Offseason Ramble

By Jeff Chudnofsky – Staff Writer

Not only does Steve McNair make the Ravens an instant contender for the AFC North, but he elevates Jamal Lewis’ value tremendously.  If you like taking long shots to win the Super Bowl, now is the time to take advantage of the 35/1 odds placed on Baltimore.

If I ever turn to a life of crime, I’ll be sure to cop a Chris Henry jersey.

The San Diego Chargers are making Oakland, Kansas City and Denver fans buy a four game package in order to watch their respective teams in San Diego. If the Chargers are having trouble with opposing fans now, just wait until they move to Los Angeles.

Don’t buy into the hype that Chester Taylor is out of shape. Come September, he will prove to be a second round steal in your fantasy draft.

Eli Manning has reportedly added 10 pounds of muscle this offseason.

Expect to see defensive tackles Brentson Buckner and Dan Wilkinson signed to new teams in the near future. If these guys are still willing to play, they can provide quality depth to any frontline.

Ahman Green is no longer the dominant back of old, but he will be a great value pick in the 4th-5th rounds.

I hate to say it, but there will be a RBBC in Chicago. Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson could prove to be the toughest committee decision in this year’s draft.

Anyone who knows me understands my views on Kerry Collins, but Cincinnati should definitely give him a look.

Watch former sixth overall pick Johnathan Sullivan revive his career in New England.

Speaking of bouncing back, check out the upcoming release of Madden ’07.

Chester Taylor is one of the toughest calls this year. He has top-15 upside, but MeMo could steal carries. He seems to be Childress’ guy though.

What about the Denver RBBC? That could be the most frustrating situation of all the backfields I think.

Unless Denver signs another back before July, I am confident that Tatum Bell will get a bigger split than Ron Dayne. I believe Bell will have a 2/1 carry ratio versus the former Heisman winner. TB will likely get in the 16-20 carries per game while Dayne gets 5-10 on any given week.

Chicago is a muddy situation. TJ proved his worth but the Bears have a high draft pick making a lot of $ on the bench. It’s sad because they are both featured back/fantasy stud material.

MeMo will likely return punts for the Vikings and play on third downs. Taylor will be the main rushing threat and get close to 20-25 touches per game. MeMo is not likely to steal goal line carries. Moore will be a great change of pace back and a must-handcuff for Chester Taylor owners.

If any back is going to rain on Taylor’s parade, it would be Ciatrick Fason, who could be a candidate for goal line carries.

can you tell me what you think of gado, and should i trade gado and h. ward for chestor taylor and michael jenkins————–thanks randy

It is hard to give you a green light without looking at the rest of your team, but I would accept the trade. I thought Gado ran well last year and could be in line for more success with Ahman Green and Najeh nursing injuries. With that being said, I doubt Gado will have the bulk of the carries come September. Chester Taylor is in line for 20 touches per game. I would try to upgrade Michael Jenkins though. Who else does he have at WR? You might be able to get a better WR, a draft pick or upgrade another position. Try to play up Hines Ward to your league mate…the Steelers will throw more often this year.

okay here is my keeper league team, eli manning, andrew walter, gado, kevin jones, cedric benson, hines ward, randy moss, donald driver, a. battle, cedric wilson, maurice stovall—so what do you think of team and trade with this team now———–thanks randy

You are looking good at QB, and at WR. I like Jones and Benson long term, but you need more immediate depth at RB. I would accept the trade and go with ….

    Manning
    Jones
    Taylor
    Benson
    Moss
    Driver

I like that team a lot considering the youth at QB and RB.
Cedric Wilson is not a bad bye week fill-in now that Randel El is gone.
If something happens to Galloway or Clayton, Stovall could put up decent numbers in the WCO. Nice work Randy.
