INT ratio…It’s safe to say few have had worse days than Santana Moss did Sunday, as the wideout recorded zero catches and lost a fumble that resulted in a defensive touchdown.

Maurice Jones-Tru: Nice to see MJD finally really break out, and one would think increased touches should follow. He’s simply a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball…Over the last three weeks, Kevin Walter has been targeted 7, 10 and 15 times, respectively. For as long as Andre Johnson is sidelined, Walter is a viable flex option.

The defense isn’t any good either, but the Bengals have major offensive line problems…Not only is Kenny Watson outplaying Rudi Johnson all things being equal, but Watson is a much better fit for a team seemingly constantly in hurry up/catch up mode…If I own T.J. Houshmandzadeh, there’s no way I’d trade him for Chad Johnson…With a strong defense and an improving passing game, one would think Larry Johnson can build off his strong effort Sunday. However, it also might not be a bad time to shop him around.

Take away one early pass to Kevin Curtis, who did most of the work himself thanks in large part to embarrassing tackling by the Jets, and Donovan McNabb’s day looks pretty bad once again. There’s something wrong here…Still, it was nice to see Reggie Brown rise from the dead…Kevin Curtis has tallied 77 percent of his yardage total this season in two of the five games he’s played in…Chad Pennington has a 4:1 TD:INT ratio at home and a 2:5 TD:INT ratio when playing on the road this season.

Jeff Garcia still hasn’t thrown a pick this season, but the only way he’ll be fantasy relevant is if the team’s ground game continues to struggle, something entirely possible if Sunday was any indication…Pounce on Mewelde Moore if a deal gets struck before Tuesday’s deadline…The Madden Curse strikes again? Vince Young has been awfully disappointing this season, and now he’s hurt.

The Cardinals very quickly went from having two options at quarterback to none, with apologies to Tim Rattay of course…Might as well stick with Vinny Testaverde over David Carr, right?

I don’t know what I was thinking taking the Cowboys and the points Sunday, what a mismatch that was, home underdog be damned…Tom Brady is on pace for a 56:5 TD:INT ratio this season…Do you realize that Randy Moss has just nine fewer TD catches than Terrell Owens during his career, despite being more than three years younger and basically wasting the last two years in Oakland.

I’d recommend any fantasy defense going up against Daunte Culpepper, who simply holds onto the ball far too long…LaDainian Tomlinson is going to be OK, folks.

Not sure what to make of the fact Drew Brees looked good yet Marques Colston was virtually non-existent…If Reggie Bush stays healthy, he’s a top 5-10 fantasy player…Put a fork in Shaun Alexander, he’s done. I’ve gotten plenty wrong this season, but Alexander (and Rudi Johnson) wasn’t one of them. I highly doubt any other fantasy magazine had Alexander lower than 11th, which is where I placed him in the RotoWire Fantasy Football mag…Alexander’s demise is Matt Hasselbeck’s gain, as the system continues to put up big numbers despite lacking big named receivers. He has a very good schedule from this point forward.

And now, it’s back to listening (and obsessing over) the new Radiohead. If you haven’t downloaded “In Rainbows,” you need to seriously look yourself in the mirror. After all, Radiohead’s innovative approach allows you to choose how much you want to pay for the album, literally changing the free market (and the world) in the process.

Don’t forget about that ASS Moss also totally blowing an easy catch, not only “dropping” it, but actually tipping it almost directly to Charles Woodson. That guy sucks, he is the Homeless Man’s Steve Smith. Really, really, really homeless. Like homeless in Calcutta or Lagos or something.

Bulger/V.Young/Warner – Those have been my sad starting QBs this year.

Griese/Cleo Lemon/Schaub/Garcia/Garrard/Boller – Those are the sad saps that are left. Who would you want? I’ve had negative points from the QB after totalling the last 3 weeks.

I’ll give you a better and longer answer tomorrow but if you need to decide soon, I’d go with Schaub – he’s very solid now and will be even better once Andre Johnson returns. Garrard would be my second choice.

