News & Notes

  • SS Orlando Cabrera has reached base safely in 50 consecutive games, the longest streak in the majors since 2003, when Barry Bonds did so in 58 straight.
  • Speaking of Bonds, his recent three-strikeout game was his first since June 12, 2003. Maybe the old Barry really is never coming back.
  • If Roger Clemens averages six innings for each of the estimated 19 starts he’ll make this summer for the Astros, he’ll earn roughly $35,819 per out. That’s right, per OUT.
  • The Angels made a huge mistake in demoting Jered Weaver. There is no room for seniority or sentimentality in sports. Angel fans will have to hope it’s a short arrangement.
  • Anthony Reyes should be claimed in just about all leagues with his promotion to the Cardinals rotation. Go get him. Although…
  • Home runs are up 16 percent (from 56 homers to 65) over the first 34 games at Busch Stadium, compared with the same number of games played last year at old Busch.
  • 16 of Ryan Howard’s 25 homers have been hit to opposite field.
  • There’s a real chance that Kerry Wood has pitched his final game as a member of the Cubs.
  • Last week I mentioned the humidor and raised the question of what’s stopping the Rockies from using it to their advantage. Ken Macha concurs: “I still feel the humidor should be investigated,” Oakland manager Ken Macha said. “Maybe we ought to do that at our ballpark. The ball’s the same weight, but they are sitting in there and getting moisture, so I don’t understand that.”
  • The humidor’s impact is staggering. Coors Field is averaging 9.4 runs and 1.78 home runs this season. Compare that to the 13.83 and 3.20 compiled from 1995 to 2001. The Oakland A’s were just recently shut out in back-to-back games there, and after Jason Kendall led off the second game with a single, they were no-hit. It marked the seventh shutout at Coors Field this year – tied for most in the majors.
  • The Chicago White Sox pitchers allowed 16 hits Tuesday….and won the game by 14 runs. The White Sox have scored at least eight runs in six straight games, a franchise record
  • Mike Gonzalez and Chris Ray are the only two closers yet to blow a save this year.
  • Going to see Radiohead in concert this weekend, consider me pumped.

That’s a funny Jeremy Piven article….I can’t belive that sent down Jered, his brother aint gettin it done….the humidor thing is underrated, it’s obviously having a huge effect on the numbers.

Oh man oh man… you have no idea what you’re in for–I just saw Radiohead at Bonnaroo and I remain speechless. Consider yourself lucky to land a ticket to one of those theatre shows.

In the meantime, Reyes’s no-no just got broken up by Thome in the 7th… I’m just not sure if this kid is ready for the Show.

Wood is definitely done. If I But what’s the deal with Prior? Is he going to get his velocity back? Can he win 8 games out of the next 19-20 starts, as a Cub?

Re: Humidor- i have no problem with the humidor. Dome stadiums control the atmosphere in the dome, and all franchises design their own parks, and they can even move cities if their terribly unhappy with the trajectory of ball flight in their area. Here’s an interesting catch though. Since the beginning of the franchise the Rockies consistenly put up well above average-attendance numbers. Humidor was introduced before 2003 season, and since then attendance has plummeted. Last year rockies ranked well into the bottom 10 in the majors, filling less than 50 percent capacity. i doubt any other team would pick up this idea, unless they want to start bouncing checks.

Chad – Prior’s main problem was location in his first start back. Plus the wind was blowing out like crazy, so all of those homers can partially be explained for. As for his health, it’s really anybody’s guess. He’s had rumors of a damaged arm for three years now, and no one knows for sure how bad that damage actually is. I would think his velocity will creep back up this year, but he has to stay healthy to do so. If he can, and with D. Lee back, he can win games at the rate you stated. Still, if you can get 15 starts out of him from here on out consider yourself lucky.

Interesting point made about Coors Field’s attendance. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a direct correlation to the fewer runs being scored, so ya, it would probably be smart for other teams to not duplicate the usage. It’s just interesting that the Rockies already had a pretty big homefield advantage being in the mile high air (although it appeared to be a pretty big road disadvantage) but now with them and only them using these balls, it might be an even greater homefield help.

Randy – Long term I like Billingsley the most. Then Anthony Reyes. And then Sowers.

Eddie – Good to hear! Did they play a lot of new stuff? Yeah, I’m definitely excited for it. Especially it being a small venue, like you said. Let’s just say it wasn’t cheap, though.

Yep, Reyes certainly looks ready to stay up here for good now. Hopefully you were able to nab him.

Weren’t the changes to Busch supposed to make it more of a pitcher’s park? What’s the story there?

They probably played 8 new songs, and I enjoyed most of them – “Bodysnatchers” was very cool, and I haven’t heard “Bangers ‘n Mash” but apparently it’s along the lines of “There There” with lots of snare-banging by all the members, so look out for that one. You’re not going to regret the ticket price, I reckon; Thom was in really good spirits, too.

As for Reyes, being in a strictly St. Louis fantasy league basically ended my chances of getting him… any hint of a start and he’s gone, and now he’s probably gone for good. Being a Cards fan at this point in the season, though, as long as he is in the majors it’s a big win.

Robby – I think for the most part it’s tough to predict how a park will play because there are so many unpredictable factors. I seriously heard from some writers that Petco was going to favor hitters while it was under construction, but obviously Busch is still new and numbers could change. Pujols himself may skew it a significant amount.

Eddie – All right really good to hear. I go tonight, so I’ll look out for those new ones. I don’t think I’ll regret the ticket price either, I’m def. pumped.
