Deep Thoughts

Can someone please explain to me why SportsCenter doesn’t show full boxscores?…You know things are getting bad for Daunte Culpepper when Mike Mularkey calls for Ronnie Brown to throw the 2 point conversion pass with the game on the line…The Ravens still suck…When someone starts talking about “Moss,” it’s time to assume they mean Santana…In hindsight, this is what I should have been writing about in college…Thank you Ron Gardenhire. You have a top-5 relief pitcher in all of baseball at your disposal and use him 2/3 innings during a three-game sweep. Good thing Joe Nathan will be well rested this winter. It’s OK to use your best players before the ninth inning and not always with the lead…Barring a Padres comeback, looks like I went 0-for-4 in my postseason predictions. Bravo, Dalton, Bravo. In my defense, I was THIS close to picking the Cards and both bet on and picked the A’s to win the World Series before the season started, so I have some consolation. The Tigers have proved me wrong time and time again this year…Joe Torre sits Gary Sheffield in favor of senile Bernie Baseball in Game 3, followed by benching Jason Giambi for the immortal Melky Cabrera in Game 4 against a righty? As those dudes from Guinness Beer would say: Brilliant!

Will someone please explain to me why so many fantasy magazines had Reuben Droughns as a top 10-15 back? There really needs to be an inquest…Carson Palmer is not fully recovered from his torn knee. Not even close, really…It’s official – I have a man-crush on Laurence Maroney…I see the Broncos dominating on Monday night this week…Has there even been a more anticipated player vs. team/city matchup than T.O. and Philly this week? Sure, the media coverage is tiresome, but I can’t wait to see this train wreck waiting to happen. Really, nothing would surprise me. That said, I say Philly runs away with the game…Kevin Jones, I’d appreciate it if you’d stop proving me wrong each week…Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne have a combined ZERO TDs this year…Can’t believe how much Deuce McAllister is killing Reggie Bush’s fantasy value…Call me crazy, but my favorite bet of the week involves the 49ers and giving 3.5 points…Last week I gave you the Patriots upset, this week I offer you the Steelers. Take the money-line.

I like the SF bet too, but I bought the points down to 3.

Well, with the free-agent acquisition of LeCharles Bentley, the O-Line for Cleveland was looking stellar. Now, with his and numorous other unfortunate injuries to that line, Droughns is not finding room to run. This isn’t a tough concept. Sometimes fantasy football stats go beyond the one player on your team and is drastically affected by things like an offensive line.

Benny – Good point with Cleve’s O-line issues, fantasy mags didn’t have the benefit of knowing about those beforehand…I didn’t like him before those injuries; however, because 1) he isn’t very good and 2) he plays in a real tough defensive division for a team likely to be bad. Oh and he doesn’t catch the ball either. But your right, if Bentley et al stay healthy, he’s likely doing better. Don’t worry, I got plenty wrong myself, as I thought Lamont Jordan was going to have a good year.

Sorry for the Steelers suggestion, but I did give you SF and Philly this week. Now all I need is Denver tonight.

You weren’t alone on Jordan…I almost did a backflip when he fell to me with the 13th pick (14 team league). Little did I know! Thank God I got Gore at the end of the 3rd! Also, I don’t know if anybody pulled themselves away from the TO-fest to watch the Bay Area Bowl (thank God for TiVo and two receivers!), but is it just me, or does Fargas look twice as fast as Lamont? I swear, he made him look like Droughns!

Switching gears to baseball for a second…or longer, since my A’s have me fired up. I have tickets for game #2, and was sure I was going to see Kenny Rogers starting, since he’s absolutely masterful at the Coliseum (and possibly just pitched the game of his career), but just saw this:

“Left-hander Nate Robertson will pitch Game 1 in Oakland on Tuesday night, followed by rookie right-hander Justin Verlander. Left-hander Kenny Rogers and right-hander Jeremy Bonderman will start the third and fourth games, respectively, once the series shifts to Comerica Park on Friday night.”

