Melancholy

By Dalton Del Don – Senior Writer

I’m depressed. Wednesday wasn’t a very good day for me in the fantasy sports world:

1) As previously mentioned, I own Felix Hernandez in every league I play in. Watching him throw pitch after pitch in the dirt and then signal to the trainer, I’m not optimistic. After such a dominant first two starts, it almost makes this even more difficult to swallow. I hate complaining about injuries, but losing both him and Chris Carpenter might be too much to handle in my NFBC league. I’m expecting the worst.

2) While I didn’t lose Brett Myers to injury, I lost a whole lot of innings from him due to stupidity. Actually, to call this move stupid would be an insult to the stupid. You really don’t need me to go over the numbers – he struck out 107 batters with a 1.17 WHIP over 100 innings after the All-Star break last year and had whiffed 19 guys over 15 1/3 innings to start this season off. The best part is the decision is made the day Myers declares he’s detected a mechanical flaw as the cause for his two recent bad outings. Moving their best pitcher to a role that means about 70 percent fewer innings pitched isn’t a very smart decision.

3) I lost a head-to-head fantasy basketball league 5-4 in the championship round. Did I mention the points scored category came down to me losing by four points? As in, two baskets was the difference between first place and not winning. T-Mac’s DNP didn’t help.

4) Just when I think things can’t get any worse, Sanjaya gets booted off American Idol! Geesh. I did win my other hoops league, and the Warriors are going to the playoffs, so I guess this whole “woe is me” act can stop now.

Woe is you indeed, woe is you. That Myers decision is going to be a job-killer. It just has to be. He was their opening day starter for God’s sake! It’s stuff like that that makes me think I could actually be a manager or GM type in the league. For every good, intelligent person, there’s a Charlie Manuel. On the King Felix note, props to you for owning him in every league…I’ve just got him in my keeper league, but I’d be rooting for him regardless. It doesn’t sound too bad right now…but anything is scary with the elbow. Harden’s shoulder too…man, couldn’t they at least have made it through April?

The Warriors…what can I say? They earned it, and I’m excited they get the Mavs. I think they could maybe beat the Spurs one out of every 10 games, the Suns probably 3 out of 10, but I honestly feel they have a chance against the Mavs. They just match up really well, and I think Nellie is extra-motivated to stick it to Cuban. I haven’t genuinely been fired up for the NBA in quite a while, but these playoffs are finally doing it. The nice bonus is getting to see pictures of Nellie from the last Warriors playoff team…damn!

Hoops championships were a joke this year. I shouldn’t complain, as I did win my one league (not that I can really brag, there wasn’t $$ on it, so not everyone took it that serious), but in the final round there were players on both team’s rosters that had no right being owned at all, let alone playing huge roles. I was ready to kill Duncan after his ejection and “rest” over the last two games. If Rondo didn’t get 6 steals in the last game, I would have lost. Playoff games need to start at least a week earlier.

Heroin or homers…tough call. Food for thought.

Also, I feel bad, but I love watching Angels players fall like flies…especially when I’m facing Vlad in my H2H $$ league!

Charlie Manuel is an idiot. It’s reasons like this that I picked Atlanta to beat out Philly for the wild card spot. I hope that reporter kicks his ass.

Ya 16-5 is a real solid finish for G. State. Avery Johnson – be careful what you wish for! I gotta see how much tickets cost for games 3 and/or 4.

I’m not a fan of head-to-head formats unless it’s fantasy football. You’ve got to go Rotisserie in baseball and basketball. I know it’s less intense week to week, but the best team always wins that way. The amount of injuries in hoops this year was unprecedented.

Harden, Vlad, Kendrick, Escobar and counting all going down so early? Guess we were both right suggesting health as the main factor b/w those two teams.

Now boys, you don’t actually think G State has a chance do you? To be honest, I wanted to face the Clippers but this will do. Nellie is not taking that team past round one. There’s a reason the Mavs are a better team without him.

You’d never hear me say Golden State is better than Dallas, but as far as 1 vs 8 seed matchups go, that’s about as good a chance of an upset as you’re going to get. Nellie is going remind girl-voice who the master is!

I do one H2H and one Roto league for baseball…I always liked the strategy in H2H, but will forever be bitter over my loss last year when I led wire-to-wire but then suffered brutal Hafner, Teahen and Liriano injuries at the end of the year and went out with a whimper.

I still think Vlad is due for a bigger breakdown, and the Halos have the pitching depth to absorb Escobar’s loss…they’re basically opposites really; Angels have pitching depth but need Vlad or their offense is toast, A’s have more offensive depth (mediocrity, really), but need Harden or their pitching is down the tubes…though I’ve been impressed with Kennedy and Gaudin so far.

Warriors tix…yeah, I might have to look into that too.