Thanks…. I think I am going to let Young and Warner go and try to pick both guys up. Maybe that will buy some time for Bulger to show some assemblence of what I thought he might do this year. Man, having Bulger and Stephen Jackson is a killer this year.

    Excellent once again, as always.

Colston kind of worries me, but I’d rather have him than a lot of guys out there & he can be gotten cheap.

What do you think about the news about Wynn in GB. Think Jackson is really going to be forgotten?

Right on about the new radiohead. Brilliant once again, as always.

Ok.. this is my last week with severe bye issues… i’m currently the #2 team only 10 points behind the #1 team, and we’re both 5-1 going head to head this week… unfortunately, this is the week LT goes on bye…
Any waiver wire RB’s that might be worth picking up early this week? or someone i may want to follow the status of throughout the week? I’m looking at Droughns… (again return yards gain me points)… As of now I have Bush, and Dunn in there, but truly Dunn should be used in emergencies only, which may be the case this week, up against the saints maynot be a bad time to tryhim? thoughts?

MK – Looks like Andre Johnson will be back sooner than expected, so hopefully you were able to snag Schaub. The 8.3 yards per attempt is a very big and terrific number, and it suggests his modest TD total of five is somewhat fluky, so expect that number to really increase moving forward…I’d still rather Young than Garrard from here on out, however.

Tyler Durden – I agree, Colston does make for a fine buy low target, there’s a lot of upside there, and his owners may legitimately be down on him at this point.

That GB running game is a mess. Wynn is definitely the one to own now, since he not only looks to get the majority of the carries but is also the goal line guy. Still, I do expect B. Jackson to become relevant again. They drafted him four rounds higher for a reason, and the coaching staff gave him high praise during minicamps – part of the reason he was scratched last week was b/c they didn’t plan on him playing during practice week, so once he returns to practice now that he’s healthy, I do expect him to get involved in the game plan. Seems like a RBBC on a poor run blocking team, unfortunately.

Chad – Michael Bennett out there to be picked up? What about Kevin Faulk? S. Morris is out multiple weeks, and Maroney’s status is questionable….Droughns seems to be getting goal line carries, and Jacobs/Ward can’t stay healthy. Plus, with the return yardage counted and that matchup with SF, I’d probably even start him over Dunn.

    thanks 3d… always helpful

I’m nabbing droughns now… All the above are taken, i’m in a 12 team league, and most people are stashing RBs like crazy. It was down to droughns, kenton keith, or tatum bell…. fairly grim.

Yeah return yardage is adds an interesting element, i know i’ve mentioned it before, but guys like burleson, dante hall, and devin hester become fantasy monsters.

Thanks for the advice. Vince Young hasnt looked impressive and now he’s banged up. He just doesnt have receivers. I think the safer play is to hold on to Bulger who has a better shot of putting up numbers later in the year and going with a guy like Garrard now who just seems to find the end zone more often. He has a pretty impressive passer rating too… I know you are high on Vince Young but I have to call it quits on him. I already have dead weight in Bulger, Colston, and S. Jackson.
    🙁

Selvin is definitely the backup there. Depends on what he can bring you back – if you can harass the Henry owner into panicking and giving up a lot, go for it. Give me some specific offers, and I’ll give you my opinion. It looks like this Henry situation is going to take longer to figure out than originally anticipated, but Young is def. worth owning.

Does Koren Robinson have any value? I know he has potential, especially on GB, but is he starting?

And speaking of suspended WRs, is Chris Henry worth picking up?

I’m just not sure how this stuff goes down.

No to Koren Robinson, yes to Chris Henry….Not only will it take K-Rob multiple weeks to get back into game shape, GB has three WRs ahead of him on the depth chart. Plus, he’s talented, but kind of never really lived up to it.

Henry, on the other hand, is 1) better to begin with and 2) plays in a better situation. He’ll be the third option on a team forced to pass all the time b/c of their terrible defense and lack of running game. Henry had nine TDs last season in that role, and if CJ or Housh were to go down, he’d have top-10 WR upside. Plus, Cincy has an awesome fantasy playoffs sked (weeks 14-16).

Pick up Henry, but don’t bother with Robinson.
