The Scoop

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

Joe Borowski has a 5.50 ERA this season. He also has 40 saves. Again, the saves category is the silliest statistic in all of sports.

Dontrelle Winless – Since May 30, Dontrelle Willis has one win. One. He’s 1-11 over that span.

Joba Chamberlain gives the Yankees a dominant setup man they’ve been missing for years. Dude has an 18/4 K/BB ratio over 14.1 scoreless innings since getting called up to the big leagues. That’s pretty good.

If the Giants really do let Barry Bonds walk, and all signs point to this being the case, I will be more disappointed in Brian Sabean than ever before – something I didn’t think possible. The team calls Bonds, who leads his league in OPS, a “fallback option” and will be looking to address it’s offensive inefficiencies elsewhere. We could be looking at historical lows in offense in the Bay Area next year if that’s the case. Forget from a baseball standpoint, he puts butts in the seats and with a 3,000-hits mark on the horizon, it also makes zero sense from a marketing view to let the world’s greatest hitter leave. I digress.

Pat Burrell has 214 career homes runs. 41 of them have come against the Mets. In other words, nearly 20 percent of his long balls have been mashed against one franchise.

This is one of the crazier box scores I’ve seen in a while.

Peter King’s recent article ranking the NFL’s top-500 players was an excellent read – if you were looking for a good laugh. I understand he didn’t want to overemphasize the skill positions, but come on, you are trying to tell me there are 102 better players in the NFL than Terrell Owens? Ed Reed ranked 12th overall? In between SportsCenter highlights, he’s the worst safety in help coverage in the league quite possibly – extremely overrated. And what about Ben Roethlisberger coming in at No. 85? If there were a draft held today but NFL GMs, I promise you Roethlisberger would be a top-five pick.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Jay Cutler was born in a town called “Santa Claus?”

Sean Payton’s decision to punt on 4th and inches from his own 30 down 17 to Indy with 13 minutes left Thursday was an early candidate for dumbest move of the year. Will someone please tell these coaches the ultimate goal is to give your team the best chance to win and not to decrease your probability of losing by more.

Raiders starting quarterback Josh McCown caught twice as many passes last season for the Lions as Raiders wide receiver Jerry Porter did. McCown recorded two receptions for 15 yards. Porter totaled one catch for 19 yards. Also, McCown was listed ahead of current Raiders receiver Mike Williams on the Lions depth chart at one point.

Random Prediction: J.T. O’Sullivan and/or Kellen Clemens will have significant fantasy value at some point this season. You heard it here first and you can thank me later.

Bashing the “Sports Guy” has become so cliché, I find myself defending the guy more often than not. But his recent NFL Power Poll in which he places the Seattle Seahawks as the No. 2 team in the NFL is beyond head scratching – that’s right, ahead of both the Chargers and the Colts. Geez, I picked them to finish third in a terrible division.

I cannot believe we are going to be subjected to that awful John Cougar Mellencamp song once again.

Me and the Kritter at the tailgate could result in WWIII

    1) Manning
    2) Tomlinson
    3) Walter Jones (He still wrecks)
    4) Brady
    5) Palmer

As much sense as Bonds becoming a DH makes, I have no idea why the Giants would ever let him go anywhere else. With Cust being as succesful as he has been (and the fact he’s so cheap), it’s probably less likely, but I figured Oakland was a pretty reasonable destination for him. Now I’m worried it will be something like The Angels Angels of Anaheim, which would make me hate them even more.

I was absolutely shocked that the Saints punted on that 4th down play. So what if you only have a 5-10% chance of winning; don’t you owe it to everyone to try? Is it that much worse if the Colts score another touchdown?

    I can’t imagine Roth being a top 5 pick…I like him, and I’m sure GM’s do too…but top 5? I can’t buy it.

What are your predictions about Vince Young vs. the Jags? I hadn’t realized he sucked against them so badly last year. I think I’m going to start top-5 boy Roth instead of Young in the one league I have him in.

    1)Manning
    2)Brady
    3)Palmer
4)Tomlinson – he might be the best RB ever, but he is approaching 30 with a lot of mileage. You can’t be too short-sighted.
    5)Big Ben/Vince Young

Mr Tintle – I respect your opinion, but there’s no way in hell a deteriorating 33-year-old Walter Jones is more important to a football team than Big Ben from this point on.

Keith – Maybe Roethlisberger will continue being injury-prone, and the aftereffects of those concussions shouldn’t be taken lightly, but the fact remains his 8.3 YPA is the best in the history of the NFL. Simply, on a per-play basis, he’s the most productive QB ever. He’s tough, can move effectively in the pocket and is still very young. I’m just curious, who else would even be in the mix there? I mentioned Vince Young, but I can’t really think of many more off the top of my head. I hate to overrate the glamor position, but QB is simply way more important than any other position in football. They touch the ball on literally half the snaps of the game.

I think Young will be solid this week. He’ll get 30-40 rushing yards (I know they stymied his ground game last year) and one TD through the air. But given a decent option with a much better matchup (like my boy Big Ben), I’m totally fine with going that other route. I’d say his ceiling his higher than Young’s this week.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m far from down on Big Ben, I just had a hard time thinking top-5, but I’ll try and make my list to see who else would be there.

In my PPR league, do you think starting Leon Washington instead of LenDale White would be a solid move for this week? The Jax D scares me a little bit. I’m also torn between Mark Clayton and Calvin Johnson in the same league, since I’m not sure how much Calvin will play and how hampered Clayton might be from his injury. I could start one of them as my flex too instead of White or Washington (12 teams, 3 WR, 2RB, 1 flex).

If I didn’t have Roth, I’d probably feel ok with starting Vince, but I’m still worried he doesn’t end up doing much. I’m pretty curious to see how good a team Tennesse is going to be.

Tough calls there. If news comes out tomorrow that T. Jones will be limited, I’d roll with Washington. If not, I’d probably actually start both WRs instead. Not just b/c I’m down on White – I actually think he can be solid running behind an underrated O-line IF he can stay healthy, but it’s a very unfavorable matchup Week 1. I’d probably start Mark Clayton over Johnson, but Johnson over those two backs.

i have chris brown on my keeper league and didnt start him, but my ? is do i trade him now for a high draft choice or something while is value is this high or do i sit on him————need to know before he has a bad game————thanks randy

Randy – Depends on what you can bring back in return, of course, but I think shopping him now is a good idea. His upright running style has led to injury after injury throughout his career, so he’s a fine sell-high candidate. That said, don’t give him away – his cutback ability and speed makes him the best back on that roster, one with an underrated O-line. But if you can get a high draft pick for next year, I’d do it.

PS – Were you ever able to trade Brandon Jacobs? Looks like your bad feeling about him was a bulls-eye.

Yeah, that Mellencamp song is really annoying when u have to hear it all the time on game day.

Question: I like country music, but even I found NBC’s choice of Faith Hill to sing the Sunday Night cover of “I Hate Myself For Loving You” over Pink from last season very interesting, what do u guys think?

Neither seem like great fits. NBC is trying too hard.