I’m shocked. Behind Rogers, the pitcher who scares me most is Bonderman, and he’s only going to pitch once in the series? Did Leyland watch the series vs. the Yankees? Robertson is a decent enough pitcher, but come on, Bonderman is your ace. The A’s have reason to be warry of pitching Harden, since he’s kind of an unknown right now, but I’m just shocked. I don’t know if they wanted Rogers to pitch game 7 in the Coliseum or what…I just really don’t get the logic.

    I’ve got tickets for games 6 & 7 too…should be quite a matchup!

Also, the Miami run D did stop the Maroney hype train…I just don’t think New England is going to run wild on teams that don’t have bad run defenses.

    T. Jones and J. Jones ended up with the exact same point totals in my fantasy league…so glad to have agonized over that! (if it makes you feel better, I did start T. Jones, and just loooooved watching Benson get those two scores and garbage carries!)

I didn’t watch the games, but Leinard and Grad-something in TB appeared to play pretty darn well…so did Caddy, which is definitely encouraging. I started A. Bryant instead of R. Moss, and got another stinker (I had Gore, E. Johnson and Bryant on various teams, the 49ers scored 4 TD’s, and I couldn’t get 1 of them!). Bryant’s numbers are all dependent on whether he catches that one long pass or not…he just seems destined to be inconsistent. In the same vein, I think Berrian is going to be inconsistent from here on out…I just don’t think you can count on a long TD every week.

I think Denver is going to run over Baltimore…I just have a feeling Bell is going to have a big night, and McNair is going to show on national TV just how overrated he is.

Keith – I watch every game on Sundays, so ya I caught the Bay Area Bowl…Fargas was one of the most impressive players this week, I thought. Not only did he look much, much faster than Jordan, but he’s also bulked up, and got the hard-fought between the tackle yards as well…An increased time share looks likely there, which is especially bad news for Jordan considering it’s highly unlikely Oak is able to run more than 25 times a game. Still, don’t forget just how injury-prone Fargas is. He def. should be owned in all leagues tho.

Couldn’t agree with you more on Detroit’s rotation set up. Robertson is clearly the weak link in that staff, and pushing him back to Game 4 (so he’ll only go once and allow all others to go twice) seemed like the logical choice to me, especially with all of these off days making it possible….Bonderman is definitely their ace and Rogers is a career 25-4 at the Coliseum…I’m jealous bro, tickets for games 2, 6 and 7!

I guess the A’s asked 10 of their executives if they should go Harden or Loaiza Game 2, and it was basically split down the middle, but ultimately went Loaiza since Harden is more of the unknown at this point. It’ll be very interesting to see if/how they use him Game 4.

Yeah the NE run game was absolutely shut down, although plenty of carries were attempted…Interesting to see Maroney get all of the work in the 4th quarter, I’m curious if Dillon reaggrevated an injury or something, since he was the more effective of the 2 beforehand. Maybe Belichick just trusts the rook more aldready.

Yeah man, couldn’t believe Benson kept getting those goal-line looks, those were his first career scores. The big lead ended up hurting T. Jones this week. Edge James outscored them tho, right?

Those Battle TDs came out of nowhere. Bryant has def. disappointed, but I still think he’s going to be valuable. Like you said w/ Berrian, it is tough counting on big plays each week. At least Grossman stated today that he wants to increase Berrian’s catches underneath, as teams start giving him a bigger cushion on the line of scrimmage.

Gradkowski did look surprisingly competent, and Leinart is already an upgrade over Warner. Never one regarded as anything but slow, Leinart looked positively fleet of foot compared to Warner….In my “experts league” I drafted for RotoWire, I have Caddy Williams, and like you, am very encouraged with that performance – The N.O. run-D had been real solid too. Maybe there’s hope for the TB offense, after all.

Denver is going to roll tonight.

Harden looked good before that last shelling, but you’re right, he’s def. a wild card. Hopefully the simulated games help keep him somewhat fresh, but he might return a strictly fastball/changeup pitcher at this point. Still, he is capable of dominance. I really think the A’s can do it this year, no team left is all that dominant.
